Not One Damn Dime Day (January 20th protest)
This got forwarded to me thru a Yahoo group I'm in. I like it--a protest movement that both makes a socially consciencious statement and saves me time, money, and the effort of getting off my keister to go to the store. Apparently on Thursday the 20th all I gotta do to protest the war is sit on my ass.

Yeh, baby, the 60's are f-in' back!!

Not One Damn Dime Day - Jan 20, 2005

Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq,
since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it,
Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime
Day" in America.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our
name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms
of consumer spending.

During "Not One Damn Dime Day" please don't spend money. No one damn
dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse
purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KMart and Target.
Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't
buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter).

For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down.
The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is
immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that
it is their responsibility to stop it.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the
people of the United States of America, not for the international
corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent the corporations and
funnel cash into American politics.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians
put the troops in harm's way. Now 1,200 brave young Americans and (some
estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a
plan - a way to come home.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing
agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by
doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.

For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our
religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to
end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world:
indeed it's the only thing that ever has!"
--Margaret Mead

2. I'm on board with this. Ubetcha.
We're a sorry bunch of sheep if we can't do this for 24 hours ... less than 0.3% of a year. Not a dime. Not even a penny.

3. Another suggestion made a while ago..
is for everyone to wear black. What a statement it would make to see thousands of people all over the world dressed in black to protest.

4. Will this even be noticed?
I'm in also, but remember these thoughts when we weren't supposed to buy gas on such and such a day, blah blah blah. Will this have any kind of impact?
And yes, I know, if MILLIONS do this, it will, but is this reaching millions?
On a more positive note, I did receive this from a sis in CA today who is not a member of DU, so perhaps it's going far and wide?

5. this can be done if people are sincere and disciplined about their
convictions.

If people aren't sincere and disciplined about their convictions, then they will have a ton of excuses as to why they should be free to suck the big dicque of corporate consumerism and fear.

This would be easy for me... I've made it a career of not spending a dime for 24 hours. ;) Can you hear FDR in my pocket screaming? That's me pinching the shit out of him.

6. One Damn Dime Day won't make a bit of difference
because most people will just wait until the day after to purchase their items. If you want to make a real and long-term commitment, Buy Blue. Stop shopping at Target, drive a few extra miles to get gas at Hess (Arco if that's not an option), don't get your computers from Dell. Put your money where your mouth is every day, not just one day.

7. Total crap. What's the point?
Do I buy a box a cereal the day before or after? I still spent the money, right?

This dumb email was discussed here a week or so ago. I also seem to remember an equally bogus idea about not buying gas on some particular day to "stick it to the man". That one may even have a snopes.com debunking, and this incarnation sounds about the same.
