12. It wasn't meant to be an insult. It was in the "spirit" of the thread.
My apologies.

By the way, I, along with about a half a billion other people in the West, (upper case, for your benefit) ARE NOT ABOUT TO STOP "whining" ANYTIME SOON WHEN IT COMES TO THE IGNORANT, OBNOXIOUS PRICK YOU ELECTED TO RUN YOUR AFFAIRS (and by some dated, soon-to-be redundant design, everybody else's affairs as well).

When HE goes away - by whatever means necessary - my job is done. I'll go away and cease giving a shit.

9. I'll take the elephant before
I'd take the US Troop for assistance.

It was the elephants who sensed the danger and some people who managed to hitch a ride on them, when they headed for the hills, where able to escape injury.

2. I agree 100%. I'm not American. These aren't "my boys"...
And I know a cheap photo op when I see one. So does India. So does the rest of the world...

I feel very, very bad for Clinton though...for some mysterious reason, he bought into the desperate shite of GWB. HE COULD HAVE DONE EXACTLY THE SAME WORK AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND WORKED FUCKING WONDERS FOR THE IMAGE OF THE US ABROAD.

He's now a mere shill for GWB. How very fucking sad...

5. I suspect if Bush didn't send the troops over, he would be blasted by
many for not sending troops over. Unfortunately, it is the most effective logistical move, uniforms or not. And yeah, sending Jeb over there makes me puke. And maybe you dont like the over familiar "our boys" but guess what? If you're a U.S. citizen they are your boys, pal, like it or not. Your paying them.

17. Good post, Carl Brennan, but let's also remember
the Berlin Airlift.
I see your point, and provocative perspectives like yours are what keep sanity in our country. I agree with you partially, insofar as it's wise to prevent confusing the military with Humanitarianism. I think we do need to remind ourselves that the essential purpose of the military is to kill and to destroy - even if it's "necessary" (as some, such as I, believe it SOMETIMES is necessary) to kill for defense or for the sake of a greater good.
But I think you have written this post like a true patriot, to keep our minds clear about the nature of the military - its main job is to kill and to destroy - and many good military men know this all too well. Posts like yours keep our minds sharp and clear, and maintain whatever sanity our Republic has.
However, that said, I would rather see our military helping people than harming them. And as a simple practical matter, I think what matters most is to help the victims of this disaster by any means, and the military has some of those means. In fact I'd rather see them do more of this.
And I think, at least, the individual military men who work in this relief effort, deserve respect for any work they do.

23. A lot of your post makes no sense....
Many of the soldiers involved in the relief effort probably have not been to Iraq.

"White saviors?" Jeez, when I see the casualty reports from Iraq I see a lot of Hispanic surnames. When I see pictures, I see a lot of African-American soldiers. So, I don't understand why you are playing the race card.

And, then to your underlying premise. Can't you ever be proud of anything our military does?
