Hey NightOwls... Dig Novak Eating His Words (CNN)
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 03:18 AM by VolcanoJen
The repeat of "Capital Gang" is on now (4:00 am et).

Per my Tivo:

Transcription by VolcanoJen, emphasis by VolcanoJen

Mark Shields: Bob Novak, this isn't a fine-tuning, this is a 180 change in policy. This is an administration that bandied the word "irrelevent" about every time the word "United Nations" was mentioned. Now, it's hat-in-hand.

Novak: This is the policy that Secretary of State Powell and Deputy Secretary Armitage wanted from the the first. The Pentagon didn't want to bring in the UN. It was a mistake. The testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by the Pentagon people showed they weren't ready for this, they thought it was going to be a cakewalk. So they made a mistake! The question is now, of course it has become a political issue. The Democrats think they can make a lot of political hay out of this mistake. But, uh, it was a mistake, and now I think it's been corrected.

Good stuff on CNN... ;-) Anyone have any nice shoes for Novak to ingest???

On Edit: "Cakewalk" is my new favorite word...

2. The non-civilian military leaders have had their ranks thinned.
Non-believers retired...

...all voluntarily, of course. Witness Gen. Shinseki.

One God, one voice, one country.

3. Who's gonna take the fall? Rummy? Condi? Wolfie?
Certainly not Powell... in fact, Powell is looking justified (by Repub standards only, of course) right about now...

8. Is it time for more pruning of the professional military leadership?
Naysayers are negative; they need to go.

They're to blame.

4. What little credibility Novak ever had...
... went out the window when he did Rove's bidding and outed Wilson's wife to divert attention from the White House's role in phonying up evidence.

I suspect this is the same thing -- "... and now I think it's been corrected."

Yeah, right, Bob.

5.  Anyone remember the early pre-war days, when Novak..
.. was against the action in Iraq? I do.

He flips more times than a fuckin' pancake at the Waffle House,

6. Sure I do
I just wish CNN would turn him loose and let him talk in depth about his views on school lunches, no minimum wage, more tax cuts for his rich ass and so forth. Guess they know better.

10. Never forget that Novak used the

results of a heavily freeped CNN poll to argue that "the American people" wanted the election to be resolved right away. That was completely unethical. A man in his position should have known that there was no scientific validity to an online poll, even if he didn't know about freeping.

Unethical "journalist" uses poll skewed by unethical right-wingers -- not surprising but still disgusting.

Speaking of surprises, anyone remember when one of Novak's eyebrows came unstuck and dangled over his face during a roundtable discussion? Then, after the break, the eyebrow was back where it should be! Wonder if both eyebrows are falsies? We could write in to Crossfire and ask.

12. Republicans must be forgiven "mistakes."
No matter how many people die because of them.

Except there was no mistake. They did exactly what they intended to do. They were dead wrong and refused to listen to anyone who told them they were dead wrong.

This was hubris. A whole other category of "mistake."

16. "Corrected"? Not hardly, Novakula
Surely a person who wears false eyebrows is, to put it mildly, credibility-challenged from the get-go, but this is taking things a little too far even for such a specimen.

Need we point out that what is under discussion is the *administration's proposal to the UN, a proposal moreover that looks as one-sided and beligerently unapologetic as everything else these nimrods do? And that even if the other nations grin and lap at Bush's hand in gratitude for the opportunity to spend billions pulling our asses out of the fire--a highly dubious prospect--the best-case scenario is that we will still be tens of thousands of troops short of what is needed in spring 2004? This attempt at a turn-around is still a hell of a long way from "mistake corrected."

And this incredibly lame bit of spin is still a hell of a long way from "damage controlled."

17. Novak and some other traditional Conservatives such as Pat Buchanan
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 01:39 AM by snyttri
and James Pinkerton of Fox News and Newsday were against the war from the start. Conservatives used to be isolationist. The neo-cons are interventionists.
