So between shows i flip through the cable "News" channels and.... |
|
i landed at "Scarborough country" no passport required but bring your own dead intern. Anyhow, Joe had 2 guests on, one a Rabbi and a non-believer, the discussion topic? Tsunami-punishment from God?
I'm not kidding. I have stayed away from cable shows for over a year now but i was shocked at this topic, i lasted 5 minsutes before i thought my head was going to explode.

1. Email Joe; ask if his dead female intern was punishment from God... |
|
Of course, you'll get no answer...

7. NPR did the same thing, and all the fundie freaks came out of the |
|
woods today.
Here is what I learned, and I will try to offend everyone equally in what I repeat.
From the Imam: the tsunami can either be punishment or martyrdom. It's martyrdom for kids because they are innocent and will be rewarded, as will be the folks for whom this was meant as martyrdom. The way you can tell is the way they died. If the roof falls in on top of them, that is a sign of martyrdom, and not punishment.
From the rabbi: (Hassidic?) God controls everything. Nothing happens on the earth except for it's purpose for people of the Jewish faith. This is a sign of the relevations (I don't know they Torah, but the man actually said this), the signs started coming in 1991 with the gulf war, he was saying alot of yiddish words, so I may get some of it mixed up. But God causes every single thing that happens and causes it only for the Jews, what happens to other people is collateral damage. Even if a man cuts his finger just a little bit, God caused that to happen.
From the former LDS minister: This is a test for people. It isn't good or bad, but it is a test for people to see if they can get through and test their faith, blah, blah, blah.
It was freakish, in all freaky flavors of the fundie rainbow.
One atheist called in and said "we are on our own".

5. Did you see Robertson? |
|
That old griftin' motherfucker was on giving his thoughts. After trading biblical quotes about Armageddon Joe signed off with "...and like a thief in the night, Pat Robertson. Thank you...". Truer words were never spoken.

but, it was a good insight into the way those people think. How anyone can believe and follow that Robertson prick I'll never understand. I didn't hear him mention Operation Blessing helping out the tsunami victims. OP Blessing is probably to busy hauling diamonds out of Africa to bother with them folks in Indonesia.

8. People always seem to forget that this earth has been around |
|
for millions of years. For all we know the flood that Noah's Ark floated on was a tsunami.
These types of incidences have been happening through the earth's history. Even if an event occurred like this Tsunami happened a few hundred years ago we probably would not even know about it.
With the advent of the powerful media outlets that we now have the world can witness catastrophes that they would have never known about in years gone by. Now that we can actually see these things there are all sorts of cries about God's wrath and the end of the world.
This Tsunami has gotten me thinking about the Lost City of Atlantis though. Maybe that is what happened to it.

14. For My Current 'Rice Bowl' I Deal With Modeling Of Extreme Hydrologic |
|

events. One of the return periods we use is a 500 yr. event (a 1/500 chance of the event occurring in any given year).
Looking at the frequency of Tsunami in the Pacific region, I have a feeling these events are more frequent than people think. As you say, we really do not have adequate lengths of record to adequately assess the risk posed by these extreme events.
Let's say that the last big tsunami happened back in great great granddad's day, or 100 years ago, the history of which was passed on from generation to generation.
On first impression, one may think that tsunami is so infrequent that it is not really a concern. Let's face it, there is only a story of one in great great's day.
Now, if you were to explain to the individual that actually you may have a 1/100 chance any given year of being wiped out like Banda Aceh, they would probably take a different view of the risk posed by tsunami.

9. Absolutely outrageous. |

I didn't see it but this description is enough. Their indecency knows no limits. This is the lowest form of human behavior imaginable. Gloating over an immense human tragedy.
Oh how they cried! when people were dancing in the streets after 9-11.
Now look at them. Every bit as loathesome and vile.

10. Meanwhile, On The First Hour Of NPR's Talk Of The Nation Today |
|
"Many victims of the tsunami have questions: Is this God's will? Why do disasters happen to good people? Often, they're left with few answers, only their faith. We'll discuss how Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and Christians reconcile religion and disaster."
Basically, an hour of Christian, Hindu, Muslim, etc. views on why 'God' killed hundred's of thousands.
So, what is wackier, someone who thinks the earth is a living entity, or someone expounding on why 'God' decided to knock off a bunch of his followers? Will the New York Times be doing a story on this wacky theory?
No, I don't believe any of this stuff. Just commenting on the hypocrisy of modern media.
