CNN Cancelling Capital Gang Later This Year

I was going to report this later today, but Howard Kurtz beat me to it: CNN "plans to end 'Capital Gang,' the long-running Saturday night panel show created by Novak, later this year."

2. Does anyone else get the impression...
That something of a right-wing purge is taking place at CNN, under Klein? That perhaps, just perhaps, they are getting ready to reassign resources to more real reportage, as opposed to feeding blast fax talking points to the masses?

A good while back, someone predicted that the MSM would slowly adopt a more oppositional tone if Chimpy was re-selected. It could be coming true.

19. If the media does begin to take a more critical view of Bush...
...then that will be the biggest admission ever that they have failed in their responsibility to report the news objectively and with integrity.

i sincerely hope this is what's going to happen, and if it does, i will be a fervent CNN watcher.

First Crossfire, now Capital Gang. This is a good sign. Now get rid of Candy Crowly and it will be another improvement.
Is CNN going to finally put some intelligent political shows on the air??

She's not as bad as Candy, but CNN is apparently not interested in renewing her contract (or she is not interested in renewing with CNN). I'd give a link, but I don't recall where I read it--although it was a reputable source.

27. Bob is probably pulling the plug on his shows
Sounds like hes getting ready for retirement. Al Hunt (and wife Judy) and Shields are his friends, and his show formats got really tired the last few years. At one time they were very influential, but lately theyve become a roost for old codgers resting on old laurels. Its pretty obvious to everyone that it was waaaay past time to go.

One less tossing of "pies filled with shit" so-called "discussion" shows. The more of this kind of garbage that gets canceled the better.

As for those who will miss it, shove your face in a toilet once or twice a day. That should fulfill your need for watching such crap.

My husband watches it sometimes (I go elsewhere). He's a brilliant man, but a little too impressed with some BS like "The Prince of Darkness" aka Novak.

It's all soooooo transparently transparent. It would be boring if it weren't so damaging.

My mother is a diehard Democrat and never misses a show. She hates Novak and BuckTooth O'Byrne, and says she loves to watch Mark Shields and Al Hunt stick it to the two of them.....and if you watch it, it seems like Shields is running the show, not Novak.

And if you thought these shows did anything remotely postive for liberals, you are kidding yourself.

It is not childish to point out that you discredit your legitimate concerns when you critisize them for something they havent actually done yet.

You will notice if you reread that I didnt defend anything CNN has done in the past, I just pointed out what any mature thinker should know.

Keeping an open mind is important, that you chose not to is your problem, not mine.

pattern of CNN and MSNBC. Just like I don't need to give bush and the republicans the benefit of the doubt to see if they will ever do the right thing. In my view, there's no difference between bush and CNN. They both LIE to the American people on a daily and persistent basis. Do you deny that they do? Why did the Pentagon use CNN for its psych-ops! Because they knew that CNN would repeat anything the bushies asked them to.

So why in the world would you attack me for believing that CNN will continue its persistent pattern of being a mouthpiece for the bushies? That boggles my mind.

34. So you think it is smart to assume that all patterns continue forever?
I didnt say that they would be replaced with liberal commentators, nor have implied that. Did you even read my posts?

All CNN has announced is that these two shows wont be continued. Klein has also said that he doesnt like the partisan argument form and prefers substance that is still engaging.

I dont know what he will replace them with or what the new style of thier programming will be. That is why I, unlike you, chose not to jump to conclusions.

Your only basis for concluding that they will replace these shows with right wing propaganda is your assumption that they will alays follow the same trends. There is a reason we call them trends. They arent permanent.

tool of the bushistas, I will be the first to congratulate them. Until then, I will continue to view them as wingnut scum, and not expect to be attacked on DU for saying so. They are the ones who need to prove themselves. Not me.

What amazes me is how you and the others on this thread are reading it as a positive move for CNN to get rid of it's only fair and balanced programming. And that you all assume that CNN has good intentions. CNN and good intentions is an oxymoron these days.

Your little reasoning about trends is pathetic at best. Trends are predictors of near future behaviour. As I said, I would be elated if CNN would finally behave as a news organization as opposed to the propaganda machine they have been for the past five years. But until they do, there is no reason for you or anyone else to attack me. Because any criticism and doubt that they incurr is based upon their actions. Not mine.

If you want to know what CNN is up to now, check out General Discussion and General Discusson Politics. There are several threads about their partisan reporting this week. YOU hold your breath waiting for those whores to change.

39. Why is it so important for you to assume the future?
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 02:45 PM by K-W
Why cant you just live with that fact that is is a possibility that CNN could take a step in the right direction?

And then you decide to throw a few strawmen out there.

Nobody is saying that CNN is good, you are misreading. Cancelling these aweful shows is in itself a good thing. It is whether you like it or not.

May this be a part of a broader plan that isnt even remotely good, yes. That doesnt change the fact that 2 bad shows are being cancelled.

The fact that you continue to insult me is a pretty clear indicator that you are incapable of having an intelligent discussion. I welcome you to prove me wrong, but next time try reading and understanding my posts before you reply to me as if I was defending CNN.

These two shows deserved to be cancelled.
We dont know what CNN will do now.

That is all I have said, and that is 100% correct. I cant really understand why you insist on insulting me because I refuse to foolishly try and assume the future.

42. CapGang & Crossfire had the only reliably strong progressives
on CNN that I could see.

They castrated Crossfire when Begala and Carville were making fools of Tucker and Novak on a daily basis. Sent them to commute-time and cut the show in half.

Capitol Gang may have the rabid Kato Burn and the traitor Novak, but they at least had strong Democratic, though centrist, opinion aired. Al Hunt is a centrist but he doesn't back down, which counts as an attack on what is now an extremist right-wing. Margaret Carlson is left when she doesn't have Clintons to hate, and while Mark Shields tends to piss on Democrats in his attacks on Republicans - that's how he gets his 'credibility' - at least he eventually states the Democratic case after relieving his kidneys on them.

With Crossfire neutered into oblivion, and CapGang just cancelled outright, it's obvious that CNN is pushing further right. They want editorial control of everything that comes out of the network, and since they never seriously question the right wing's insanities or dishonesties, and congenitally dismiss progressive values, I think it's easy to see where this is going.

CapGang is just about the only CNN I watch any more. We'll see if they replace it with anything more than their comprehensive right-wing bias. I won't hold my breath.
