KOEB Meeting
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 08:09 PM by Patsy Stone
Ladies: Let's call this meeting to order!

:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

Per Mods suggestion of "more appropriate Forum." Too many floaty hearts in the Election Results Forum. Entering a "no-fun zone."

Only drama, no love allowed...

We can hear the comment again about the capital being pillaged by the Visigoths.

4. Checking in!
DU is REALLY slow tonight, traffic must still be extra high. So pardon me if I seem unresponsive to comments tonight, eh?

I think something is going to have to be done to enhance capacity, since work on fixing this country up is obviously going to involve heavy usage of this board! And of course, ever more ladies and brave men are going to discover the KOEB thread, too!

38. Actually, it's closer to 2,000
I was accidentally deleted under an old user name when they did some purging after the election and Skinner offered to give me my old name back or continue to use this one. I figured that after the election, I'd come back with a "clean slate," so to speak.

Maybe I'll hit another 1,000 on this most historic day!

I'm still trying to catch up on all the news. No TV at work and then I took my kid shopping so he could use his Christmas gift cards.

But some very scary things are going on with melting at the poles - is this what he was talking about? Icebergs breaking off? There was something in the news earlier about icebergs being seen farther from the poles and more plentiful than normal, I think. VERY bad sign if I heard right.

163. Yes
She's sent some great penguin photos and great picture of the light shows in the sky. It's weird to be in the dark for six months also. Currently, it's Summer, but she's spent several years going back and forth. Apparently it's more like a commune then anything else.

201. Sounds great. I know someone who did something similar
Also in Antarctic with Penguin photos. But she is fabulous artist and did from-life illustrations for the scientists as well as her own drawings and paintings. She brought them to art class to show us, and you could see how much she loved being there. I know she went back this year. Hard to imagine a world so alien exerting such a pull, but it obviously does. She loved the "commune" feel too, the way everybody was together and worked as teams, formal and informal.

She did something similar going down down the Amazon River and in other exotic places. But she finds wonderful things to paint and draw just anywhere. You would like her. And her work is so effortless and so alive.

209. Wait a minute.
See they all do congregate there. My friend (actually my closest friend -- more like a sister) is also an amzing effortless artist. She's taken to doing scrimshaw while she's down there. She travels the world with her husband (who she met down there, even though he lived in the next town over in WA) on, like $5 a day on her way back from the ice.

I'll bet they know each other, was she in McMurdo too?

222. Amazing how it can seem smaller when you are farthest from home
Edited on Thu Jan-06-05 10:14 PM by Nothing Without Hope
Pleased to meet you, Tina. Mine's Cat. Lucia was the teacher of one of the best art classes I ever took, which was either summer before last or the one before that (I'm hazy at the moment). The venue was gorgeous, the DeCordova Art Museum in Lincoln, Mass. Wonderful experience. I doubt Lucia would remember me by name -- just another of her students -- but I bet she'd remember my face. She taught something called "Drawing From Nature," and it was truly inspiring and also very helpful technically. She is such a natural, strong, gently-tough person with such grace. Always good to meet someone like that. Like Albert Schweitzer said,
In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Not too strong to describe Lucia, but she would no doubt be surprised to know she affects people that way. I wish she would write some kind of biography, with illustrations of what she's done.

She has illustrated childrens' books too.

229. My friend's name is Tina
Lucia sounds like a wonderful person. It's very special when you meet a person who inspires you to be creative. I love Schweitzer's quote. One of my deepest hopes is that everyone find that type of spark. It would make the world saner and a much better place.

242. Yes, people like that often don't realize what they give
That's part of the beauty of it. They just leave an artless trail of seeds planted, spirits lifted, hope rekindled. From what I've heard, the Dalai Lama is like that, except that he knows what he is doing. It's one reason why he travels so much.

Inspiration by other people is one of the sources of energy and hope that I try to tap into. Yes, there are awful things but there are wonderful things as well. Sometimes the surprise is so sweet it can lift your spirits amazingly.

In this line I would recommend a nonfiction book, "Gaviotas: A village to reinivent the world." Amazon has it. It's a true story about something that has been going on for over 20 years and is still going on now in the face of challenges we can't even imagine. It's a story of creative imagination solving apparently impossible third-world living problems. But it is ESPECIALLY a story about what happens to the people and their children and their neighbors in the village where all this brainstorming and building takes place. There are some reviews at Amazon, but they don't mention any of my favorite scenes. Sometimes when it's hard not to give up, one of the things I do is remember precious things, and some of them are scenes in this book. Human nature is NOT irreversibly "bad." There IS real reason to believe that a better way of living is possible. They have been doing it for over 20 years now. One of their solar hot water heaters was installed in the White House in Jimmy Carter's admin, then (of course) removed during Ronald Reagan's. They're the real thing. But like I said, the most moving part isn't the miraculous engineering, it's what happens with the way the people think and feel.

OK, the incredibly slow response time of this computer system tonight have finally done it for me. I'm going to start looking into getting rid of this ancient dial-up modem and upgrading. I have better things to do than wait for this thing to creep when it isn't crashing.

Hope you get this, even though I'm blathering now. Been a long, eventful day, eh?

Good night.

BTW, I love all things Eygptian. My son's name is Ramzey (derivitive of Ramses I and means "king" in Arabic) and I have great big Eye of Ra/God of Horus door beads in my den. Had to stop myself from going overboard and buying some Ankh earrings tonight.
Just thought you may want to know that about me. LOL

160. Not just "meanies," BLIVETS. Will Pitt taught me that one today
He called one of the odious Repug reps a blivet on his live-blog of the hearings (great, by the way, at Truthout) and I asked him what it meant, as it looked to be a useful word and all.

He sent me HERE with a smiley face:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=blivet

I won't spoil it for you by printing it out -- but I'll give the hint that it's a military term.

I think we should adopt this word "blivet" big-time. It's really perfect for some of those smug stupid mean blowhards.

The connection is soooooo slow tonight I'm only getting this long after you wrote it. I hope you see my question, because I'd like to know.

I imagine the mean ones were the blivets.

The name-caller was either Keith or Craig?

In connection with election fraud/suppression investigation? Mean to DeLay? What?

Thanks in advance if you answer any or all of my questions! I tried to sort of make them multiple choice to make it faster for you!

105. my notes
KO: 1877 was last time EC vote was stopped.

Good vid. of S T-J and Boxer. Ya Boxer! Video of Conyers talking about stuff. Then DeLay and Drier. :puke: And Obama. saying that W won Ohio. Then Oxley, Voinovich. :puke: Lewis from GA.

Dammn, that was like greatest hits from today!

KO: R's "treated it as if capital had been pillaged by Visigoths" LOL

Commementator Crawford: D's making trouble, hurling words. They had this fight right out of the box.

Bennett's "really mean" statement. :puke:

KO: Why did both sides treat this like political dynamite? Crawford: This was an opportunity for a bipartisan look at these problems. Boxer made a good point today.

KO: Are we gonna get that? Will this put any fire under voting reform? Crawford: partisan spit fest all the way, D's don't have any power. We have one party rule in Washington. D's left with these sort of protest moments. This is the problem with one party rule. We have an electoral sytsem that doesn't work, we spend more money on prison food than on elections in this country.

154. Thank you for the summary; today would not have happened...
....if it had been left to 'others.' Congratulations to all of you for all you've done (and the fun you provide) for making today happen.

It may be 'one party rule' in DC; but its 'We The People...' everywhere else and I'd suggest a bunch of folk 'inside the beltway' not sign four year leases. They're acting like Jan 1973; as our efforts with Congressman Conyers and others continue, its gonna start feeling like the 'summer of 73' (i remember it like it was yesterday)

And for all those lamenting the MSM lack of coverage during the past two months, let me close with this little quote:

"...on the night of 17 June 1972, five burglars were arrested in the Democratic National Committee offices. Newspaper reports from that point began revealing bits and pieces of details that linked the Watergate burglars with President Richard Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign. The president and his chief assistants denied involvement,...."

Conyers "status report" already contains more that a few 'bits and pieces' and he's got all of us on his side, as well.

So, here's one to all of you :toast:

We will in_DEED prevail!

228. This is great, Crispini, thanks. Some progress has been made.
Frustrating to not have more, but at least now we have people on the TV actually saying things like "one-party rule" and "the electoral system doesn't work" and the Blivets openly opposing fair and free elections in their own repulsive way. The election fraud/suppression issue isn't as nearly invisible as it was. Let's hope the lights get turned up on high-beam on this cesspool. They've been hiding out of sight like a bunch of fat cockroaches for far too long.

And I am most impressed with the pillaging Visigoths line. Not only colorful (history major or minor?) but also shows his own disgust with their behavior. Quite revealing, that sarcasm.

All in all, I think a reward of FH's has been earned all around:

<snip>
We have an article on Arnold and there have been various internet articles. From my research I believe he isn't taller than 6ft 1, but isn't shorter than 6ft. Of course, Arnold had this to say a few years back when asked how tall he was, "I'm 6'2". I've heard rumors that I'm really much shorter in real life - like 5'6" or something like that - which is ridiculous. I can assure you this is not the case. People look up to me, and not just because I do a lot of work in the community. I mean, most people really LOOK UP to me."

One guy says " Arnold on 59th street and Madison Ave heading into the Revlon building about 5 years ago. He is shorter than me and that was a big surprise. I'm 6'2 and he appeared to be about 5'11."

A democratic strategist revealed to Guardian "He wears risers in his boots. He's a 5ft 10in citizen of Austria who believes his real place in history is to be president of the United States."

Tom, a reader recently sent me this snippet: "I was standing within two feet of Arnold at a film promo in Manhattan in 1995. I am 5'10" and Arnold was about 1.5" taller than me. I'd give him 5'11.5 even"

Gropinator was giving state of the union speech to CA and talked about redistricting reform (which I liked) and other reforms -- freaked out his legislators apparently.

I missed the mandate slam!

I ignored MJ. He was icky. :puke:

Then there was Andrea Yates mistrial because witnesss lie, and show closed with a humorous piece on warning labels, which was quite fun.

Sorry... if I don't get it down as it's being said, I don't get it! that's all I remember! Hope that helps! :hi:

232. Wonderful! Is it collage or straight painting or what?
Beautiful whatever it is, but I paint too (watercolorist) and am curious.

LOVE the style, and the bunny feels right at home there.

Sorry this is coming so late, but though I joined this thread on time, the connection was so horribly slow tonight I am only now getting toward the end. This is it. I'm going to start the process to get rid of dial-up internet; I can't take this any more.

Good for you, caring for those wild bunnies. Here in Massachusetts there's a team that cares for injured or otherwise needy raptors -- hawks, eagles, owls and such -- and they raise money for their work by taking some of their patients --healed birds that can't fly or hunt because of their past and used to people -- around to schools and other venues. I had the privilege of seeing one of these and was awed. This is a very good, wise thing to do. You could see the man's non-mushy love for these beautiful birds, as you can see yours for the animal in your painting and the one in the photo.

You may never see this because it is coming so late and the "Recent Posts" facility has been turned off because of high site traffic. Too bad.

238. I saw it, sometimes I periodically check my posts and see replies.
Thanks for your kind words about my work. It is a mixed media piece, colored pencil drawing, collage, thread, encaustic paint, and poured beeswax.

You should check out the artists group thread in DU Groups. There are some artists starting to gather there slowly but surely. I think you'd like it. I posted there a few weeks ago, trying to relax between politics and peak oil discussions. I think it'll start filling up over there soon. People are going to turn to art and music to get them through some of the nonsense the Republicans will be throwing our way.

I'm not the one who cares for the wild bunnies by the way, that's the other rabbit lady in the KO Estrogen Brigade. Aren't those bunnies the living end, so cute.

Come back and post floatie hearts for KO manana.

235. Okay, now that is just too adorable
I can't let my kids see that!

It's cool that you rehab wild bunnies. Is that your job or do you volunteer all that time to raise them? (Sorry if this has been asked, I haven't read the entire thread, yet.)

244. I am retired so do it full time out of the house
I am affiliated with two wildlife centers which deliver them to me. I do other animals but mostly buns. This after several years volunteering.

I've helped where I can with rescue work for dogs, so I have an inkling of the time and effort you put into this. :toast:

246. Thank you
My payment is watching them hop off, scurry or fly off depending on the species. Nothing like it.

234. Hiding out here, are we?
Let me guess... This was inappropriate where it was, but all the cr@p floating there now is just fine, right? :eyes:

I missed the show tonight, but will catch the repeat later. The kids had a lot of homework they needed help with today. THEN, they expected me to feed them, too! Sheesh. Kids these days. What nerve!

;)

237. You are clearly having a Miss Cleo moment.
The long story:

The threads marked "Official" were never locked, however two other harmless floaty heart threads got a little wacky really late at night, when the second shift came on duty and were. Who knew?

The last note from the Mod suggested this was more Lounge material.
Also, we were heckled one night for not talking about NEWS by someone who stopped in to look around. There wasn't any news that night, so the giggling commenced, floaty hearts abounded, and a complainer complained. Booo.

So, since that night it seemed better to take it outside. Last night should have been the first night in exile, but KO was KO'd with a sickness of unknown type.

But yes, 100 members of the doomsaying Greek Chorus are always welcome. No love.
