John Stewart sold us out!
Last night he was more than happy to riff on the Gonzales hearing, but said nothing about the contested electors of Ohio. Of course, Howard Zinn sold us out with his silence too.

While I'm at it, let's make a list of all the sell outs:

*George Soros: the guy is rich enough to buy the entire state of Ohio, but chose not to do so. Sell out.

*Noam Chomsky: still don't see a book about the events in Ohio yet. Obviously a right-wing stooge.

*Jimmy Carter: too busy building houses for poor people to fight for us in Ohio.

*Dennis Kucinich: speaking of fighting, if this guy really wants to fight for us, he would have brought a baseball bat to Congress yesterday and smashed Dennis Hastert's knees. He didn't, so I guess he's too much of a pussy to stand up for us.

*The folks at Medecins Sans Frontiers and Red Cross: too obsessed with tsunami relief to tackle the most important issue facing us, voter fraud in Ohio.

*Hell, everybody else except me: none of you are pure enough.

Because every single member of the Democratic Party except for me is a sell-out, I have no choice but to leave the party. Furthermore I have no choice but to announce my intentions to leave the party 10 times a day here.

3. i don't think they are sellouts
Chomsky and Zinn have bigger issues to deal with...yes, i'm sure they know about fraud, they've studied it in countless other nations...but, once you are at that level of awareness about history and politics, these things don't shock you.

They are most definitely not right-wingers...they just can't be a member of every damn left cause out there.

8. THE DAILY SHOW IS FILMED AT NOON.
Ugh.

Anyway, it's a lot easier to make jokes about torture hearings that then ruin of democracy.

Moreover, advocating that these leaders owe you something is insane. What the hell are you talking about with a baseball bat? And Noam owing you a book? Or Jimmy Carter owing the populous something other than a roof over our heads?

I know I am playing right into your game here, but you're delirious. Those people don't owe you anything. Want to go after Hassert? Do it yourself. Want a book written? Do it.

28. The "show " part is daily...the interviews are taped in advance.
I went to a taping about a year ago around 3:00 pm. The show was that night. However, the interview that I saw (a pop singer whose name escapes me) was not used for that night's show. They run them a couple days behind, sometimes more, sometimes less. That's why Stewart and his guests often joke about the movie that "just opened," when it hasn't actually opened.

Most of my SARCASM comes from how I feel at the time. Tomorrow I will probably laugh at how stupid it was, but for now I take everything with a grain of salt. You cannot get others to be serious about things until there is real hardship it looks like to me.

The one I try to remember lately is " There can be no revolution when the peoples belly is full". Of course most farm animals are kept fat and sassy till slaughter, but their not smart :scared:

100. The sarcasm is to ridicule the ridiculous.
Voting for the objection would have served to accomplish NOTHING.

Speaking out in support of it isn't "standing together" enough for you?

Voting for it would have damaged the case for election reform and allowed them to paint the dems as partisans and sore losers. But they don't need to do that now. We are painting them with a different brush, though one just as destructive.

Our party is in a SHITHOLE right now. Our party leaders lick DOG EXCREMENT off of Bush's shoes for NOURISHMENT. That is the state of our representation is at the moment.

And, you know what, if you're liking- in fact, if you're not absolutely SICK OF THE BULLSHIT coming from our leaders by this time- you should just go ahead and join the Republicans.

Guess it was targeted more towards people who consider themselves Democrats above all else, as opposed to those naive fools who value principles over party.

Hunh- funny thing is, you can easily find threads in which people deride Republicans for doing the same thing.

Even better, IMO, is the frequent repetition of the two most offensive phrases on DU - "get over it" and "move on".

Plenty of irony in this thread, all right.

55. I'm all for that myself.
To the point where I want Howard Dean to be our party's chair. I think he's going to stand up for us and make sure everyone's fighting and not backing down.

But blind fighting, which is what many here expect, isn't going to get us anywhere. You have to face the fact that we do not own the media, and thus, cannot take the same shrewd actions that the Republicans do for, whether it's right or wrong, we will take a hit for it.

I'm all about being bold with a strong liberal message. I'm not about suicide missions.

Or you could start out on the state or local level.
Look, I understand the importance of leadership in the Democratic party. I really think the OP is just taking the piss out of posters who praise a politician one day, damn him the next, rinse, repeat ad nauseum over a long period of time. There's a lot of that here as of late. I wouldn't say he is insulting our cause, just making parody of the fickle-minded here on DU.
And you have to admit, the image of Kucinich breaking Hastert's kness with a baseball bat is hilarious. :)

75. Gee, thanks Kreskin
for that impressive feat of mindreading.

Unfortunately, you're way off base. What I, personally, value are the Progressive (dare I even say Liberal?) principles once advanced by the Democratic Party. As for my lack of political savvy, again your deep insight into my life is amazing- and amazingly wrong.

Your reference to the "game" is telling, though- and that's where we seem to differ. Spending most of my life in ACC country, I know what team spirit is and when it's appropriate... and inappropriate. I don't view this as Our Team vs Their Team. In fact, for the most part, I don't consider Government to be a game. The decisions being made in DC (and in state capitols) affect my life and the lives of people I care about- I don't give a happy damn whose team wins if it doesn't benefit us.

I became a Democrat because of what the Democratic Party stood for, and as long as the Party continued to stand for those values, I was happy to continue to call myself a Dem. Unfortunately, my values are no longer reflected by the actions of the DP. Words, yeah, sometimes. BFD. If words actually meant anything, Gee Dumbass would be a compassionate conservate, a uniter and a peace president.

My BIL just left for another TOD in Iraq last week. What did the Dems do to prevent our invading a sovreign nation? How many Dems fought against PATRIOT? Against Ashcroft's/Olson's/Negroponte's confirmation? Against Theft 2000? And on and on and on.

So I'm hanging up my pom-poms and moving on to support those who are willing to work for the kind of government I can believe in.

As for pragmatism and savvy- you can call it that if you want. Appeasement and submission work just as well.

81. Self-righteousness gets you nowhere.
What did the Dems do to prevent any of the things you list? When you wake up and realize that short of starting an armed rebellion the Dems haven't had ANY FUCKING POWER over the last 4 years to do prevent ANYTHING from happening. The only power we have is the filibuster, and we've used that, but it cannot be used for everything we happen to disagree with. Those things were happening with us or without us whether you like it or not.

Get used to that idea, because unless you learn pragmatism, you're going to be living it for a long, long time.

86. Pragmatism doesn't mean sticking your head in the sand...
... or anywhere else.

First, please clarify and show an example of "self-righteousness", as one of us obviously has no clue what it means. I'm discussing a parting of the ways based on philosophical differences; you're accusing me/others of moralistic narrow-mindedness. If anything, patronization and challenging someone's intelligence, realism and common sense for disagreeing with you would fit the definition better.

And as for pragmatism, my understanding is essentially, making the best of what you've got - not claiming that you don't have control and are therefore required to go along with your opponents and hope that one day you'll be back on top.

Second, I'm wide awake- and would argue that it's those who cover their eyes and ears, chanting "la la lalala" whenever they're confronted with criticism of Their Team, who need to wake the fuck up. That type of attitude is beyond Freeperish.

Third, I'm laughing at your bogus assertion that being the minority party = impotence. History proves otherwise. Of course, in those instances (think Newt or Helms, f'rinstance), having a little courage helped. Additionally, filibuster is not the only tool the minority party has in Congress.

Last, we've already been living it for a long, long time. And under pragmatic Dems, even! So how, exactly, do you figure that More Of The Same = Improvement?

90. What YOU aren't willing to understand is that I'm talking about neither-
Unless you honestly believe that voting your conscience is a bold idea or suicidal?

If, *IF* Senate Dems genuinely believe that the Ohio vote was clean, so be it. I disagree, but respect their views. If they believe that there were valid grounds to challenge its legitimacy, it's neither bold nor suicidal to vote to challenge. The results would not have been changed but 45 Senators would have made one hell of a more significant point than 1 (whose position was totally repudiated, btw, by the votes of the rest of her party)

Would it have been bold in ideas or suicidal to have said or PATRIOT "hey, we just got this bill in last night- how 'bout we take a couple days to read it before voting on it?"

Rejecting some of Bush's more loony nominees - bold or suicidal?

The more appropriate word, IMO, is principled.

115. Thank you for all of these posts.
I was trying to find a way to jump in, but when I read your posts I realized I didn't have to. You are absolutely right. It is this attitude that "it doesn't matter what the Repubs do as long as we can blame them for it' that really gets to me. It does matter what our government does regardless of who is in power. And if the Democratic Party is only interested in what will "affect the outcome of the election" and not on what is right and what is wrong then I'm out and no sarcasm in the statement. And I know that there will be folks who say "good riddance" and "bu-bye" and such, but I no longer care what that type of "citizen" thinks. It isn't only the Dems in congress who need to make principled stands, it is all of us, too.

123. Agreed emphatically
(and you should have jumped in - your post above is more articulate and to the point than all my accumulated blather)

I have a serious problem with that attitude, too, among certain others - specifically that Our Team Is #1 garbage... and the patronizing, smug tone from the "pragmatic" "realistic" types here who feel the need to point out the naivete of anyone who espouses principles over party label. Personally, I expect our elected officials to do their frigging jobs- R, D, or I- and if they don't, they don't need to be there.

As for the point a few folks have made about the Drama Queens who loooooove Olbermann/Stewart/Moore/whomever one day then hate 'em the next- yeah, I mock them too. But a lotta what I'm reading seems to be coming from people who have simply grown tired of saying "OK, one more chance." There IS a difference.

127. Actually, so am I - for the moment
Guess the point I was trying to make is that political affiliation doesn't necessarily go hand-in-hand with social positions (eg- all Dems, here or IRL, are *not* ultra-leftwing Libs, nor are all U-LWL's Dems.)

And I didn't find the OP funny at all- but then, I never liked Seinfeld either, so make of it what you will...

quoted "I'm a liberal progressive populist AND a democrat. I thought the post was funny and ironical. Don't try to put all us kitties in the same toe-sack."

This is kinda the problem with the party IMO. Too many interests and too many narrow focus people. There really is no way to generalize the democratic party. i am not saying that any of those interests are wrong...but theres too many voices shouting imo.

Just my opinion...

26. Well, since this is obviously sarcasm, I have one question for you
How much of this two party/same corporate master insanity can you take before you realize that the Democratic party is as complacent in selling the public down the river as the 'Pugs? Hasn't it been make clear to you over the past twelve years that while the Democrats will mouth pious offerings to the ordinary person, when push comes to shove they will do the bidding of their corporate masters every single time? Do I really need to read out the entire litany of atrocities that the Dems rolled on?

One definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over, yet expecting a different result each time. We have been engaged in this form of collective insanity for a long time now, how much longer do we have to participate in it before you wake up and realize that we are being bipartisanly screwed?

Not you, the original poster.

Are they even paying attention? Do they CARE that we have a bunch of empty suits for leadership, and our country is being destroyed?

And they think they're being clever with this shit? Trying to demean the people who actually DO give a shit.

Reminds me of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. They should spend less time trying to be clever, and more time opening their eyes and looking at the bullshit that's going on around them.

32. Oh I can believe it friend.
It is hard when one has invested so much time, effort, money and emotions into a group to change in a minute or a day. It is much like the Stockholm Sydrome, where one come to identify and empathize with one's torturers. Or like the person, child or adult, who still defends their abuser, even though they know that as soon as the cops leave they'll get the shit kicked out them, again.

I went through this stage about five years ago, and indeed fell once more for the ABB crap this last election. To me, it isn't a matter that we lost, it was how the campaign was conducted, and the fact that Kerry refuses to fight, not only for us, but for himself as well over the fraudulency in Ohio. So for me, enough is enough, no more Dems for me, I'm going Green. I've been fooled far too many times in my thirty plus years of political activity.

I think though that slowly but surely people are waking up and smelling the garbage. I think that the Democratic party is going to die a slow, agonizing death as more and more people see them for what they are, another corporate enabler. Right now the Dems have a choice, continue to do their corporate masters' bidding, and fade away, or stand up on their hind feet and fight for the ordinary person like they're supposed to, and thrive. The choice is up to them, but they are going to have to choose quickly, for a lot of people are running out of patience.

48. disrespectful bullshit ...
have your little satire ... the point you're raising is total bullshit ...

you used the phrase: "none of you is pure enough" ... why can't you respect the fact that many of us have very deep beliefs that the party fails to represent ??? why do you falsely suggest that there is a "purity" test ?? many DU'ers showed great pragmatism in supporting ABB after Kerry's IWR vote ... was that a "purity" test ???

and what's worse, you had to use blatant lies to make your point ... I watched Howard Zinn on TDS last night ... he was incredible ... this is the example you use to make your little satire ??? Zinn talked about 100,000 DEAD IRAQIS !! have you heard the Democratic Party raise this point ?? Zinn, making a comparison of Colombus to bush, stated that Colombus "went with his troops" ... have you heard the Democratic Party arguing that bush is a coward ?? Zinn talked about how the real mission in Iraq has nothing to do with promoting democracy; it has to do with procuring oil ... is that what you hear from the Democratic Party ??

the real sell out is the Democratic Party on the real and important issues ... your suggestion that DU'ers require purity is nonsense ... the truth is that the Democratic Party refuses to represent the views that many of us hold ...

and one last point, you used the phrase: "Because every single member of the Democratic Party except for me is a sell-out" ... first of all, 55% of DU'ers (of those who voted) said they planned to leave the party (based on yesterday's poll) ... why do you use the phrase "except for me" when so many feel this way ?? ... and why do you use the phrase "every single member" when most of those who are alienated by the party's actions regularly applaud those Democrats who stand up for what is right ???

the point you tried to make becomes very easy when you make up fake examples and distort the truth ...

It is hard to find humor in the betrayal of core values. It is hard to chuckle along with 100,000 innocent civilians slaughtered. It is difficult to snicker when the US is being destroyed as surely as is Iraq. But, hey, at least he isn't "pure"...

110. Good post !
I feel your frustration.

I'm sure Stewart will cover the vote challenge Monday night, those repug diatribes deserve a Daily Show treatment...especially that wingnut who referred to the "Michael Moore Wing of the Democratic Party"....like that was a bad thing...lol.

We can't leave the Dems! My favorite quote:

That which doth not kill us, makes us stronger :)

112. DUDE, YOU CRACKED ME UP...
ONCE THIS MORNING WHEN I READ THE POST, THEN LATER WHEN I READ THE RESPONSES.

You seem to have stepped on some toes, which is all to the good, I think. Sometimes it's good to remember that we are the Democratic Underground, not the Weather Underground or the Nader Underground or the All Things Liberal Underground.

'The I'm leaving the party' and the 'I'm going green' posts always get me. Go post on the Green Underground, then.

If you want to be dramatic, that's fine, just tell us you are being dramatic. Meanwhile, we have a country to take back, and lots of work to do. Our Democratic leaders have not been pure (friggin' DLC!), but believe me, they are (mostly) people of good heart who mean well for us. They have one other point in their favor, they are actually in positions of some power and responsibility, while we aren't.

Sometimes they need to be told what to do. DU is there for that reason. Sometimes they need our condolences, congratulations, thanks (THANK YOU MS. BOXER!), and cajoling. That is what we are here for.

This is not a 'the world is ending find a hole to cry in forum', or 'The Democratic Party is a Sell Out Party' forum. This is a 'we aren't giving up, we have a battle to win.' forum.

So lighten up. We aren't giving up, we have a battle to win. It will be long and hard, and will require strength of purpose, enduring patience and, yes, sometimes humor.

So laugh and fight, sing and slay. Democratic Brothers Arise and Fight!

113. Obviously the Chemtrails got 'em
That's the only possible explanation. They've been adding psychoactive drugs to the chemtrail mix and spraying it over their homes, then beamed in subliminal "ditch Kerry" messages.

Naturally, the whole effort was financed by the Rockefellers. :tinfoilhat:

117. Of course it's not like we're paying him to be the Dem spokesperson...
or something.

Then we could tell him what to cover every day.

And yes - I get the sarcasm. And no - I don't think that JS is as far to the left as I am.

118. Don't forget the biggest sellers-out: 'conspiracy theorists.'
These nutjobs who think that bad people HIDE things have really lowered the integrity of the party. They made Fox News and the NYT mad and that is unforgivable.

Tom Delay had it right-"the X-Files wing of the Democratic party" that thinks there's something HIDDEN in the voting software and don't trust the good citizens at DARPA are not real Americans.

131. It's funny to make fun of people who are frustrated.
Thanks for the funny post trying to make other DU's look silly. That was JUST what the doctor ordered. I think it would be really super funny if there were more threads mocking people who feel alienated from the party they voluntarily campaign for and donate time and money to.

Weeeeeeeeee. It just gets better and better.

133. Very funny, but doesn't change the fact that....
The democratic party is filled to the brim with wussy legislators who have no balls whatsoever. That's why we have had several rounds of irresponsible tax cuts that have left record deficits, NCLB, the patriot act, a homeland security bill that allows for union busting, and a Medicare prescription drug bill that sends 350 billion dollars to big pharma and HMOs.
