Maria Shriver (in Vanity Fair) |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 02:16 PM by skypilot
I picked up a copy of the Vanity Fair with Arnold Schwarzengger and Maria Schriver on the cover. I didn't buy it when it first came out because I wasn't interested in reading about those two. Later, I was in a bookstore here in Philly that carries back issues of magazines and I noticed that there was an article about publisher, and Bernard Kerik paramour, Judith Regan. I bought the issue. After reading the article about Regan I decided to give the Arnold/Maria article a try and in about the second paragraph there is a quote from Shriver where she refers to Republicans as being like a "stern father" and Democrats as being like a "permissive parent". I couldn't read any further. I never cared for that woman and now I think that I officially despise her. Did anyone else read the article in full? Did she redeem herself at some other point in it?

What I saw is that she seems to be just totally hot for the Gropinator, and that the sexual attraction is stronger than her ethics, her morals, and the beliefs she was raised with.

I still can't bring myself to read it. And the photos that accompany the piece remind me so much of those photos a few years back of Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal when Vanity Fair did a piece on them.

My father and mother are both VERY liberal people...Democrat voting all the way (heck, I think my dad voted Green in 2000).
And let me tell you...there was nothing permissive about my upbringing...not at least until 16-18 years of age.
He still lectures me on stuff, and I'm 25!
Don't believe the bullshit in Vanity Fair, of all publications.

5. She's merely repeating what others have said. |
|
Isn't that the same idea George Lakoff discusses in his writings?
No, IMO, she deson't redeem herself in the article at all. I mean, Arnold proposes elimination of the state Commission for the Status of Women, but Maria proposed building a California Women's History Museum and that makes it all okay? She said there were photos of all the govs, but not of the first ladies, so adding their photos actually benefits us? :wtf:

one heartbeat away from starvation. Word. Your body begins to eat the protein in your heart muscle - that's how we lost Karen Carpenter. Such a tragedy. These gals also must have a difficult time maintaining adequate nourishment (blood sugars) for even their mental functions.

11. The article was apparently written... |
|
...just before the whole Bernard Kerik bomb blew up and before the revelations of his affair with Regan. At the time of this article Regan was still known only as his publisher so there wasn't anything juicy about the two of them yet.

that effect. The quote, about Kerik's book cover, was used to illustrate Judy's jaunty little potty mouth, and how it has made her one of the most feared women in publishing.
She also sounds like the boss from hell.

25. The Vanity Fair article... |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-07-05 03:28 PM by skypilot
...made her out to be someone with a preoccupation with sex and raunch. There was a "60 Minutes" segment about her on Wednesday. Her publishing company is putting out a couple books that focus on porn. One is actually a coffee table book with pictures of porn stars dressed and undressed. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

26. Yeah, it was interesting the way they spun it. As if that was what gave |
|
her her power. That she could be raunchier than the men around her.
I kinda wish she had been Bill O'Reilley's publisher. That could have been an interesting little chemistry. She seems like she'd be into the loofah thing.
It's been fun to hear Randi Rhodes go off on the Kerik/Regan thing. She has a truly NY perspective on it all, and finds it amusing as hell.

15. How is the GOP the stern father?! |
|
Isn't the stern parent the one that makes you balance your budget?
And the permissive one lets you spend all your money and go into debt, don't worry about the consequences?
The stern parent makes you tell the truth and take responsibility for your actions, even if it isn't pleasant. *cough* Iraq *cough*
The permissive parent says it will all be okay, don't worry about it, and never makes you face the facts.
I think she has the parties mixed up.

but only after I had torn off the cover and used a Sharpie to black out those hideous photos.
Here's my take on it - Maria Shriver's a power-mad nitwit who really thinks she's destined, like Oprah, to do "great things" for women, all of whom are inferior to her. Hence, she's off making speeches and throwing token tidbits to programs here and there, while her mutant spouse puts California even further down the hole.
What's even more offensive is how she is characterized as a "successful journalist." I ask you - what did she ever do except some TV interviews, and would she have gotten the job if she didn't have the Kennedy/Shriver name? Not at all. She'd have gotten nothing.
But, above it all, is the fetid quality of the entitlement they both exhibit. As if anything they've ever done prepared them for the roles they now occupy - thanks, of course, to some nasty manipulation of the California constitution by Republicans, let's not forget.
Spare yourself the trouble, and just rip out that article. The rest of the magazine is quite good, and Graydon Carter, the editor, has been unsurpassed in his pressuring of Fuckface and his calling to task all those vile creatures in the White House and Congress. I'm a big Graydon Carter fan.

We'll be somewhere on the road back to sanity when people learn to distinguish between a journalist and a teleprompter-reader with a "pretty" face.

30. Apropos of the Kennedy/Shriver thing |
|
There was a special on TV a few weeks ago about the "Kennedy curse," or something like that. I barely paid attention.
But, a couple of the Shriver sons - who are carrying on some absolutely great Kennedy/Democrat/leftie traditions (Special Olympics, involvement in local politics - Santa Monica - when the current regime got repressive, environmental stuff) - were asked about their brother-in-law, the Governor.
Up until that question, they'd been animated and articulate, quite the camera-savvy middle-aged men they normally are. But, when that question was posed, I could see them close down, their faces went blank, their voices flat, and their answers - which, to other questions, had been thoughtful and comprehensive - were brief to the point of bluntness, bordering of rude. There was clearly a line that the interviewer had crossed, and that was territory into which these men had no interest in going. They were not going to praise him; they were not even going to pretend that they approved of him.
It was really quite startling. Maybe there's hope coming from the Kennedys?

It must have been a rerun because I remember seeing something like that over a year ago. Didn't one of them say something like, "He's not one of us" when talking about Arnold? I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same program. I remember the same unenthusiastic response--with barely hidden disdain--at the mention of Arnold.

on Gray Davis. Had she had any honor she would have moved Arnold towards a position wherein he might have made it clear that he would let Davis finish his term and then consider running. BUT, OH NO! MARIA SHRIVER WANTED SO PATHETICALLY TO BE CALIFORNIA'S FIRST LADY, THAT SHE ENDED UP BEING CALIFORNIA'S FIRST WHORE.

The article basically portrays her (rightly so IMO) as the brains in this wacky marriage. He supplies the celebrity and idiotic one-liners and she actually provides the platform. I got the impression that her marriage to Ah-nold was more an act of rebellion than love.

If it's a rebellion against her famously Democratic family I say they should just disown her ass. She's already dismissed them--and us--as the "permissive parent". Maybe that permissive parent should show her some tough love. Fucking twit.

I know nothing of her father, Bobby Shriver, but it's interesting that she equates the abuse of Republicans with paternal love.
Interesting that she is "hot" for a man who publicly sexually denigrates her.
Is that what your "stern" father was like, Maria? Did your permissive mother stand by and let it happen?

And yeah, "stand by and let it happen" is what the Kennedy women do/did with their husbands. And Maria's Aunt Jackie married a "Joe Kennedy type" too. Egotistical and womanizing.

the time she replaced Diane Sawyer on the early news way back in the seventies I believe. She just seemed to me to be too dumb and self involved to be a serious journalist. I think the Kennedys pulled some strings to get her that job. I felt there were many other women out there with journalism degrees that could have done the job better, but were overlooked because of the entitlement Maria enjoyed through her family.
I also truthfully don't think she understands what a Democrat is as contrary to a Republican.
