If they get to 60 that means NO FILLIBUSTER?!?! That would suck.

Would they be able to get the privitiziation of SS through without a problem?

How big would the Tax cuts be?

What judges would be confirmed?

I just can Imagine what Bills would be running through the Senate if they got to 60 seats. No fillibuster would suck.

some democrats will stand and fight but they can`t stop the rising of the Reich. i was born after the war that saved millions of people from the insanity of men who thought they were gods and now i may die knowing that i to have lived under the insanity my fathers generation gave thier lives to save us from.

10. Judge Roy Moore would either be in the DC Court of Appeals
or the SCOTUS, and would be wearing a robe with the Ten Commandments embroidered on it...

Tax cuts for the top 1% would be around 90%, tax increases on the bottom 90% would be 90%.

They would abolish SS, not privatize it.

13. I look at the list of senate seats up
and it just doesn't look like much room for change.

Maybe some retirements will change it, but I don't see many vulnerable seats either way.

17. We need to work for a modest 2-3 seat gain in '06
Assuming that we have a good presidential candidate in '08, it will put us in good positioning to win the senate in '08.

Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 04:28 AM by ribrepin
They may run Rossi and if he stops whining, he could win it. There's a lot of pissed off Rossi voters around here.

Cantwell voted for the war in Iraq. It'll hurt her in 2006.

14. What if they get 66?
The constitution can be rewritten with a 2/3 majority of both houses, without having to go to the people.
Nice thought, huh?

18. They need 3/4ths of the state legislatures to approve ammendments, though
We've got the Northeast, Illinois, Minnesota, the West Coast to prevent that from happening. They won't be able to LEGALLY fuck with the constitution with 66 senate seats, although they have done a good job of doing so illegally.

29. And if those go?
Don't say it can't happen...
It's my belief that they are trying for a 1 party state, and certainly the noise that much of the neocons make indicate that that is indeed their goal. They have soemwhere around 2/3 of the state legislatures now, along with the governorships. If they get that expect a few "revisions" to the Constitution.

30. State legislative chambers are rougly 50/50
Democrats swept legislative chambers in places like Colorado and Montana this year, even though Kerry lost in those states. The deep south still has a lot of democratic state legislatures and the northeast has some that are so democratic that they can over-ride almost every veto that the governor issues. I think of the partisan controlled chambers, it's 48/47 Republicans, or something very close to that number. Republican sweeps of the state legislatures could happen, but not while they hold so much power in Washington. State legislature sweeps come from a backlash effect and the backlash can't be in your favor when you're in power.

31. Well, I hope you're right
and I admit I haven't been up on the state legislatures since the election. I do know though that they were turning Repub a few years ago. I must admit, I don't want to rely on the state legislatures though. It looked a lot less like a 1 party State 10 years ago.

15. If?
Where have you been the last three election cycles?

Still no paper trails. Still not much of a cry for electoral reform from the "opposing" Party. The media is still cowed by the GOP. And Corporate USA is still making enormous political contributions.

At this point, bank on a 60+ Republican seat Senate.

16. You are thinking too small
*Gitmo base relocated and expanded on the mainland.
*Expanded powers of domestic surveillance for homeland security.
*A draft.
*Expanded war throughout the middle east.
*Extreme Internet censorship.
*Radical adjustment of the entire judicial process.
*Creation of a debtor society for the lower economic class.
*Clean water and uncontaminated food become luxury items.
*Loyalty oaths or mandatory re-education for those at-risk to become terrorist sympathizers.
*Loss of citizenship and reclassification as enemy combatants for all SUSPECTED for terrorism or conspiracy thereof.
*Lots more bad TV shows.

24. I braved my second post starter on this very subject.

Got not one reply. I'll just say it much more briefly here. The 2006 election will be the election that convinces me, as an American, if all is lost for many years to come or if we do have any chance left at all at democracy.

They have 55 senators now. Don't you think they can bump that number up to 60 considering the fact that they own the voting machines and the vote counters? If election reform has not taken place any where in any way by 2006, we're doomed. It will be right wing one party rule.

Doomed.

25. Don't be placing all your hopes in the filibuster basket
The Filibuster is a tool to be used sparingly.

If you think the Democrats are going to be filibustering everything that comes down the pike, think again. On damn near any given issue I'll bet you there are five or more Democrats who are willing to break ranks for some pork barrel insertions.

And if it starts to get in the way of judicial nominations, the republicans will simply change the rules.

Expecting anything different will leave you very disappointed. We're already horribly screwed. There are two things that "unscrew" us now.

1) rise of a viable opposition party before 2008 (maybe the Democrats)
or
2) dissolution of the United States, whether through internal strife or foreign invasion -- and that could just end up screwing us all over again, depending on who's doing what

The second alternative is a sucky one, and the first is iffy. We're about as screwed as screwed gets.
