anyone see the new released Tsunami video ?
Edited on Sat Jan-08-05 10:36 AM by JI7
i don't have a link to it but someone else might. but it was shown on CNN and it shows the wave coming in and the water rushing on to the land. it is better than other videos of showing how horrible it was. the force of the water was so powerful that you can see large objects just flying away with the water or getting instantly destroyed. the video also shows the return of the water into the ocean which dragged away many people.

at first it seems like most people would have died just from drowning and i'm sure they did. but watching that video and seeing how big the wave was and especially how powerful the water hit i'm sure many were instantly killed without ever having known something was happening.

on edit, i found a link to the video , look on the right side where it says "BBC NEWS: VIDEO AND AUDIO New footage shows the impact of the tsunami on Thailand "

5. no, the one i saw was far worse
it's not just the wave, but the water behind it as it just came rushing in and destroying everything. it looked so bad that you can imagine getting killed by the force of the water itself.

at first i use to just think of a large wave and a bunch of water washing on but never imagined the force of the water to be as bad as i saw in the video.

2. i did see it but can't find a link yet either.

it seemed like it was even more the force of the water behind it than the height of the wave itself. terrifying.

edited to add: RoeBear, it's a different one. i saw that one you linked to - is that the one the 16-year-old boy taped?

3. yes, true, not just a large wave, but a huge gush of water that just
forced in . the wave is one thing, but seeing that huge and very forceful rush of water just coming in shows how bad it was.

affected area said that people in one of the worst affected areas do not know how to swim--that had they known how to swim they would have all survived the tsunami... how ignorantly stupid can she get?

edited to add: i have seen a video on cnn in which people start to run away from the tsunami when the waves start to go onshore, but there is a man just standing there, with his back to the incoming water, who is just stunned, or shocked, or paralyzed, and when the waters come in they knock him down and then take him with them.

8. You're correct
Most people on the beaches died instantly and never knew what hit them. I read that it was coming in at 500mph. Think 'near jet' speed.
A car hits you at 50 and you're likely to be toast.

That was amazing video.

11. The speed of a deep wave is
equal to the square root of gravity times depth. Therefore, as the wave approaches shallower water, it slows down. At the beach, the wave is doing about 40 mph.

The people engulfed by the wave would not die instantly, but as a result of drowning or being battered by bathymetry or debris.

9. This one is INCREDIBLE.... From a hotel roof top on Patong Beach
the camera in this one is pretty steady.... you have to watch this for yourself... I can't even start to describe it.

(You may have to download the 10.5M Windows Media file to play it, at least I did.)
