Sen. Salazar baffles on Gonzales

By Diane Carman
Denver Post Columnist

E-mails have been pouring into Ken Salazar's old digs at the Colorado Attorney General's Office. Many are from supporters sending congratulations and good wishes.

But others express dismay.

The writers are wondering what on earth the Democratic senator is doing buddying up to the likes of Alberto Gonzales. Is this the first sign of a Ben Nighthorse Campbell-style defection to the Republican ranks after using the Democratic Party to get elected?

After all, when Salazar introduced President Bush's nominee for U.S. attorney general - a guy opposed by retired generals, veterans groups, civil rights organizations, even the Mexican American Political Association - it was one of his very first official acts as a senator.

And given that Gonzales' confirmation is virtually guaranteed by the Republican majority in the Senate, Salazar's support was wildly unnecessary.

Sure, Gonzales would be the first Latino to head Justice. But this guy brings plenty of smelly baggage to the job.

3. Barring illegal activity or a breach in professional ethics, I am
opposed to any recall. I understand your consternation with Salazar, but I'm looking at this from CA, where a misguided recall lost us the Statehouse.

4. Here is what I just sent to Salazar.
I can't find his new e-mail address, but this is his old one.

Please Forward this to Senator Ken Salazar
attorney.general@state.co.us

Dear Senator Salazar,

As one of your delegates who campaigned many hours for your election to the US Senate, I was shocked that your first important act as Senator was to help introduce Alberto Gonzales to the Senate confirmation hearings. I hope that you realize that among his many indiscretions are incompetence in reviewing Bernard Kerik's qualifications to become Homeland Security Chief and a flippant disregard of the Geneva Convention.

I believe that your friendship was unfairly used by Gonzales and his superiors to their advantage. What about the need of the people for politicians who are trustworthy?

I certainly hope that you are not as foolish to actually vote for Gonzales' confirmation.

5. Unfortunately...
...we are dealing with the GOP. The GOP complains about "race politics" and claims that Democrats are always playing the "race card", but they NEVER fail to claim it's bigotry when a right-winger who happens to be (choose one or more: black, female, hispanic, left-handed, etc.) is criticized by anyone.

Now, I'm of the belief that we need to start loudly and aggressively calling them on their bullshit rather than trying to figure out ways to "play nice" with assholes. Many in the Democratic Party seem to disagree though, being under the impression that they are dealing with a Republican party now a thing of the past.

6. Yeah, it would have been better

if Coors had won.

Hell, it would have beeen better if Dems had less than 30 seats.

Now, I'm just as upset as others that Dems are rolling over on this confirmation, but I am just as tired of dumb statements like "recall/kick out senator X from the party because he voted for/against something".
