"CBS Fires Four Staffers After Memo Probe"
NEW YORK (AP) - Four CBS News staffers were fired Monday following the release of an independent investigation that said a "myopic zeal" led to the airing of a discredited story about President Bush's military service.

The panel's 224-page report detailed dozens of missteps, including the reliance on documents that were allegedly forged to a circle-the-wagons mentality that compounded the damage.

CBS fired Mary Mapes, producer of the report aired Sept. 8 on "60 Minutes Wednesday"; Josh Howard, executive producer of the show; his top deputy Mary Murphy; and senior vice president Betsy West.

Dan Rather, who narrated the report, was faulted for "errors of credulity and overenthusiasm," but was not disciplined by top CBS executive Leslie Moonves. Rather announced in November that he was stepping down as anchorman of the "CBS Evening News," but insisted the timing had nothing to do with the investigation.

1. Why are myopic zeal and overenthusiasm only bad if you're liberal?
At least they were not willfully misleading or withholding facts from the public. Granted, they should have dug deeper, but...

2. hmmm fully transforming the Investigative reporter
into the Stenography Corp, which will never ask any inconvenient questions, but wait for the news to be given to them by the Government's new Ministry of Truth

4. the problem is they were a stenography corp in this case. their
little screw up totally destroyed the issue of bush not completing his time in the service. instead the story became dan rather. they deserve to get fired, to bad it's not for the reason that I would like.

7. Hey, have you noticed the investigation never says the documents weren't
accurate?

The investigation doesn't say Bush did serve his time as the Republicans like to claim. They also steer clear of the fact that Bush WAS grounded and won't discuss why. Guess they think the American people don't deserve the whole truth. Either that or Thornburgh is scapegoating CBS to cover up for his old boss' son yet again.
