7. The origional term was Skid Road
And it originated in Seattle in the logging days. It has since been corrupted or just colloquialized to Skid Row.

9. Another take on the location of origin, but does come from "skid road"!
Skid Row

This term for a run-down area of a town where the unemployed, vagrants, alcoholics, tend to congregate is American in origin, dating to about 1931.

It comes from an older term, skid road, referring to a logging road paved with tree trunks, or skids. This usage dates to around 1880. An area of a town where loggers hung out was usually a rough neighborhood and/or the red-light district, a place where vagrants and bums could also be found in numbers.

It is often claimed that the original skid row was in Seattle. The available evidence, however, does not support this claim. The earliest known use of skid road is from the Adirondack region of New York.

13. Here's a book I read years ago about the history of Skid Road
As can be expected, a bunch of pioneer loggers in the wild west attracted a rough and tumble bunch of pals. Eventually, it came to mean anyplace where unfortunates lived.

nuff said.

2. I believe the phrase that refers to the poor is skid "row"
so no, I wasn't offended by the title but rather confused by trying to figure out what they were getting at.

4. No.
But I know where the term "skid road comes from."

What is the Seattle media calling the "tent city" nowadays? I'm offended how Seattle keeps fucking around its homeless population however.

5. Here's my guess ( haven't gone to the link)
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 03:18 PM by MindPilot
Local blues band Skid Road is leaving it's long-time gig at the Downtown Dive for a high-profile engagement at the North Sound Nightclub.

On edit: after checking the link, I don't find the headline offensive, but it is kinda dumb.

6. Without reading the story it sounds like the author is trying to refer to

Skid Row and the article will be about a newly poor section of a town. The headline doesn't offend, it does however confuse. So far I rate it a bad headline.

I'll read the story and report back...

OK. Now that I've read the story I get it, but I'm mad because I was pulled in with false pretenses (or is it false expectations), either way, I rate it a 6 out of 10 for creativeness and 2 out of 10 for relating to the story.

10. I'm from the Seattle area, too, and when I checked the Komo News
website this morning for school closures, I glanced at the article, and I thought it was about the mobile "tent city" for the area's street people.

I wasn't really offended, but it was a poor choice for a headline.

11. As a Seatle Resident...
I would say most of the content found on local television news is offensive to me. The stations around here are completely lame.
