Need Help Concerning Recruitment Info. |
|
I am so pissed that I could scream. Today in the mail, I received recruitment information from the Marines addressed to me concerning my kid. This is ridiculous, my kid is no where near 18 years old!!!! I put a call into the principal's office at the school and am awaiting a return call. My questions are......can I ask that my kid's infomation about him not be released in the future to them? Is this my right? Also.....I thought that 'they' only requested information from the high school concerning juniors and seniors? This is utter bullshit and I don't want to be bothered with getting this shit in the mail, daily. My kid spends his days in doctor's offices due to a chronic healthcare condition, has been for years. I don't need this stress about recruitment bullshit in addition to the stress of him having health problems. :grr:

1. That is the Ohio guidance counselers for you. |
|
These people are sitting in the Guidance office at schools only to give names to and I am sure recieve freebies from colleges and the military. Our child gradtuates this year and has asked numerous times about specific college information only to be told they can find it on the web but yet we recieve mailing after mailing from the all branches of the military and colleges. I simply put on the military ones, return to sender and put them back in the mail.

3. I don't think you can stop them. |
|
It's probably considered public information.
My brother has a good approach to the junk solicitations. If they come with a response card with pre-paid postage, he sends them all back blank so the mailer pays. Can you imagine what would happen if everyone did this? It might cut down on junk mail.
You could always write anyone who will listen from your school board to your Congressperson. You might feel better.

4. This has been coming up a lot lately |

Under FERPA, enrollment and contact information for students from Kindergarten through Grad School can be released yearly in a "student directory" to any third party government agency or private corporation that requests it and shows a genuine need for the information. Schools have traditionally used their best judgement when releasing this information and kept it out of general distribution as much as possible, but another law about 10 years ago prevented them from keeping the list from military recruiters.
The good news is that you can simply call your childs school and ask them what needs to be done to remove your childs name from the list per the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1973. They can't say no, and once his/her name is off the list the recruiters will stop calling.
One warning though...colleges and universities also use the lists to send recruitment information to potential college students, and often to verify enrollment of students trying to get in. Removing your child from the schools directory information will stop ALL unsolicited contact, including those that might be beneficial.

My daughter received notification that he was required to register for the draft when she turned 18 years ago.
I put it in File 13. Suggest you do the same and take your blood pressure meds. You'll feel better.

for all of your thoughts on this. The letter received states "Since you are a junior/senior now..." The kid's no where near that..... I'll likely talk to the principal concerning this and stamp a big old "Return to Sender" on any future correspondence that I receive. Burns me up.....

7. You need to request in writing from the principal |
|
that your child's name not be released to the military. Make sure you bring it in personally after you copy it; I just did this for my two sons. Their principal actually encouraged me to do this.

My 13 year old son's school RELEASES the info to the recruiters before he even gets in school! It's against the law for them to market to children.

is looking into this and contacting other parents. Apparently, my kid should NOT be getting information such as this at his age.
