CBS Memogate Report–An Insider’s Perspective

Paul Lukasiak, a researcher in Pennsylvania, was instrumental in original reporting by RAW STORY on President Bush’s National Guard service or lack thereof. He built the story which was eventually tainted by poor CBS vetting of documents related to Bush’s service, but the story–which asserts that President Bush was absent without leave (AWOL) from the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s–has stood the test of time.

Related story: Bush was AWOL from National Guard in 1972; Repeatedly misled press, public about service

By Paul Lukasiak | Special to the RAW STORY

Okay, since I’m mentioned three times in the report (twice, inaccurately labelled a blogger), and I even played a peripheral role in the verification of the Killian memos, I guess I can call myself an “insider” to some small degree.

(I’m Paul Lukasiak, and my website is called The AWOL Project. It’s at http://www.glcq.com. As the report correctly notes, when CBS wanted to find more Killian signatures in the publicly released documents, they came to me–and although I didn’t know why I was being asked at the time, I was asked a number of questions pertaining to the consistency of the memos with the rest of the documents.)

And from the facts of which I’m aware, the Memogate Report can be described in one word.

Bullshit.

The report is a complete smear job on Mary Mapes, and although Mapes made mistakes the manner in which the “facts” (and I use that term loosely) are presented are utterly biased.

1. there is plenty of evidence to prove the bastard was AWOL
yet they turn it all into a Dan Rather issue so the conservative sheep can express outrage over that instead of the fact that our so-called "leader" is a lying piece of shit.

2. He wasn't AWOL, he was a DESERTER
I was in the military. I know. The proper terminology is "UA" (Unauthorized Absence). AWOL is a term no longer used by the military to describe someone who has left their post without permission.

Anyone who is "UA" for more than 30 days is considered a DESERTER.

Because this clowns' name is Bush he is able to get aweay with shredding his military record and denying the truth.

4. Radio Wingnuts Were Claiming Today That "forgery" = "FALSE INFORMATION"
Uh, no. It is possible for "forgery" to be of TRUE information, which we know is correct is this case.

We know there was a web, a vast wingnut conspiracy of wingnut, psy-ops lawyers who set and sprung the trap.

The wingnut psy-ops lawyer from Atlanta with the Cuban wife who set the trap. And the wingnut psy-ops lawyer who FOUR HOURS after CBS aired their report went on the internet and declared the documents to be "forgeries". Yeah, like they KNEW since ROVE's elves prepared the documents from TRUE material. The internet declarer never saw them, did he?

ROVE did this time after time. Think about poor author of "Fortunate Son": ROVE fed him TRUE information, knowing the author had a questionable personable history, then ATTACKED the messenger, driving him to suicide.

9. The "forgery" claims were never proven; indeed those claims
(that is was made on M$ Word, not possible with typewriters, etc., ad nauseum) were proven false. The origin of the docs (possibly a set-up) remain unknown, and the only thing the nazi Thornberg's report claims is that they were not adequately vetted, not that they were false. Certainly the content was consistent with all known facts about chimpy's deserter status.

5. Didn't A CBS Person Speak w/ Someone @ WH About This?
Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 10:58 PM by otohara
Last week?

Did they ask the administration who should be fired over there at CBS and would it satisfy the *?

Completely caved into pressure on an issue that has been covered up since day one back when Jr. was running for state congressional seat.

Edited on Mon Jan-10-05 11:27 PM by bobbieinok
a major report rebutting Nightline's whitewashing of racial element in FL's 'vote'

also Lukasiak took up M Heldt's work (c 2003)on George being AWOL from the TX air national guard at salon.tabletalk.com.....Marty started the tabletalk threads in spring of 2000.....he and supporters at tabletalk were the only ones pushing this info from 2000 to late 2003

7.  MOST of the critics were dead wrong.
Lukasiak from the comments:

Mapes actions in defense of the report are also clearly flawed, but there is no consideration of the fact that most of the criticism of the documents themselves was baseless—and the volume of this baseless criticism was massive. Under the circumstances, Mapes “defensiveness” is understandable, even if its not forgiveable. MOST of the critics were dead wrong; had the criticism been informed and reasonable, it might have made a difference in the way she reacted. Yet the false nature of the criticism is never made an issue in the report.

8. Before even reading the story I will vouch for Paul Lukasiak
I met Paul at Salon Table Talk during IMPEACHMENT, and I watched his dogged investigations during the Florida recount and the aftermath. His account of Volusia county is the definitive record AFAIC.

Paul is one of us. Whatever he says I take seriously.

Okay, now I will read the article.
