How about a gross political generalization.
The heads of the Republican Party always seem as though they outsmart thier constituency.

The heads of the Democratic Party always seem as though they are being outsmarted by thier constituency.

The marginalization and in some cases illegalization of the left is the prime reason why there is such a disconnect between us and our politicians.

Let us not forget that as we wrangle with the democratic party. It was the right who spent decades and american lives to convince everyone that the left was a path to hell. That it was all just some level of communism, which wasnt a utopian philosophy, but an incarnation of the devil himself. It was the right who purged instititutions of leftist thinkers. It was the right who made the left radical, liberals insane and the right conservative in our language.

I know I could never run for political office in today's America, could you? And people wonder why our political arm is full of passionless triangulators.

We need to clean up our own house, but to do that, we need to build a movement designed to counter the right, to become what labor once was, a force the right has to reckon with. If we win back America, our Party will follow. We need to stop anylizing every square inch of our selves and turn our attention fully to our neighbors and our country, to these people who we need to be with us if we want to get where we know we can go if we embrace reason, peace, and justice.

1. I think you have something there
I was thinking along these lines today. What a system. It seems to encourage the scum to rise to the top.

There is nothing wrong with moderates. The problem is that our culture and institutions keep non moderates (amongst other groups) out of office. So we are left to choose from only one corner of our large party and out of that corner we choose the ones who do the best job trying to impress us.
