Dem candidates on CSPAN right now, amazing what the audience liked...
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 06:15 PM by HypnoToad
Lots of cheers and EVERY candidate has said something that's perked me up, but BY FAR the loudest cheers came when Kucinich took the stand and said out loud the first thing he'd to would be to cancel NAFTA and WTO!!! Even I, in my little apartment, jumped and yelled "YEAH! RIGHT ON!!!" and probably pissed off the neighbors downstairs! :spank:

Wow, it was an uproar! People loved the comment!

NAFTA is a real steaming pile.

I hope the other nominees were listening to what he had to say. While the other nominees were dissing Bush (and rightfully so may I add), Kucinich also talked about REBUILDING AMERICA'S INFRASTRUCTURE which is THE most important thing we need to do! I recently heard the other day that America's power, water, and other infrastructures are in bad trouble.

Kucinich is what America needs and needs badly!!

Oh, Dean's now on screen about supporting small businesses and how they create more jobs than large ones (fair enough, large ones and shoving all sorts of jobs overseas). That perked me up, but I still sure as hell disagree with him utterly on NAFTA and all. He's dreaming if he thinks he can have it both ways. Entering the realm of small business myself, I'll still give him a fair chance if he gets elected because it's more likely he'll become the candidate and win.

5. Quite! Watching this has indeed refreshed my spirit! But Dean, poor Dean
The Dems are really showing backbone and, in the limited tme provided, are putting weight into their attacks of Bush.

Even Lieberman's attck on Dean (re: FTAA) right now is entertaining. Oh, he just said the "Dean Depression" - a couple of groans, but I think the comment is hilarious. NAFTA has not worked - yet Dean wants to continue with it and adding other NAFTA-like programs as well! Dean's pulling a Bush for crying out loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. Gov. Dean's position on free trade (pro-fair trade)

HOWARD DEAN: No. What I said-- Well, I'll tell you what I said in a minute. But I'll follow my train of thought here, most briefly. Free trade has benefited Vermont a great deal. Here's the problem with free trade, and here's why I support fair trade, and why I want to change all our trade agreements to include human rights with trade, as Jimmy Carter included human rights with foreign policy. I still think NAFTA was a good thing. I think the president did the right thing. But the problem now is that, 10 years into NAFTA, here's what we've done. We have shipped a lot of our industrial capacity to other countries. And the ownership pattern, and the ratio of reward between capital and labor in those other countries is what it was 100 years ago in this country.

So the reason for NAFTA is not just trade. It's defense and foreign policy. That is, a middle class country where women fully participate in the economic and political decision making of that country is a country that doesn't harbor groups like Al-Qaeda, and it's a country that does not go to war. So that's in our intersect. That's why trade is really in our long term interest. What we've done so far in NAFTA is we've transferred industrial capacity, but we haven't transferred any of the elements that are needed to make a middle class. The truth is, the trade union movement in this country built America, not literally-- Well, they did do it literally with the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building, and things like that. But they built America because they allowed people who worked in factories and mines to become middle class people. And America was the strongest country on earth, and still is, because we have the largest middle class on earth, with democratic ideals. That is, working people in this country, by and large, feel that this is their country, and they have a piece of the pie, and it matters what they think.

Now, if you want trade to succeed, ultimately, we're going to have to create a climate in other countries that are beneficiaries of NAFTA where they can create a middle class with democratic ideals. That means we should not have any free trade agreements, and we should go back and tell the WTO that "you need also to include environmental standards and labor standards." Here's why. Today, if you run a factory in Iowa-- Let's suppose you spend a million dollars a year disposing of all the waste products that come out that are toxic. You can go to another country and dump all that stuff in the river and on the ground. So America, because we have environmental standards, and we're willing to trade, straight out, free trade, with countries that it's cheaper by a million dollars, before you even get to wages, to do business there, I think that's a big problem. We're essentially saying, "Our environmental laws are strict. It's cheaper for you to go into business someplace lese. Go ahead." That's the wrong thing to do.

The same with labor standards. I don't know why we should be shipping our jobs offshore when kids can work 12 hours a day, seven days a week, for a small amount of wages. And isn't that what America fought against 100 years go? Wasn't that the victory of the trade union movement? So it seems to me that my position makes sense. We've gone through 10 years of free trade. We've gotten to a position where we now need to change our trade agreements.

HOWARD DEAN: What I would say is, we've gone the first mile. The first decade has worked, for exactly the reasons you say. I don't disagree with the premise of the free traders. I had this discussion with Bob Rubin, and I said, "Here's the problem. We need an emerging middle class in these countries, and we're not getting one. So now is the time to have labor and environmental standards attached to trade agreements." He said, "You're totally wrong. I can't disagree with you more." I said, "How would you address the problem?" I haven't heard back. You have to deal with this problem. It's a serious problem.

JOE KLEIN: What if they say no?

HOWARD DEAN: Then I'd say, "Fine, that's the end of free trade."

JOE KLEIN: What do you mean, that's the end of free trade? Then we slap tariffs on these countries?

HOWARD DEAN: Yes.

JOE KLEIN: So you'd be in favor of tariffs at that point.

HOWARD DEAN: If necessary. Look, Jimmy Carter did this in foreign policy. If you can't get people to observe human rights, and say that we're going to accept products from countries that have kids working no overtime, no time and a half, no reasonable safety precautions-- I don't think we ought to be buying those kinds of products in this country. We're enabling that to happen. I'm serious.

3. I will repeat
for those who are clueless....

You cannot 'cancel' the WTO...or even NAFTA

Please stop cheering nonsense.

This is the kind of stupid remark that loses you elections, and makes you look like fools.

7. That's a pity, it makes EVERY candidate up there look like a fool then
Dean's intent on supporting it, as if there was a choice to get rid of it.

We can still thank Clinton for signing it in a rather permanent sort of way then... It's a horrible thing, NAFTA... we're stuck with it but we sure as hell don't want to make it worse, which is what Dean wants to do!!!

8. It does if they are all
talking about 'cancelling' NAFTA or the WTO, yes.

NAFTA has done a tremendous amount of good for the US...if Dean is keen on it....then he's the only candidate with brains.

Vote accordingly.

11. It is my observation that Lieberman is the only free-trader
Kucinich is the only bi-lateral-trader
And everyone else (Dean, Kerry, Gephardt, Edwards) are fair-traders.

12. Fair enough, how has it been good for the US?
I mean, NAFTA allows us to take Canada's oil in an event of an energy catastrophy. Yup, that's good for us. Puts Canada down the shitter, but they're not important when it comes to our survival. :eyes:

American jobs have gone south, that's good for SOME Americans.

What am I missing that has done REAL tremendous good for the US?

Please don't worry yourself to death about this issue anymore. You're beginning to look silly.

On edit: Gee and Kerry just specifically said that he is not in favor of canceling it but would prefer to tweak it. Is this FINALLY getting through?

22. Sorry you can't 'cancel' any of it
as you'd know if you simply read the agreements.

Too much work tho eh?

You can withdraw YOUR country...a stupid move, but doable.

But it's not yours to cancel.

Think again

13. If the USA withdrew from GATT and NAFTA, you bet they'd be canceled
You think those treaties mean squat without US participation? Any more than the ABM treaty?

Get real.

14. There is no GATT
it is the WTO...and there are 146 countries in it.

They don't need the US...no.

And NAFTA is also larger than the US

Please stop making yourselves look foolish

No wonder people think the Repubs are better on economic matters.

You all sound like you're in economic kindergarten.

For goodness sakes, learn about things before you run around screaming 'cancel' because you are upset over something.

There are 6 billion people in the world...your 300M are not a big deal.

thanks for pointing something out, but don't have to be sharp worded. We all want nearly the same goals, but differ on the methods. Let's keep educating one another and keep the pressure on Shrub and his looters!

17. "You cannot 'cancel' the WTO...or even NAFTA"
You know, call me whatever you like, but I believe I'll take the word of a man who has researched the matter and in the process confirmed that he absolutely can cancel US involvement in NAFTA and the WTO.

Ther is NOTHING stupid or nonsensical about insisting that human rights issues be addressed in trade agreements, despite your fussing about it.

19. LOL
well you can 'research' the matter all you like...but he is talking utter bullshit.

YOU can withdraw the US from the WTO or NAFTA...you can't 'cancel' them. They aren't yours to cancel.

And if you withdraw...be prepared for a Depression that will make the Dirty Thirties look like a fun time. You have absolutely no idea about either group or move. It just sounds like another 'quick fix' to you, doesn't it.

You can ask for world peace in trade agreements to...and an end to disease...anything you want...but it ain't gonna happen.

You guys are positively silly on economic and trade issues

No wonder Bush can walk all over you...dumb military moves or not.

Dear Dennis' "HellOOO!", and....I cracked up laughing!

What can I say, I like the occasional snark, and particularly coming from someone who isn't generally snarky. So I've got a wicked streak, sue me.

I'd have laughed if Dean had said it too.
