1. I'm surprised they even have something called 'Student Affairs'

no telling what evil thoughts that might put in those pristine, tender, young, innocent minds.

3. Not much different than ours at Mount Vernon Nazarene College
We got to wear jeans to class, though, and girls got to wear skirts and skorts (no shorts in class or chapel) as short as one inch above the kneecap while standing, while theirs can only be as short as the knee. Same movie and music rules, though, and same honor code (although I don't remember a 48 hour time limit). I didn't see if they were allowed to play with face cards--that rule didn't change at our school until my junior year, I think.

I have to laugh about it now or I'll go crazy. :)

5. Hey - I'm a Trevecca grad.
Our motto was To be rather than to seem but we knew that was just backwards, especially when rules were enforced only when the constituents were all on campus. Our dean of students used to scour the movie theater lines to find TNC students to expel.

Glad to see another reformed Nazarene!

20. Ours was "To seek to learn is to seek to serve"
They put that on everything. Ugh. Wow. Everyone knows Trivecca's the worst at rules and stuff, even worse than Olivet. I had a friend who went there, and she was told, as a religion major, that she had to wear ankle-length skirts and dress according to old versions of the Manual if she wanted to graduate.

Our dean of students just did his best at putting together the most comprehensive student informant system in the history of the world. Honestly--they knew almost everything that went on, and it was all due to informants. I called him Beria, personally.

29. Oh man, it wasn't that bad.
I went there in the 1970s and we had to wear a coat over our shorts to walk across campus to go to the gym and I thought that was ridiculous. Actually the rules were a real source of derision and amusement among the students. We all thought they were just stupid. However, it makes all the breaking of the rules much more fun. We had a taped recording of bells that would ring out at 8:00 AM. We slipped in a Black Sabbath tape and had that blast out once. We dropped a live chicken on the speaker in chapel (chicken was not hurt). Lots of stuff like that. So all in all I had a pretty good time there. Of course I am very far left (my politics always were) but I have found the fundamentalist bent of the church much too right wing for me. My husband and I noticed that there are quite a number of us that came out of that school and are quite liberal. Of course there are plenty that stayed fundie.

44. A lot of my friends also left the Church of the Nazarene
It's not just that we went liberal--we also left the evangelical churches, for the most part.

Ah, chapel pranks! The best one (not the crickets or the mice) was when they sent down those wooden gliders and parachute guy toys out of the heater ducts in the ceiling. Quite awesome. Made Gary Sivewright (our chaplain) cry. :) I wish I could shake the hands of those who did it.

I think the colleges have gone even further to the right since the seventies, mostly in backlash. Our rules were silly, mostly. It was in the enforcement when we got angry. I had a friend who was the assistant RA for our side of the apartment complex who went camping with some friends from high school. Because there were guys there (in a different tent, but no matter), they fired her and put her on social probation for the rest of the sememster. When I went to argue with the dorm mom about it, she told me that RAs cannot even look like they're breaking the rules--and she'd "stayed overnight in the presence of someone of the opposite sex." I asked her if we were all in trouble since whenever we went home, we all "stayed overnight in the presence of someone of the opposite sex." She started trying to explain to me, without using the word, that it was about sex. I said that if sex is the problem, put that in the handbook. Sheesh!

The most rebellious thing I did was muss up our president's hair at graduation when he handed me my diploma. The guy is obsessed with his hair (which looks fake but is actually real), even combing it over and over in public--even in chapel. I'd been wanting to ruffle it up for years and finally did. I thought he was going to kill me (he was in shock so bad afterward that the head of the Board of Trustees actually came over and tried to smooth down his hair!), but everyone loved it so much he just asked for an apology (yeah, I was sorry I hadn't done it sooner!). ;)

61. The Nazarene Church was ordaining women 100 years ago.
They started off pretty progressive in some ways but somehow they have ended up completely regressive and I can't think of any women preachers now.

Our school seemed to have the highest percentage of gay students per capita than any school I know. My husband's roommate of three years was gay, but for some reason he never picked up on that. After he came out and I found out how many gay guys there were I asked him why in the world they would pick Trevecca and he said it was so easy to hide it there. They cloister all the men together and all the women together and it was just the right place for it. We used to have a professor there that waited on the new crop of freshman every year. I found out about him from the hubby's roommate, who had been hit on (at the professor's house with his wife in the next room). He eventually got caught and expelled thankfully.

70. Wow--gays were hunted down at MVNC
I only had one GLBT friend who actually graduated. The rest left or were forced to leave. If you're GLBT, the handbook says that you have to come out to Student Development (supposedly so they can protect you from harrassment), and then they try to force you to get counseling by a guy who isn't a real psychiatrist or psychologist and who think you can be "cured."

One of the big debates all the time in the dorms was, "Would you allow them to put you with a GLBT roommate?" I was usually the only one in the room who was okay with it.

It was not something that got back to the administration or faculty. We just kinda talked among ourselves and I think we had graduated before we knew the whole scope of things. I have no idea if it is still the same situation there.

12. Wow--I remember MV Nazarene!
I went to Kenyon, down the road in Gambier, in the late 60s, about the time MVNC was founded. I think some of your students occasionally trekked to Gambier to attempt to bring the licentious elitists to Jesus, usually without a lot of success.

BTW, Kenyon wasn't exactly a beacon of progressivism either at the time. When they finally admitted women in 1969, they brought in all the dopey stuff like cloistering the women in their dorms after a certain hour, requiring men to check in at the desk, etc., etc. Needless to say, the men were under no such restrictions... Gad. Sounds funny in retrospect, but even then it was merely pathetic.

Most of us went over to Kenyon to escape, actually, when we went there. They had the best deli. Of course, a lot of students stayed away because it was well-known that one of the gates of Hell is there in the basement of one of the class buildings. ;)

71. Actually, the only other thing I heard in church was
that face cards also promote monarchy, which we were against for some reason. I do know a girl who got in serious trouble after they found tarot cards in her desk during a Christmas break search. Yeah, they'd search all dorms and apartments during the breaks--even drawers and under beds--to see if they could find contraband.

ENU and Point Loma are the two most liberal of all the Nazarene colleges--rules-wise and profs wise. Those of us in the middle get stuck at some odd places, let me tell ya!

That, and we all got off campus and did stuff we weren't supposed to. I'll admit it--I even danced when I was doing my semester in Russia. Shhhh--don't tell Student Development! LOL! Dancing was soooooooo against the rules.

53. Oh, I'm so sorry.
I always got people at the Naz with, "So, if Catholics aren't real Christians, then what about Mother Teresa? She's as Catholic as they come--a nun who started her own convent, she kisses the Pope's ring, she prays the rosary, she crosses herself in front of icons and statues of saints . . . So is she going to hell?" It made more than a few think.

Of course, an even better answer is, "So, you've read the Book of Life? You made sure that my name wasn't in it?" Usually gets them frothing . . . ;)

Sounds like in the Army, only worse. You should check out the presentation on acceptable and unacceptable female dress. They don't put you in a burka, just butt-ugly clothes.

I was going to include some of the slides from the slide show, but they use square brackets in the URLs and they play havoc with DU's software. I'll just say you should REALLY check out the slideshows.

I could NEVER stick to a dress code like this, but so what? It's not for me and I didn't go there. It's a private school and people CHOOSE to go there. (Freedom of choice, remember?) Part of the morality of the school is to practice what they preach. Can you imagine if the rest of the world did the same?

"Liberty University seeks to promote a positive Christian community. In maintaining the standards of the University, we each have a responsibility to one another. Therefore, the Honor Code above has been established. Students witnessing or having knowledge of a major infraction of school policy have the responsibility to confront the student and request that he/she report himself/herself to the appropriate Dean or Resident Director within 48 hours and/or report the alleged infraction and those involved to Student Affairs."

All that stuff goes on, it's just really far under the radar. We couldn't have sex, so people were known to use an adjacent corn field--until they raided that with huge searchlights and every security guy they could grab.

Of course, then the secret abortions that were ignored, as anyone who got pregnant or got someone pregnant would get kicked out of school . . . Yeah, they're pro-life.

24. I know why my nephews went to this type of school
It was because my fundie (quit drinking and got born-again) brother and his equally born-again wife, withdrew from the secular world as much as possible when they found Jesus. This included putting their kids, then in grade school, in a fundie school where they hold CD-burnings and teach kids not to question or think for themselves. It was decided for them they would attend the same bible college that everyone else in their church sends their kids to. At first, my nephews were just so glad to be away from home and it felt like they were getting on with the process of becoming adults. But both of them became increasingly unhappy after spending about a year there. One factor being they realized the only education they were receiving was to be a pastor, a missionary, or teach in an unaccredited fundie school like the one they graduated from. They were also put off by the constant barrage of hellfire/brimstone preaching from their teachers and administrators.

They both turned out to be exceptionally decent, hard working young men. And they both love their parents dearly. It's just that they're now old enough to think for themselves and decide that wasn't the direction they wanted to go in.

27. There are people who like that kind of environment
It's easy, from a moral choice standpoint. Having really strict rules to obey means you don't have to have your own internal debate about morality.

I knew a couple of girls in my dorm at WMU who had transferred from Liberty (this is in the early 80s). They liked it at Liberty, but decided that they were hiding from the real world. They also felt that their faith was strong enough to stand up to challenges and wanted to be able to discuss it with people who may disagree, because they felt that challenges to their faith would make them stronger christians in the long run. I actually respected their beliefs a great deal, even though I didn't agree with them about a lot of things.

31. Sometimes it's financial
It's the only school their parents will pay for them to attend, and they've been so insulated from reality in their Christian high school or homeschooling situation that they don't realize that federal financial aid even exists.

Also, for many of these kids questioning their parents or their church is completely outside their realm of experience. If their parents tell them to pick a Christian college, it would not even occur to them to look at other schools. Fear has a lot to do with it as well: You would not believe the lies you'd hear about "secular" institutions (for them, that would include schools like Georgetown or Brown that are affiliated with churches, but aren't of the fundamentalist sort). They are taught that they'll be ostracized in class and in the dorms for their beliefs, that Satanists roam the campuses for sacrifices, and that rape is as common as the Scantron sheet.

50. It can also be about being in a safer environment
I chose Mount Vernon because, after what I went through at my public school, I wanted a safe place to study. Of course, that was before I found out that no one was all that serious about learning anything other than the Bible. I had some wonderful profs who tried their hardest to actually teach, but for many, it was like four years of Senior High Camp at church.

Most kids had the parent issue, though, and by the time their parents saw what was actually going on (or the students did), it was too late to realistically transfer. I wanted to transfer after they banned the New Yorker magazine as pornography (long story), but I couldn't without doing at least another year in education, as none of my education classes would've been accepted.

17. And what is both funny and sad at the same time
Is that with all of these repressive rules, they are just encouraging a student to become a ticking psychological time bomb. Some of the wildest, most self destructive people I've seen were students/recent grads of various strict religious schools. When I lived in Springfield Mo, students of SW Baptist University in Bolivar(30 miles north) would come down on weekends and just rip up the town. Drink hard, lots of drugs, DUIs, raping and being raped, fights, violence, the list was endless. They put UMR's St Patty's day binge to shame, week in and week out. There would almost always be a list of student names in the arrested column in the Monday paper.

Rather than just being repressive and saying no, they should teach these kids how to handle life's temptations responsibly. Simply saying no makes the banned activity even more alluring, the forbidden fruit. And when these kids get out in the real world, they just don't know how to handle such things in a sensible manner, instead they dive in and go crazy.

94. I agree with that: Must be trusted to prove trustworthiness
And the problem with these restrictions is that some of them are pointless. No R rated movies? No unapproved music?

Guess we can't watch Passion of the Christ or Schindler's List.

These are college students and they should be treated as the adults they are or are becoming. Give them the chance to be responsible. Once they get the rebellion out of their systems, they can settle down and become responsible.

These rules are just giving these students a lot of something to rebel against. And the idea that these restrictions still hold even when not on campus is unbelievable. How would they enforce them?

"It has come to my attention that between junior and senior year, you attended a showing of Braveheart. I realize that it stars Mel Gibson, who was responsible for that excellent movie Passion of the Christ, but it was R rated. And by the way, you were seen walking down a sidewalk where a car went by blaring Iron Maiden's song "Number of the Beast" out the window. More demerits for hearing inappropriate music."

These are the same people who had a cow when Pat Boone's tongue in cheek album In A Metal Mood came out.

"All students are asked to display mature Christian behavior in social interaction. Proper respect must be shown to all individuals at all times. Harassment of any type will not be tolerated. Handholding is the only appropriate form of personal contact. Improper personal contact or other forms of public display are considered in poor taste. After dusk, students should not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in any unlighted area such as the ball fields, parking lots, parked cars, ravine or other wooded areas, etc. This is considered improper social behavior."

Yeah, right. I've talked to several girls who went there, and they quite frequently will engage in anal sex to avoid losing their virginity.

40. Rated-R Movies & Music lacking the"Christian atmsophere" are banned... wtf
Entertainment
Liberty University encourages students to abstain from any form of entertainment that would compromise their testimony to the world and their relationship to God.

Movies
Liberty University has always attempted to maintain a conservative standard in its approach to the arts and entertainment. Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated "R", "NC-17" or "X". The penalty for viewing such movies is a reprimandable offense. It should be remembered that in no way is Liberty University endorsing the movie industry's rating system as appropriate or Christ-honoring. In addition, the Division of Student Affairs will continue teaching guidelines and principles to students related to all forms of entertainment. This would mean that many "PG-13" and some "PG" movies, although not prohibited by policy, may also be inappropriate.

Music
Philosophy, tastes and personal convictions concerning music vary greatly among our students. Liberty University endeavors to teach discernment in evaluating and selecting all music. It is Liberty's desire to maintain a music standard that is conducive to a healthy Christian atmosphere. Students should learn to choose music that honors the Savior and is in harmony with God's word. Music which is offensive (i.e., lewd lyrics, anti-Christian messages, etc.) to Liberty's Christian stand is not permitted. This policy is implemented because:

The University desires to suggest a conservative policy for music, which honors the Lord.

Music expresses such an expansive variety of culture and background, attitude and thought, belief and message.

Some music, in its message, is clearly contrary to the standards of Liberty University.

There is a wide variance in personal styles and tastes.

Controversy surrounds some particular preferences.

-----------

These types of rules are incredibly stupid. What are we teaching students? That all of the answers to life's problems lie in Candyland and Fantasia?

43. Nice...
I have to admit, such a sanitized environment would actually be very comfortable for me... except that I'm not Christian.

I prefer modest clothes, I HATE violent/obscene/derogatory musical lyrics, I don't enjoy seeing body piercing (although I don't mind men with earrings), I prefer clean-shaven men with short hair, I avoid R/NC-17/X rated movies. I'm married, so I'd get to live off-campus anyway...

If I could fake the Christianity part, I'd probably fit right in!

Also, I think these rules make very good sense for a fundamentalist Christian university that represents a conservative viewpoint and a healthy respect for "yesterday's" positive values.

I didn't really see ANYTHING in their code that I would seriously object to.

Was there anything of that nature?

Keep in mind, there was a general attitude that sexual expression is to be VEHEMENTLY discouraged... so the only difference between gay folks and straight folks would be that the gay folks couldn't hold hands. I think a gay celibate person could go to Liberty and be fairly comfortable.

48. The men's dress code is scary! this is creepy
Standard of Dress for MEN
Hair and clothing styles related to a counterculture (as determined by the Deans' Review Committee) are not acceptable. Hair should be cut in such a way that it will not come over the ears, collar or eyebrows at any time. Ponytails for men are unacceptable. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed. Earrings and/or plugs are not permitted on or off campus, nor is body piercing. Questions concerning the standard of dress for men should be addressed to the Dean of Men's Office.

The pictures are only of black men? that's odd, while the women's dress code is of dummies??

I live in Roanoke, VA but spend a lot of time in Lynchburg doing work for clients. I have to say (and maybe it's just me) that the air is very thick. What I mean by thick is that the whole town feels like a wake. Even just driving into the outskirts of the town can give me a feeling of uneasiness. It is obvious to me that the town in controlled by Liberty. Most restaurants in the area have a hard time hiring employees because they serve alcohol. I have seen on numerous occasions students being expelled for even walking into these restaurants. Also the police enforce an unofficial curfew that is relative to the student code of Liberty. (Hmm... Lynchburg Tax dollars used for Liberty Policy enforcement.

I could go on and on, the point is that I don't like the atmosphere surrounding that University. To me something evil swirls around that school.
