There's a lot of talk on here about Jeb being groomed for a run in 2008. If Dicky Pig Valves were to resign, could * appoint Jeb as the V.P. to set him up for 2008?

I just had this thought and almost was sick.

He'd have to be confirmed by both Houses of Congress though. There is NO GUARANTEE that this would be the case, and it is wild speculation at best.

ON EDIT: When I say "wild speculation" I am referring to Richard Cheney having to leave office one way or another, as in the event of his demise, etc...

7. Likely to happen?
Why in the world do you think Dick Cheney is likely to resign? There is no reason to even have a concrete belief of this at this point.

13. Well, look at it this way.
In 2008 there will be no incumbent running. If * installs a new VP in this term, the VP is likely to be the repug frontrunner in 2008.

5. Maybe not.
See, once upon a time, John F. Kennedy appointed his brother Attorney General. The Republicans quickly made nepotism of that sort a crime. Is it still on the books?

Besides, the new AG will just write a memo advising that the Rezident has the executive authority to do it anyway.

How was Frank Murkowski able to appoint his daughter to his vacated Senate seat when he came back to run for governor of Alaska?

On edit after reading the rest of these posts -- Frank could do it because he wasn't staying in the federal government, right? Even so, it's still pretty crappy.

21. I join you in that prayer
every night. But I made my prayer a little bit open-ended (gotta give God a bit of a choice). I changed it from my original one (left to your imagination) and simply say, "God, please take Bush and Cheney far away from all power over us".

9. Yea I know--Mr. Burns
But I began to hyperventilate over the possibility of more Bushes, and what better way for that to happen than for Cheney to resign for health reasons and get Jeb in there before an election. I hope one of the previous commentators is correct that this sort of nepotism is illegal.

His work is done. The chimp is back in office and the GOP rules the roost. Time to go back home and enjoy his declining years torturing small children.

17. NO, Jeb could not be VP while Dumbya is president.
The law is, if I'm not mistaken, that the President and Vice President must be from two differant states originally. Also, I don't believe they can be members of the immediate family.

18. The law you're thinking of . . .
. . . is that an elector may not vote for both a Presidential and a Vice Presidential candidate who live in the same state as that elector. It's the 12th Amendment.

If you don't know, don't guess. Look it up.

25. I'm afraid the Anti-Nepotism Act would NOT apply:
The reason it would NOT apply is that the Vice President is NOT in a civilian position in an agency (although all cabinet members are).

    5 USC § 3110. Employment of relatives; restrictions

    (a) For the purpose of this section--
    (1) "agency" means--
    (A) an Executive agency;
    (B) an office, agency, or other establishment in the legislative branch;
    (C) an office, agency, or other establishment in the judicial branch; and
    (D) the government of the District of Columbia;
    (2) "public official" means an officer (including the President and a Member of Congress), a member of the uniformed service, an employee and any other individual, in whom is vested the authority by law, rule, or regulation, or to whom the authority has been delegated, to appoint, employ, promote, or advance individuals, or to recommend individuals for appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement, in connection with employment in an agency; and
    (3) "relative" means, with respect to a public official, an individual who is related to the public official as father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, first cousin, nephew, niece, husband, wife, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother, stepsister, half brother, or half sister.

    (b) A public official may not appoint, employ, promote, advance, or advocate for appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement, in or to a civilian position in the agency in which he is serving or over which he exercises jurisdiction or control any individual who is a relative of the public official. An individual may not be appointed, employed, promoted, or advanced in or to a civilian position in an agency if such appointment, employment, promotion, or advancement has been advocated by a public official, serving in or exercising jurisdiction or control over the agency, who is a relative of the individual.

    (c) An individual appointed, employed, promoted, or advanced in violation of this section is not entitled to pay, and money may not be paid from the Treasury as pay to an individual so appointed, employed, promoted, or advanced.

    (d) The Office of Personnel Management may prescribe regulations authorizing the temporary employment, in the event of emergencies resulting from natural disasters or similar unforeseen events or circumstances, of individuals whose employment would otherwise be prohibited by this section.

    (e) This section shall not be construed to prohibit the appointment of an individual who is a preference eligible in any case in which the passing over of that individual on a certificate of eligibles furnished under section 3317(a) of this title will result in the selection for appointment of an individual who is not a preference eligible.

The laws barring such activity would be meaningless during a second shrub term. What Georgie wants Georgie gets. Strategically, it's another stroke of evil genius. I wouldn't be surprised if KKKarl thought of it a year ago!

There are at least 3 republican Senators who see themselves as candidates in '08, and at least one of those will work hard to block him. I don't believe they'll even try this.

That said, I've always believed that one of Cheney's roles was that of 'placeholder' for Jeb. Cheney's health is too iffy for him to run for President. But with him on the ticket, it insures that there is no sitting VP opposing Jeb for the nomination.

There's going to be a certain amount of resistance, not only in the country as a whole, but even within the republican party, to a Bush dynasty. And that resistance will increase if it appears that Jeb has been 'handed' the position, if he's 'inherited' it. The best way for Jeb to overcome that will be to campaign hard for the republican nomination, to show people that he's 'earned' it on his own. I truely believe that Sen. Frist's candidacy is that of a stalking horse for Jeb. Someone for him to run against, but who will make sure that Jeb wins. The fact that Karl Rove has already agreed to work for Frist only confirms this in my mind. If Jeb is seen beating a Karl Rove managed candidate in the primaries, it will give Jeb an aura of invincibility going into the general election. Especially since a "humbled" Karl Rove will have joined his staff after the primaries.
