Khephra's Cause of Death
The preliminary results are that it was a blood clot that traveled from his leg to his heart.

Toxicolocy may take weeks before they will issue a death certificate.

I know this looks strange that his name comes up, but maybe after the funeral someone can help me figure this out and I can sign on as Mamma Khephra.

Also there are so many different recorders in this room that I don't know what goes where. I was able to hear Mike Malloy, but just barely. I couldn't tell which machine was controlling the sound and had to put my ear to the speaker to hear it.

Someone offered to download it and bring it to the funeral, I would greatly appreciate that, as well as the memory board.

Sitting here the last three nights reading how valued my precious son was far and wide in this world has helped me tremendously. My son was and is in great company.

I know Scott is around me...I was sitting in the living room and without anyone near the remote control, the television suddently came on ... the SciFi channel. Scott wanted me to know he was with me.

12. That's so amazing about the TV
but I have heard that many, many times. My mom doesn't believe in life after death but shortly after my dad died the TV came on by itself at the exact time when he used to wake her up every morning. And I have heard many other stories, often around electricity-- lamps and TVs in particular-- it sees to be a way they can contact us.

I'm glad that you know that he's near and that you are finding some solace in the messages of so many people who loved Scott. Please take care of yourself-- we are all thinking of you and sending you thoughts of love and peace.

71. I've had this experience.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 12:05 AM by jdj
I am agnostic, but I've continued to have this experience with a pet that passed on in 01.

And I continue to be graced by the presence of a great blue heron on days when I feel the weight of the world. This herons in particular have shown up on hard days in my life after his death.

I always used to see one at a lake I went to with my pets all the time. Then I moved and the neighbors have a pond, and out pops this heron all the time, I seem to see a great blue heron every new years day, and everytime my spirit feels heavy and burdened.

Sometimes it scares me because most of the time I don't believe in this stuff.

Thanks for sharing Momma Keph, you will be in my thoughts and prayers. When I shared about the heron and my sightings of black bears someone told me that these animals are totems of strength.

127. My physicist friend says that energy
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 11:05 PM by Lorien
can't be destroyed, including the energy that is our life force, or "soul". He believes that the dead are able to communicate through lights, radio, and TV by manipulating energy. He rarely posts on DU (under the user name ldb). If I can I'll ask him to post his insights into this phenomenon.

Wishing you peace and comfort, Mamma Kheph.

But the latest breaking news forum which he constantly posted to was the main reason I lurked at DU for so many years.

From what I've read, he sounds like the kind of news junkie that would put me to shame, and I salute him for that.

He was an incredibly valued member of this community, and I don't know who will be able to stand in his shoes. I'm very sorry about your loss.

Transcription of Mike Malloy:

..I would like to just pause for a second and say something about a guy named Scott Lowery who posted at Democratic Underground under the name Khephra.

Cathy and I met him at the first anti war march, anti Iraq war march a couple of years ago in Washington, D.C. That was when we first met Will Rivers Pitt, and a lot of other folks who are Democratic Underground supporters, posters, stalwarts, members of that community.

We met Khephra just that one time, and we liked him enormously. And on Saturday, he was found at his computer terminal at his desk dead. There' s no official cause of death. It's my understanding there is going to be an autopsy, but he was a good guy. He was an American; he was a patriot; he was a Howard Dean supporter, and unless you were a regular (at) Democratic Underground, his name really doesn't mean anything, and I apologize for asking people who don't know who I'm talking about to take just this brief minute to listen to me go on about this guy.

I didn't know him that well, but I just knew that he was a man of deep political conviction and compassion and understanding, and Cathy and I liked him. That's all I have to say about that.

Cathy just said in my headphones that he contributed quite a bit to the program. He sent stuff in to Cathy that we used, Cathy used, so that's all.

and we don't have a lot of say in when that is. You miss your son. But what we feel in this world after we lose someone are our earthly feelings. They are really feelings for ourself and our loss rather than for the one that has left us. Rejoice and be happy for Scott because he is with God and happier than we can possibly imagine. Scott was a good man and you have every reason to be overjoyed for him right now. After all, going to where Scott is at right now is really what this whole thing is about.

.....let me say that this news of the diagnosis serves as a reminder to those of us who are in our chairs for many hours of the day to get up and stretch at least hourly. Sitting for long periods of time can allow the blood to pool in the lower extremities. A clot could happen to any of us.

I knew Khephra only through his posts here, but I read enough to get the sense he was a good person. Good children come from good parents.

You did well, you raised a good man.

You have my deepest sympathy. He will be missed deeply here at DU and everywhere else as well, of that I'm sure.

58. Even those of us who weren't here from the beginning and didn't know him
well knew of him well enough to be shocked to learn of his death. He was a large, compelling presence here. I can't think of a single exchange I ever had with him, I'm very sorry to say, though I did read his posts. But I was aware of him from the very beginning, pleased to know that he, like me, was a supporter of Howard Dean, and very sad to learn of his sudden passing. I'm so glad you can take comfort from the outpouring of genuine feeling for him here.

his presence here was (and is) one of the greatest integrity.
We have been truly blessed to have had his sincere and focused input.
He was obviously genuinely committed to educating and raising awareness with his consistently informative posts. His presence here was a very positive one and I always thought he helped raise the general quality of discourse in these forums. He is sorely missed.

64. Sitting for long periods compresses the femoral artery
causing blood to become sluggish on return flow to the heart...if Keph had bumped his leg and had a bruise, this might have caused that to occur.

Perhaps this should serve as a warning to all of us that are at a deak for long hours.

66. Thanks for the update Mamma Kephra
Scott is around us all. We will never forget him. You take your time to grieve his loss. We all miss him. I'd like to take comfort in the fact that we're all like family here. Please do keep posting here and we'll do our best to keep you company and make you feel loved.

The first time Kephra and I exchanged mail it was over Babylon 5. Anyway I finally realized that losing Kephra on this board was like loosing Kosh (a major character) on B5. Kosh had always been there on B5 and Kephra had always been here too. He was one of the first ones, and I mean that in a very good sense. The Ancient/first ones are the leaders that showed the newer races how to live. Scott taught us all a lot even if it was just virtually through our web board here.

My Dad died of exactly what you describe Scott died of. He was in the hospital at the time after coming out of knee surgery. Two days later a blood clot from his knee traveled to his heart and stopped his heart. And they still couldn't save him. It was all very unexpected. These blood clots are very serious. Luckily my Mom was at the hospital at the time and he was with her. She took a lot of comfort in that he was not alone.

Love and big hugs to you Mamma K.

Sonia

80. "blood clot traveled from leg to heart" - can happen to anyone
just sitting down for long periods of time can cause blood to clot in the legs, due to gravity and lack of movement of the legs.
(sitting down for long periods of time is one of those things that 'internet junkies' do.)

it is a known problem in the passenger flight industry.
(media compliance to commercial interests is the reason why we don't hear much about it.)

older age increases the chance of this happening.

taking in fluids regularly and getting up to walk around for a bit at least once an hour can help prevent this.

strength to you mama Khephra.

I enjoyed Scott's company here so much. I always read his posts and we talked frequently about whatever gothica we were into. His intelligence and his warmth and uniqueness came through quite clearly to me. Like others, I wish we would have gotten the chance to meet in person at a DU gathering.

Thanks for telling us about the cause of death. It's so hard when it's a young person. Scott had his whole life ahead of him.

Please take care of yourself, Mamma Kheph. I'll be thinking about you.

and everytime I go to Democratic Underground, I will always think about him.

When a close friend of mine died, his favorite picture, a picture that had always hung on the wall, fell, and the wire on one side was unraveled. The next day the picture fell and the wire was unraveled off the other side.

There will be a comforting presence with you.

99. I didn't know Scott
Since DU is my news source, I don't pay much attention to screen names -- unless I get into a dust-up with them. (And I do have a temper, so that does happen occasionally.) Never got into a dust-up with Scott, and from the sounds of things no one else did either.

He was apparently a mainstay of the LBN forum, meaning I have him to thank for keeping better informed than almost anyone I know. We are a community here, and we all impact each other's lives, more so than we realize, I guess.

112. Did you ever read the threads with Scott before this time?
I know I call members of my family to read some important piece of information posted (often from Scott).

Sonias posted her Dad had knee surgery, then had a clot cause a heart attack. Same thing happened with a good friend.

Since this is what we do here at DU, and I don't know if you will be back again, I hope it wouldn't be too inappropriate to mention there are some side affects (blood clots, strokes) with drugs like Vioxx or Betrex. If you know of any medication he had taken, you may want to look into it, as manufacturers of these drugs are being forced to take responsibility.

This site lists different drugs, and lawsuits. I found it very informative when I was taking Vioxx.

http://www.class-action-lawsuits.com/heart.html

If you know he was taking something like this, do not throw out the prescription bottles, it may be your only proof.

I know this is a difficult time for you, but I wanted to mention this because sometimes, we don't know what we might need to hang on to for information. Since you mentioned the Toxicology report taking weeks, the prescription bottles may help.

You will be in our thoughts.

122. I miss Khephra every day
He didn't know me from adam - I was just one of tens of thousands of DU posters he was nice to, helped along, provided with an enormous amount of information.

I was one of the tens of thousands who counted on Khefra every day. Latest Breaking News isn't the same - despite the concerted efforts of many DU volunteers who are doing their best to fill the huge gap.

Hugs to you Mamma Khephra.

123. You have our deepest sympathies.
This has been quite a shock for everyone here but you must be reeling.

While I miss Kef I, we, wish you the best in this difficult time as well as in the furure.

124. Thank you so much, Mrs. K.
I did not know your son well, if at all, but on behalf of my fellow DUers, we as a community will always be here for you.

128. Thank you for keeping us updated, Mama Keph.
I remember reading many of Keph's posts when I first came here in 2001. He really was the spirit of LBN.

You are in my thoughts.

129. Thanks so much for the update
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Less than a week after my dad died, I woke up from a nap one day and could feel him hugging me. I know that sounds strange, but his arms were around me. That is how he used to wake me up when I was little; he would hug me and whisper in my ear that it was time to get up. I could also smell him. That was five years ago and I remember it as clearly as if it happened this afternoon.

My dad was also a very organized person and I am just the opposite. He was always trying to help me learn how to be more organized and to stop misplacing things. SInce he died, every time I lose anything, I ask my dad to help me find it and he always does.

So I know our loved ones stay with us after they are gone.

I probably wouldn't be able to post online in such an event, so I admire the fact that you can. Hope he can continue to show his presence.

133. A hug for you, Mamma Khephra
Thank you for keeping us updated in your time of grief. I'm not at all surprised that Scott found a way to communicate with you to let you know that his spirit is strong and he's okay.

I'm happy that you are considering joining the DU family and look forward to Mamma Khephra's posts. As you already know, there are warm and loving people who post here, and you can find comforting words at any time.

I plan to burn a pyramid-shaped candle tonight in Scott's honor.

139. Wow! And thank you.
I know that many of us on this board were hoping to hear what actually happened to Khephra, since it was so unexpected and such a loss, so thank you so much for posting this. You are truly amazing.O8)

I'm sure that anyone of us would be more than pleased to walk you through the process of registering on DU. It's not difficult, though, since I managed to do it, and you already figured the tough stuff out, when you were under incredible pressure.:-)

I have no doubt that Scott is still with you, and still with us on DU. I went through much the same thing with my Dad. I just thank you so much for sharing with us, since I know that it means so much to so many, and it would have been much easier for you to retreat into your own private place. Scott will always be a member of DU, since his ideas and his many threads will live on. And we have gained a new member. But he will always be missed, with his vigilance with the news and his intelligent fresh take on what's going on and what's important to all of us. But, again, I know that I am one of so many who are grateful to you for sharing his legacy with us. We miss you, Scott.;(
