strange segue in Bush speech |
|
Dubya gave a "No Child Left Behind" speech today at my old high school. During the speech he mentioned one of the teachers there and somehow sequed from that into a mention of how he drank a lot in college which then sequed....well, you can read it yourself:
"I talked to Stuart Singer. He's a math teacher here. You may have heard of him. (Applause.) He's only been here 32 years. (Laughter.) (SNIP). Stuart, by the way -- you're not going to believe this -- falls in the incredibly small world category. He graduated from SMU in Dallas the same year that Laura graduated from SMU in Dallas. (Applause.) I asked him if they ever went to the bar together. (Laughter.) Both of them said, no, they were in the library. (Laughter and applause.) It probably distinguishes their college career from mine. (Laughter and applause.)
One of the things we must be willing to always do is raise the bar. We've got to continue to raise the bar in our high schools. And one of the best ways to do so is by promoting advanced placement and the international baccalaureate programs. At Stuart High, you've got a fantastic IB program. It really means that you're willing to challenge every student. That's what it says. It just says, we're not going to be -- we just simply will not accept the status quo, that we're going to try to bring innovative programs to this school to continue to raise the bar, to challenge students as best as we possibly can."

6. Does he want to "raise the bar" at the high schools so they can |
|
drink too much like he did? He says the "bar" word a lot in this portion of the speech.

10. Besides the "bar" thing, is your school really Stuart High? It seems |
|
like he is still hung up on the teacher's name (Stuart Singer) at that part. If it is Stuart High, that's just a little weird then.

11. Its J.E.B. Stuart High School |
|
Named for the Confederate Civil War general. When my brother attended the school nearly forty years ago (he was in the first or second graduating class), it was locally referred to as "JEB". By the time I graduated around 30 years ago, it was more frequently referred to as JEB Stuart. Nowadays, its just "Stuart" and instead of a rebel general on horseback, the school logo is a stylized "S" --for all anyone can tell, the school might be named for some obscure Scotsman.
And I remember Stuart Singer when he was the cool, young math teacher that coached the tennis team!

with that Canadian guy's asisstant named Scotty last year. The one where bush* said "I've got a Scotty (as in McClellan not his dog) and your Scotty is prettier than mine" (quote not EXACT but gist is solid)

Assumptions: * is an idiot who cannot string one multisyllabic word in a row. He is wired for speeches. His speeches are pre-written. So why does he always sound like an idiot, leaving us scratching our heads and saying "huh"?
