"Tone Down the Inauguration" "fashion flackery has begun in earnest"
The Denver Post is frowning on the egregious excess of George&Co's second inaugural round of festivities. I know the Bushies and friends paid their money and expect a glorious week of heady festivities as a partial reward much like a designer bag filled with extravagant goodies before more substantial recompense appears, but the "let them eat cake" attitude is not being totally missed by large segments of the American public.

Hubris is not a true friend.

...

"The planned glitz and glamour of the three-day affair already has an air of being overdone, if not outdated, when contrasted with the American servicemembers who are in harm's way on the streets of Iraq and in the hills of Afghanistan.

And with the Indian Ocean still churning up bodies from last month's devastating tsunami, ice sculptures and black tie dinner dances seem slightly off chord.

The website of the Presidential Inaugural Committee says inaugurations "set the tone for a new administration and reflect a president's personality." What do the organizers want us to see about President Bush in next week's $40 million celebration?

...

That said, we would have favored a toned-down inaugural even before the tsunami hit. Not only is it Bush's second inauguration - even Bill Clinton scaled back his second one - but Americans also are in danger in foreign lands. Certainly the inaugural programmers will sketch in the requisite salutes to the armed forces, and those who have sacrificed their very lives for this country, but we would have preferred something modest, such as what President Franklin Roosevelt had during wartime: a short speech at the White House and a nice luncheon.

Instead, the fashion flackery has begun in earnest. We hear that First Lady Laura Bush will don an "ice blue and silver embroidered tulle V-neck dress with a matching duchess satin coat by Seventh Avenue designer Oscar de la Renta" for the inaugural balls."

3. Lots of answers to this
'The website of the Presidential Inaugural Committee says inaugurations "set the tone for a new administration and reflect a president's personality." What do the organizers want us to see about President Bush in next week's $40 million celebration?'

The tone: We're gonna waste as much money as we possibly can before we have to leave.

The personality: Party boy.

Would we actually expect anything else from these people?

10. That dress will look so good when Bushie rips it off
under the new gilt crown and blue velvet canopy they have installed over the Lincoln bed. Oh, god a presidential bodice ripper. Methinks Laura will be forced to "put out."

I hear Oscar made Laura's frock out of Ashcroft's old blue drapes, the ones that he covered all the Justice Dept's nude statues with. Hot stuff.

11. New Protest Site
Now that it looks like George Bush is definitely going to be inaugurated it's time to dig in for the next four years. We are quickly putting up a website to help with coordinating and getting the word out on Inaugural protests (only 8 days to go). The site's aim is to be bipartisan (I know this is a liberal forum, please be patient with us. There really are many people from all walks of life who are against Bush so we are going to try to be as all inclusive as possible) and is geared toward the first time protester. We are attempting to list all the major(peaceful) anti-bush protests so that first time protesters have a place to begin their research and join in. The major problem now is almost all hotels in the DC area are booked, if you have any housing links to forward please to do so. Pardon the appearance of our site we are trying to get it up as quickly as possible before the inaugural, we are still waiting for the revised design and new template. Like most people we were shocked by Bush's reelection and this is being done on the fly. More content is also on the way. Webmasters out there feel free to link to us and send us an email that describes your site and we will try to reciprocate. Whether you link to us or not, it might be a good idea to start a few threads on DU on the counter inaugural to give people a heads up as to what is going on and channel some of the lingering frustration on this board. The biggest problems right now are finding a place to stay and many people in many states are having a problem with transportation. Post those housing links and organize car pools in you local areas to get people to DC. Good luck and lets show the world how most of America really feels.

DCprotests.com is going to remain up after the inaugural for possible future protests and to put up pictures in case the protests are ignored by the media.

We may be changing hosting services so if you cant find us at dcprotests.com try dcprotests.net
