2. I've stopped thinking of SUV owners as evil. |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 02:36 PM by Vash the Stampede
Mostly because when faced of the choice of family appropriate vehicles, I would have to pick an SUV over a minivan. I can't bring myself to do that.
Note: Hummers, Escalades, and outrageous sized SUVs need not apply.

Wonderful 4WD from Subaru..can climb solid ice! Big enough to load up kids and groceries and it's not a gas guzzling pig.

While they're made in Indiana (and GM owns 20% of Subaru) they are not union-made. I own an Outback and it is a very good, reliable car. Note that Ford is now making an Outback-type vehicle called the Freestyle. It may be worth checking out....

Always hated SUVs - didn't understand that the ones that ride on a car chassis, like the Escape, can get really good mileage. And they're nice for us big/tall folks, relatively guilt-free
I'm hoping that by the time I'm in the market for a new vehicle, that I'll be able to afford and Escapge hybrid, and they'll have worked any kinks out of the process

I drive a Ford Ranger out of self defense around here. Driving out west is a scary experience in a car, sharing the road with full size king cab pickup trucks on oversized tires, momvans, and monster SUVs. My old Ranger with its heavy duty steel bumpers makes me think I have a fighting chance. At least I can see where I'm going in it.
Trust me, if the roads weren't choked with these monsters, I'd have considered a little Japanese econobox hatchback instead, although I do use the Ranger to haul firewood and building materials from time to time.
I don't dismiss SUV owners as evil or even misguided. I just know that around here, they only want to see where they're going.

I beg to differ. I drive a car and just zip right around those lumbering SUVs. Well, while obeying all traffic laws of course :)
(No seriously, with this graduated licence thing I hardly have any points on my license, I can't speed.)

I drive an SUV and quite honestly I drive like a granny eventhough I'm in my thirties. I've never been in an accident except being rear-ended by a pick-up truck when I owned a Volvo about a decade ago. I was sitting at a stoplight and bam, the guy hit me going about 45 miles per hour. It did 6 grand in damage to my car and messed up my back. He was telling a story to the passenger in his truck and not paying attention to the road. Thankfully I looked in the rearview mirror just before he hit me and instinctively depressed my brake. It kept me from going into cross traffic, to this day I believe that little glance up saved my life.

there is something special about having a Suburban Assault Vehicle 3 feet behind you at 60mph, incidentally I include P/ups in that category. Honda drivers don't last long doing that kind of stuff. Driving a Volvo probably had a great deal to do with keeping you alive , too.

I never voluntarily let an SUV in front of me. The idea that their illusion of safety trumps my very real increase of danger is disgusting.

I've owned my SUV for several years, I love it and don't feel a need to explain why I own it. I do have my reasons and they are mine. I do wish others would just live and let live. Personal choices are just that! Whether it's an SUV, McMansion Supersized or the decision to send ones child to private school, it's a personal choice.

I was like you...I said that there was no way I would ever drive a minivan. We ended up getting one for my wife and I love it. It is easy to get the kids in and out and handles like a car. Plus, it is easy to park. We have a smaller minivan -- a 1997 Honda Odyssey.

9. when i was making my commute thru the suburbs of nashville |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 02:45 PM by nashville_brook
it was a great commute -- reverse for the most part. it's a lawless land of mcmansions out to franklin on south on 65. if you do it right you can make a 35 minute drive -- 20 or less. lots of big curves and interesting cabers.
anyhow...
it would *make my day* to see someone on the commute with a good bumpersticker. extra points if they get in your groove and follow you at high speeds thru the straight-aways.
this is the land of SUVs and i see the occasional message. it's amazing how good that feels on your commute to your miserable little cube and narcissistic boss.
think about it. that's the time of day when you are most vulnerable, preparing for your day. it's just you and the road and machine and the other machines. a bumper sticker is a powerful message under those circumstances. especially before coffee, we were wide open emotionally. :)
if any of ya'll don't sport a b-sticker -- go get one. it's the least you could do for the rest of us!

that said "Show W the Door in '04!" and noseholders on a chain for our noses during Bush's comments. We played Debate Bingo and made Bingo when * repeated himself repeatedly! It was great!
My other friends had a lifesize Monopoly board game on their front lawn. We rolled with huge foam dice and could buy what we landed on. I owned Condi, Rumsfeld, Powell and Enron! For that matter, I won! LOL
I won't let my spouse toss out my Kerry/Edwards lawn sign either! At least I had fun during the election...
