Company's CEO on Offensive Against Critics

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Jan. 13) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. chief executive Lee Scott led a media charge Thursday to counter criticism that the world's largest retailer is a behemoth that takes advantage of its workers and stifles competition.

Scott said he wants Wal-Mart workers to know the company was speaking up for them and he wants Wal-Mart to have a better handle on how it is perceived among members of the public.

The company bought full-page ads in more than 100 newspapers around the nation to highlight its message that it provides opportunity for advancement and that its stores provide mainly full-time jobs that come with a broad benefits package.

''We want to get those myths off the table, set the record straight,'' Scott said in a phone interview. He was in New York City for a round of media interviews.

1. You seriously can't cut and paste from AOL?
That's messed up. Anyway, AOL is a fascist enabler like the rest of the media so I'm not surprised at their cute little stories over there.

2. "Urban Legend" = Tin-Foil Hat Lite
A polite dismissive intended to shut down further investigation.

It would behoove us to pay attention to so-called "urban legends."

3. RevCheesehead, I think that we should pay attention.
they're trying to rewrite history. "that never happened" is what "urban legend" means. Buzz word for the reepers... soon it's gonna be that Iraq was an urban legend...

4. I think it's the Rupert Murdoch School of Journalism and Ethics.
Items which demean the extravagent Republican lifestyle at the expense of the poor = "urban legend."
Urban, of course, means blacks and other minorities.
Legend, implying indirectly that there is exaggeration at work over the basic assumption.

Items which are potentially damaging to the Republican Party or its leaders = "tin-foil-hat."
Pay no attention to the lunatic in the room. S/He hears voices which aren't there.

Any other items which Republicans find offensive = condescending dismissal, such as "Some people say...." or "While it has been said...", immediately to be followed with the corporate spin of the day.

In time of emergency, haul out the American Flag and question the opposition's patriotism, intelligence, and morality.
