I got some dirty looks...
...during a recent "Pledge of Allegiance."

When it got to the "...one nation, under God..." section, I recited the phrase "...one nation, under the Constitution..." instead and caught a couple of sideways glances from those around me.

Oh, well. I guess that's not as patriotic as some McCarthy-ite, red-baiting insertion to those quasi-patriots, but it seems much more appropriate and unifying to me.

C'est la vie.

1. The most disturbing pledge I ever witnessed
Was just after the last round of pledge law suits. I forget where it was but we were all asked to rise for the pledge. When it came to the notorious phrase a large number of people screwed up their faces in anger and shouted "UNDERGOD!!!"

the pledge of allegiance, but I will definitely use your words to replace "under god."

9. "Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles"
I guess that's two nations. Maybe the Germans were different.

10. pledge anality
I've heard a scout leader, on more than one occasion, insist on pointing out before the reciting of the pledge: "And remember, do not pause between 'one nation' and 'under God'!"

But everybody always does anyway! :+

11. My father was a scout leader and did the same thing! n/t
But in case you get the wrong impression, my father is not some awful brainwashed neo-con. He is a respectable Christian who thinks for himself and one of my idols.

13. It's how we were taught in Catholic school...
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 07:13 PM by mcscajun
...there was always a pause before "under God" -- and we bowed our heads while we said it!

Of course...I'm much better now. :) I'm a collapsed Catholic and total secularist. I wouldn't even 'sign' the phrase "under God" when I was learning the pledge in American Sign Language a few years ago. The best part of that is that I was then asked in the class why I wouldn't. I got to tell them about the history of the pledge, and that I'd only recite (or sign) the original.

14. The obvious question . . .
Aren't ALL nations "under God"? What's the point of saying it (or worse, forcing others to say it), other than to make a public parade of your pious beliefs? Jesus had some pretty hard things to say about folks who did that, as I recall.

12. Speaking of God...
There is a house nearby with a sign on the lawn that says "God Bless America" with a flag scroll underneath.

I was trying to think what would be the best sign to put up if I lived across the street from them and had to look at it every day.

I decided on "God Bless Separation of Church and State."

It would make a good bumper sticker too.

17. One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
That sure as hell don't describe THIS country, so they may as well corrupt it any way they want.
