2. Not NASCAR, but Willy T Ribbs ran the Indy 500
... and some of the sportscar series races in the early 80's ...

and a couple years back, Bill Cosby was part owner of a car that didn't qualify for the 500. Not sure who the driver was.

3. Yes, NASCAR....
Look up Wendell Scott. Richard Pryor made a movie based on his life story about twenty years ago.

Cheers.

21. You might want to check out the movie...
... if it's on TV or on video. Called "Greased Lightning," made in the late `70s, early `80s, maybe. It's a good cast and a so-so script. Even Richie Havens has a bit part in it as one of Scott's mechanics.

Cheers.

10. Not at all....
I knew Wendell and it blew my mind I could not think of his name after all these years -- he was a super nice guy... very humble )of course the time called for it)....

20. Wendell Scott actually won a NASCAR race
but the NASCAR folks refused to give him the trophy. After the race track had emptied they gave him the prize money but they wouldn't publicly acknowledge that he was the winner.

Edited on Fri Jan-14-05 11:40 AM by ohio_liberal
drove in the NASCAR Craftsman truck series also.

Edited to add:

Ribbs is the first African American in the modern era to compete full time in a major NASCAR division.

22. Bill Lester
Is a former sports car racer who is now in the Craftsman Truck Series. There is also a very talented young man coming through the ranks who was just signed to a development contract with Hendrick Motorsports (think Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson). I can't pull his name off the top of my head right this minute but he's about 15 years old and his dad owns his late model dirt race team.

18. Willy Ribbs tried his hand at NASCAR in the mid-eighties
He was a very good roadtrack driver but couldn't quite get the stock cars to go fast enough to qualify for a race. I suspect his heart just wasn't in oval tracks.

13. Seems to me, a black man in the South driving a fast car with
a lot of white men driving fast cars chasing after him usually has nothing to do with organized auto racing and more like trying to avoid a neck stretching . . .

I think Magic Johnson serves on NASCAR's efforts to make racing more minority friendly
