18. Hi, Shopaholic
I read last night's thread today at work and noticed you were at the Jackie Kennedy exhibit in DC. I was fortunate enough to see it a few years ago as well on a visit. My daughter went to American U and then lived there until a month ago. The exhibit was fabulous.

34. It was just amazing.
The day we went we had the first tickets of the day and it was pouring down rain (on a Sunday morning) and for the first hour, we had the place to ourselves. It was heaven. We got to spend as much time as we wanted viewing the exhibit. Then we got to have the oh-so-fab Sunday brunch (with soul gospel) music that the museum has every Sunday. A great memory for my Mom & me, for sure.

Nice ties, not terribly expensive. They also do gift-boxes with messages. Be sure to have the address handy.

Perhaps he could "win" a tie on the next quiz! With, of course, the attached gift card that says "with love from the gals of the Keith Olbermann Estrogen Brigade on DemocraticUnderground."

281. Which suits/shirts does he have
that would look good with dark teal? I don't remember his clothes as well as you do. Seems like he as a suit that is either black or nearly so and he has at least one shirt that is white, but I really wish he wouldn't wear it with the black suit as the black/white contrast against his skin makes him look sort of washed out.

I haven't seen him wear such a shirt. He looked the best in the purplish shirt with the print purple tie on Wednesday night. It was fabulous.
Really this is just not a job for a Virgo, we are way too picky about things like this. If KO would only just post and tell us what shirts he has it would be so helpful, and whether or not he hates paisley.

I *adore* paisley -- have been known to wear 100% polyester shirts (ick) just because they're vintage cool and WACKO paisely -- but I don't think I've ever seen him wear it.

318. He's 6'4" and long in the torso (has an extra vertebrae, of all things)
I'm thinking the extra length would probably be a good thing, but I'm not 100% sure. Maybe one of the men's clothing websites has guidelines on this; if so, I'd fudge his height up to 6'6" because of the torso length. We don't want the tie to look like a Cub Scout scarf.

327. get a backache, apparently
There was an article in Salon.com yonks ago, called "Mea culpa" where KO talked about his days at ESPN and basically apologized for acting like a jerk. Google it, it's worth a read; shows that our boy is capable of some insight and personal growth.

Anyway, in the opening lines of this essay, he mentions visiting a chiropractor for lower back pain and learning that he actually has an extra vertebrae. That factoid stuck in my head because my daughter has a long torso and it's a pain finding clothing, car seats, etc. that fit properly because she's not proportioned the way manufacturers think she should be, which makes me wonder how many vertebrae *she* has. Based on my experiences with her, I'm thinking we need to fudge his height up a little to compensate for "normal" versus actual.

Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 12:20 AM by gkhouston
did you think more or less highly of him than you did before?

He made mistakes. He figured it out. Too late to repair most of the damage, but he figured it out. Then he apologized, quite publicly. Some folks thought it was some sort of publicity stunt but I think it was a genuine act of contrition. That took guts, more than a lot of people have.

I'm hoping he gleaned enough insight from the whole gut-wrenching cycle that he doesn't repeat the past with Countdown. So far, everything seems to be working and he seems happy. Maybe he's finally figured out his needs and abilities and limits and put himself in a situation where those things are balanced. I've got my fingers crossed.

344. I didn't think more OR less of him after reading it
I just had a little more insight, and like you, I hope he doesn't burn out at Countdown. I guess we shouldn't all complain when he takes a vacation or doesn't update the blog for a bit.

It was painful in the way that watching any uncomfortable situation unfold around anyone you care about - either that you know in person or at a distance - is painful.

It's unsettling to hear someone at that level of success talk about feeling like they are secretly not as competent as everyone assumes, and they are worried about being found out. That's one of those things people don't talk about - even though I suspect a huge percentage of people feel that way off and on. It's unsettling to know, well, that your level of success is possibly never going to be enough to get that feeling to go away. It's at once both encouraging (knowing the feeling is just human nature, not tied to achievements) and discouraging.

347. actually, it wouldn't surprise me
if a lot of "successful" people are driven by private insecurities. Learning to value yourself for what you are, and not for what you can do, is a toughie. If I ever crack that nut, I'll post some tips on how it's done. :-)

especially with successful people. Thanks for posting the article. I definitely like him more after reading it, even though I was totally unaware of him and any of his broadcasts before this election. It is tremendously difficult to be self-aware about mistakes and admit them in so public a way, lots of people never do it, even in private.

This guy KO deserves .....
:loveya: :loveya: :loveya: and of course, a tie from us.

Alas, Virgo's can be persnickity, yet oh so tasteful.
I still wish we could go Ferragamo on that man. Patsy suggested Hermes, even better.

293. I like paisley, but for him I would have guessed
a geometric print. Don't know why. I don't recall seeing any gray shirts, hence my question. I doubt we'll learn anything from him, unless he happens to wear a gray shirt one day next week. If we encounter the perfect shirt while tie-shopping we could give him a heads up on the shirt style/color and tell him we didn't make that purchase because we couldn't be sure of a proper fit, but we really think it would be a good match for the tie. How would that be for a compromise?

You do it Shopaholic. I like the pinky one you showed us earlier, I didn't notice if it had warm or cool little spotties on it though. If they are gray spotties it will look boss with a greyish shirt and the charcoal suit he wore tonight. Yum.

Nice, that IS his color. Sort of, it's hard to tell. (the color of the tie, that is, on the web.)

But we should pick a distinctive design so we'd be able to tell if he wore it. :)

This one's sort of his style, eh?

And, yes, I missed our meeting again.

I'm still working on my bathroom.

However, the plumber was impressed that I get e-mails from Keith Olbermann. He also got treated to two days of Olbermann doing news - says he likes him zillions more than anything else that's on and thanked me for exposing him to 'News Keef' (as opposed to SportsCenter Keef... da, da, da... da, da, da.)

:)

I promise I'll be better next week. The bathroom is finished.

That is - until next month when I have him back over to raise the toilet in the other bathroom to change the seal whilst I lay the tile (gotta love me in the winter - I'm all about redoing my house - and I still have a ceiling and some cabinets to paint!)

Edited to add these!

Go to photobucket.com and register for a free account. "Borrow" some KO pics from the web and put them there, then it gives you a www.address for each pic you can link to, you come here, post the link, and voila, it magically appears! Or just wait for one of us to post a delicious picture of Mr. Olbermann (which is much easier)!

I know no one will probably see this, but I needed to test it out. I had trouble getting anything from images.google.com to work. I'd put it in photobucket and it would tell me it was an invalid file. Somehow the URL with the photo didn't work out. So, I saved the file to the hard drive here at home to test it out. Let's see what happens. If this doesn't work, I'll keep trying the URL thing or ask someone on Monday how to do it.

I think I got the URL now, but I still had to save the photo to my computer first. I hadn't scrolled down far enough on the screen in Photobucket.

99. Not surprising. In Wednesday's thread,
I noted that I would be at a boring church meeting. Therefore, Keith did not have the incentive he needed to be snarky or extra-dashing. And the fact that he is wearing a Duke Blue tie is something meant exclusively for me.

Hi, Keith! :hi: :loveya:

I can't even imagine what it was like there that day. I was born in New York and we lived in Bayside for a few years in the late 70s and still have friends and family there.

I haven't heard any 9/11 jokes and think they must be very insensitive. It really pisses me off that Bush has used it as an excuse for everything on his agenda. He's always playing the 9/11 card.

103. Ah, I knew he'd have to do the "career guidance" story about strippers
There's a local TV station here that runs an expose about teenage strippers every time we have sweeps month. You can bank on it. Shocking! There are 17 year olds stripping in local clubs!! They've run variations on this theme so often that my best friend calls the story "Teenage Titty Time"...

On the Clark blog, when it gets a bit outta hand, we use this:

This is Gert Clark's rolling pin. She's comfortable enough in her fabulous marriage to understand we think that her hubby is hot (and she's a babe, too, I might add), HOWEVER, when we get too  - out pops the rolling pin.

So OUCH!!

We've been forewarned.

(LOL - I even created a GertsRollingPin user name once on the Clark blog to calm the savages! :) )

Powell is after him, they keep making a point of saying a bipartisan group of congressmen are investigating.

I smell a deliberate Rove effort to distance him from the administration. "We have no idea how this could have happened, we are appalled, we don't even know who he is. And his shoes are ugly."

There's no way Powell is after him because he's concerned about ethics.

My favorite part of the Friday show.

Time to Plaaayyyyy:

What Have We Learned!!!

on edit: I love his comment about what would happen to the Dennis Miller doll..."That it would just destroy itself!"

And also his explanation about why he killed the Ann Coulter doll...

Sigh...:loveya: KO

We ought to be sending in questions for the quiz that emphasize the stuff we want emphasized. The blackwell question was like a little light bulb there for me - that's our chance to draw attention to stories other people might have missed that we want them to know about.

You guys are probably all doing that already and I'm the slow one, I know ... but what the heck, there could be one person slower than me lurking here.

246. no it's a Seinfeld reference. Elaine said the guys she dated that were
cute enough to sleep with were'spongeworthy' for the particular type of birth control she used. She had a closet of them, and they were not being manufactured anymore so she had to be very careful who she used them on, so as not to waste one on a clinker. Is this too detailed an explanation?

both depressing. Now, you have less money, but larger closets, and you don't have to date losers. Sounds like a win to me.

One of the things that really caught my eye about the house I live in is the amount of closet space. It's almost impossible to have too much. Even when you aren't trying to store sponges!

270. So is O'Reilly really going to be on that tsunami telethon?
I heard that he was actually going to go through with it and I was trying to imagine what he'd do with his screen time... bleeurgh.

I put an acrylic screen in front of the TV a couple of years ago to protect it from accidental collisions with my daughter and her possessions. It never occurred to me that *adults* might be throwing objects in the vicinity of the television... but you know, the carpet in the family room is already in pretty bad shape, so a couple of tomatoes couldn't really do it much harm... maybe I should see what Loofah Boy's going to do... anybody else feeling brave?

Holy Crap! You guys are Keith crazy!
I've never seen so many hearts in my life.

Keith Rocks! :headbang:

I recently started watching the show because he was the only one to cover the voting fraud issues and I became hooked.

I started sending him emails of show suggestions and under reported stories that I thought were interesting.

Out of curiosity yesterday I did a search for "Olbermann" in DU...

Well that's how I found you guys.

I read through a few of the recent threads last night and decided to pop in tonight except it's Friday and I had plans to go out. :toast:

I like Keith but wowie... I was getting hot reading through all of your posts. I had no idea KO had such a following.

I can definitely see the attraction. :loveya:

I'll try to check in from time to time. I usually watch the rerun though so you guys have gone to bed long before me.

I can't believe you guys stayed up late picking out ties. That's funny. I'll post these again Monday, but if anyone's out there, here you go -- I have some suggestions:

Is is about the green/gray suit?

http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27705&rangeid=343

http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27721&rangeid=343 (this one's really silly, but I like Moschino)
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=41390&rangeid=5
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=41352&rangeid=5
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=41345&rangeid=5 (same, but a different color)
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=40886&rangeid=5

As for the dark suits:
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=40957&rangeid=5
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27717&rangeid=343
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=15414&rangeid=343
http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27615&rangeid=343

http://www.raffaello-network.com/raffties/detail.php?itemid=27697&rangeid=343

And bunny's right: that gray suit can't be saved. :)

This thread was a very funny read. I'd like to congratulate everyone on being the #1 thread in post counts so far today in GD. :) Bye, All!

349. hubby's taken my little one to the park
so I'm playing hooky for a while. I can look at ties now, but maybe not on Monday; it'll probably be my turn to read bedtime stories.

ties for the green/grey suit:

1: definitely looks like Keef. Safe "newscaster" tie; interesting enough for us.
2: I like it; don't know how he'd feel about the daisies, although they're subtle.
3: Ooh, pretty, but will it strobe on TV? Sure like it, though.
4: Snort. Not so much.
5: Ooh, I like this one, too. Patsy, you found a lot of good ones.
6: This is good, too, but I liked 5 better.
7: Better than 6, I think.
8: I'd steer clear of this one. This yellow might make him look sallow.

ties for dark suits:

1: Smoooooth.
2: I don't know. This is kind of busy, but it would look good with that dark blue shirt of his.
3: "Cap'n the Klingons are attacking!"
4: Oh, now that's different, and would definitely look good with a dark blue shirt. (Yeah, we like that shirt, don't we?)
5: Bwahaha! Little men! But it looks like a normal tie on camera. Me like.
6: A "safe" newscaster tie.

Hmm... my votes... #5 from the gray/green suit category (with 3 as a close runner up but I'm concerned about possible strobing). For the dark suit category, 1, followed closely by 5.

I didn't check... do these come in longer lengths? Part of last night's never-ending discussion was whether or not KO needs extra-long ties and our best guess is that he probably does...

I agree that the light gray suit is unsalvageable; I just don't know of a way to stop the man from wearing it, short of paintballing him whilst in it, and that sure as hell isn't a viable solution...

352. I'm serious. The guy's gotta be relieved we're not all in the same
town. If he's actually fool enough to wander through here now and then to catch the instant Nielsons, it must be pretty scary to see all these women obsessing on his appearance, like he's some giant Ken doll. The funny thing is, I never gave a rat's ass about playing Barbies!

353. Hi
ties for the green/grey suit:

1: definitely looks like Keef. Safe "newscaster" tie; interesting enough for us. --- Yes, I started slow so as not to scare anyone away. :)
2: I like it; don't know how he'd feel about the daisies, although they're subtle. --- I thought so too. And it's very Moschino.
3: Ooh, pretty, but will it strobe on TV? Sure like it, though. --- Don't know, but I like it lots.
4: Snort. Not so much. --- I know, but I had to do it. It went with the suit and a Moschino tie is really not a Moschino tie unless it says it in a big, garish way.
5: Ooh, I like this one, too. Patsy, you found a lot of good ones. --- This is one of my faves.
6: This is good, too, but I liked 5 better. --- Agreed, and I like 7 better anyway.
8: I'd steer clear of this one. This yellow might make him look sallow. --- I agree, but people were picking out gold/yellow ties earlier. Me, not so much.

ties for dark suits:

1: Smoooooth. --- This tie is to die for.
2: I don't know. This is kind of busy, but it would look good with that dark blue shirt of his. --- Another silly tie. I love this tie. I love the exaggerated houndstooth. :)
3: "Cap'n the Klingons are attacking!" --- I know! But it looks interesting from far away and I think he's a sci-fi geek. He's made "Logan's Run" jokes.
4: Oh, now that's different, and would definitely look good with a dark blue shirt. (Yeah, we like that shirt, don't we?) --- We do, and I love this tie.
5: Bwahaha! Little men! But it looks like a normal tie on camera. Me like. --- :)
6: A "safe" newscaster tie. --- Yep. If not a bit boring.

>Hmm... my votes... #5 from the gray/green suit category (with 3 as a >close runner up but I'm concerned about possible strobing). For the >dark suit category, 1, followed closely by 5.
It seems we agree. You have excellent taste! :toast:

> I didn't check... do these come in longer lengths?

Again, don't know. He seems to be the same size as my hubby if what everyone said here is true. I don't recall ever buying a longer length tie. Hmmm.

>I agree that the light gray suit is unsalvageable; I just don't know of a way to stop the man from wearing it...

357. how tall is your hubby?
Keef has a longer than usual torso, so we can't judge by his height alone. (Don't know how much of last night's silliness you read; obviously some of it.)

An email campaign about the suit... I might be willing to do that... so far I've only written him once and that was very straightforward stuff about news in his blog (startled the hell out of me to see my email up on the webpage the next day; made me wish I'd spent a little more time polishing it but I was running late)... we could always "request" the retirement of the light gray suit when we deliver the tie and imply that if it DOESN'T get retired, we'll SEND A DAMNED SUIT NEXT YEAR, BUDDY. Hmm, was that a little forceful for a demure, non-threatening, mostly harmless, geographically dispersed lil' fangirl like me?

369. Ok, I couldn't resist looking at the ties and throwing in my two cents.
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 03:19 PM by crispini
Despite my avowed lack of fashion sense for guys.

gray green
1- gray/gray stripes - nice
2- little daisies and peace signs -- hee! very subtle though.
3- gold w. squares- also nice
4- I actually really like your silly one.
5- I like this one, but I betcha a nickle it'll strobe on camera. I think anything that busy with a small pattern would have that potential -- I think we should either go with a big pattern like wide stripes, or a very subtle small pattern that looks like it's all one color. That's just a guess.... I think this one has more of a potential to look bad on camera than #3. Of course, that's based on 1 broadcast journalism class and student newscasts from 15 years ago, and we didn't wear ties, so
6- VERY nice. And he does like gold, doesn't he?
7- Looked the same as 6 to me? Maybe I clicked on the wrong link?
8- also nice.

dark ties
1- is that silver? nice
2- I like it, but we've never, EVER seen him wear anything like this, have we?
3- LOL at gkhouston's comment. Klingons, heh.
4- gold: blue/brown dots. Very nice, I do like it.
5- Little men. Cute!
6- Gold stripe, nice.

My only thought is I think we'd be better off picking something pretty similar to what we've seen him wear, rather than any wild departures. That said, I do like Dark #4, even though it's different. For something in the category of "what we've already seen" I like Gray Green #1.

That said, I'll defer to the group, I just wanted to go look at the ties. :7 Hopefully bunny will throw in her two cents as well.

Some of the ties he's already got look a little too "bunchy" around the neck, which makes me wonder if they're regular ties and he'd benefit from a longer one... could be that a "good" long one is hard to come by.

that should be a bluish-silvery diagonally striped silk tie, extra long. This site also has some solids, and a lot of unremarkable stripes, plus a few pinks Keith wouldn't be caught dead in.

I liked the bronze better, too, truth to tell, but we seemed to be drifting away from yellows and toward silver/greys. And I noticed that "black tie". Moschino is what led me to that site. I'm not sure he could get away with wearing that tie on the air, though. Do you think the bottom would tuck into his jacket and be hidden when he needed to have his serious news face on?

Pros: we think it would be kind of fun
Cons: we don't want to freak KO out

we're thinking that if we did it collectively, the gift might seem less stalker-ish than if one person sent him something. I'm not 100% sure it's going to happen, but it's sounding more likely than not, right now, at least to me. If we decided at the last minute, though, that we aren't comfortable with doing this, I'm not going to get huffy. It's a fun idea whether or not we act on it.

Which one was that, with the little men, I'm getting confused?

Polls, FYI, only have 10 choices on them, so we should probably figure out the most popular ones first and post them on the poll. (This is starting to remind me of the nonfiction book club, heh!)

We should probably also do it at a time when we're all gonna be here, and just let it run for a short time, and then lock it. Otherwise god-knows-who can vote in it and we'll wind up with what nobody likes, heh.

This thread is turning out to be MASSIVELY long, heh.

Hey, thanks for the heads up. I can not believe that this thread is still going strong. LOL

I am not much of a fashion guru, so I would offer just this.

It should be something he is likely to wear, and it should be something we will be able to easily identify when he does wear it.

I liked the message that Bleever came up with. I agree to leave off the "Estrogen" part. I think this is a really good thing to do. Keef definitely deserves it. :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

411. I like #6 in both groups.
I really can't imagine what KO would think if he got a tie from us but if he reads this, he wouldn't be too surprised I suppose! But I do agree that he'd be less freaked out if it came from a whole group of us. I can hear something like this, "That many women and they could only get me one tie?" Then of course, he'd realize we're Democrats and bleeding heart liberals and of course, no doubt, have a host of "causes" besides him!!!! And hopefully we wouldn't scare the crap out of him with our gift of love and adoration. Which will be accompanied by a sweet note telling him to dump the light grey jacket, wear jeans again, and please, please, please give us a glimpse of suspenders again soon!!!!

And oh yeah, BLOG damn you, BLOG. I'm in withdrawal. Once a week is NOT cutting it for me.

354. Hi Ladies!
I can't believe it's Saturday afternoon and this thread is still going strong! You ladies rock!

I've missed the KOEB meetings because my dear grandmother passed away on Wednesday.

I need a laugh so I'll be reading this thread and catching up on all I've missed!

These floaty hearts are in honor of my abuela who would have loved Keith if only she could've understood him (she didn't speak English). :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

We have missed you! People have asked about you every night. The hearts don't float quite so high when you're gone...

405. If I had two cents, and I were toss them in, I would say by all means
buy him a tie. And if you want to avoid that oh-so-gauche stalker vibe, then just tell him it's a gift from devoted and appreciative fans from DU who started watching him for the election fraud converage, and became enamored of his forthrightness and humor.

Do not, repeat, do not, use the word "estrogen".

Baked goods are a nice idea, but food from strangers is a little weird. You know, security and all that.

And remember that if he has any knowledge of this place or its unholy doings, he's got a context and knows you're not dangerous in "that" way.

414. I think bleever's giving good advice on estrogen and food
as nice as it would be to bake something for him, somebody with celiac disease is going to be doubly suspicious of food from strangers. Even well-intentioned gifts with a speck of gluten could spell big-time pain. There are folks with celiac disease who are so sensitive to even the tiniest amounts of gluten they won't buy their "safe" flours pre-ground: they do the grinding themselves, for fear the commercial grinders will have used the equipment to grind gluten-containing flours .

There are some male Keef fans floating around DU, and they even brave these threads (hardy souls). Even amongst the ladies, there are, shall we say, varying levels of floctulation? So leaving out the word estrogen would probably accurate and smart. Just say, "many happy returns from your fans at DU, who are mostly harmless."

418. I had the same thought about the food too.
I think a little note saying something like, "From your unoffical nightly fan gathering at the Democratic Underground." And yes, we do need to assure him that we are very harmless. I wish we knew if he had a favorite charitable cause--that would be a good idea too--make donations in his name to a favorite cause.

I think he would be very touched if we made a donation to a charity in his name but then again we don't know which charities he prefers.
