Did you catch Howard Dean's sound bite about Bush's speech?
Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, the early front-runner for the Democratic nomination, called Bush's remarks "nothing short of outrageous."

"In 15 minutes, he attempted to make up for 15 months of misleading the American people and 15 weeks of mismanaging the reconstruction," he said.

2. And accurate!
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 11:22 PM by w4rma

In his speech, Bush called Iraq the "central front" in the war on terrorism and said foreign terrorists were to blame for recent violence there. But Dean said the security vacuum caused by the war itself is to blame for that situation.

"The president has created a much more dangerous situation in Iraq," Dean said. "The president has created Iraq to be the front line of terrorism."

4. Its so nice that he's not afraid to be the first to go out on a limb.
No one can accuse him of being too cautious, managed, or timid. Makes me proud to be a Deanie.

5. Dean reminds me of President Truman
at least the Truman I read about in the history books, and in his autobiography. Truman was plain speaking, what today we would call blunt.

Maybe Graham, since he was on Larry King, but I'm not sure what he said. Who else?

18. Bob Graham and Howard Dean are the only candidates to comment
on Bush's speech tonight. I am sure that Kucinich had something already to say, which the media will make sure we don't get to hear about it. I understand that the others are polling to see what their responses ought to be.

I don't know about Lieberman, but I no longer see him as a Democrat.

24. good one ... since both Kerry and Gephardt commented last night
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 06:23 AM by xequals
But of course Dean was the only one who said anything :eyes:

Democrats see him as increasingly vulnerable, as the statements from one of his potential rivals reflected last night. "Other than telling the country that this will be expensive, the president did very little to demonstrate he has a true plan," said Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) "This president must offer more specifics on these and other important questions if he is to build the legitimacy and consent of this nation and our neighbors throughout the world to win the peace in Iraq and win the global war on terror."

http://publicbroadcasting.net/opb/news.newsmain?action=article&ARTICLE_ID=542808

U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt gave credit to Bush for recognizing that he has been going down the wrong path. Now he said the administration must begin the process of "fully engaging" America's allies and sharing the burden of building a stable democracy in Iraq.

Though not yet a candidate, I did see Gen. Clark on Fox News about an hour after the speech. There was a thread about it here, I believe. He ripped Hannity a new one.

6. Well according to my local "impartial" paper....
Dean is a "fiscal dreamer" That right wing rag the Journal Courier say that his statment about not trading with countries without workers rights is a sure fire way to "start" a recession. And, repealing(sp?oh well) the tax cut to nationalize the health care sytem is a bad idea. Shit heads havnt a freaking clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9. You think Dean's response was fast, check out mine
Folly and Failure, Bush's speech undressed.
According to Mr. Bush’s speech tonight his administration has 3 overall goals in Iraq.
1. Destroy the Terrorists in Iraq
2. Receive help from other countries/the UN
3. Bestow Democracy upon the Iraqi people

This sounds great, but let’s look at the Bush government’s record thus far at:
1. Destroying Terror in Iraq:
The only evidence that Iraq harbored terrorists was that a single Al-Qaeda member had sought medical attention in Iraq after fleeing Afghanistan. Since our attack on Iraq, resentment against America has skyrocketed throughout the world; Islamic anger against our action has boiled to the point that terrorists have flooded into Iraq. They do this not because Saddam was their ally (In fact Bin Laden declared a holy war to free Kuwait from Saddam during Bush the First’s Gulf War), but because the power vacuum created by his removal has become a harbinger of extremism and violence. Iraq has changed from a land controlled by a dictator, to a battleground, a “central front” in the war against terror, thus diverting our resources from our battle against the criminals who caused the attacks of September 11th. Instead of curbing Terrorism, we have in fact allowed it to spill over into Iraq.
2. Receiving help from other countries/the UN:
“Freedom Fries” “Old Europe” “The UN is Irrelevant”… Need I say more? Okay, I will. According to Bush it is the UN’s “Duty” and “Responsibility” to help him out in Iraq, but as you will remember Bush was more than happy to snub our traditional allies and attempt to delegitimize the UN. This is why so many of us wanted Bush to deal with the world in a multilateral way. We shunned unilateralism not because we didn’t think America is a strong, proud nation able to act militarily on its own, but because we didn’t want to eat crow when we realized we needed allies to rebuild Iraq into the prosperous nation Bush promised. Bush has disgraced America by failing to think through America’s entire mission in Iraq; by being forced to slink back to the UN, after claiming America is strong enough to go it alone, we are showing incredible weakness, which tonight Bush himself claimed is the cause of Terrorism.
3. Bestowing Democracy Upon the Iraqi people:
If Bush really wanted the Iraqi people to vote, he would not have had Paul Bremmer cancel the June mayoral elections in Najof Iraq.

12. It was Gary Kamiya on Salon
From Salon.com
Dated Thursday September 4

Would you like some freedom fries with your crow, Mr. President?
Six months after spitting in the face of the world, the Bush administration is crawling on its belly before the U.N. If the world doesn't rush to help it, the White House has only itself to blame.
By Gary Kamiya

The Bush administration's humiliating announcement that it wants the U.N. to bail it out officially confers the title of "debacle" upon the grand Cheney-Rove-Wolfowitz adventure. Not even the world-class chutzpah of the Bush administration can conceal the fact that by turning to the despised world body, it is eating a heaping plate of crow. This spectacle may give Bush-bashers from London to Jakarta a happy jolt of schadenfreude, but it does nothing to help Americans who are stuck with the ugly fallout of the administration's ill-conceived, absurdly over-optimistic attempt to redraw the Middle East.

Read more. It's an excellent piece.

19. Dean is great!
Just the other day on CNN Bugman Delay was saying Dean didn't have the temperament to be president. Then he went on to say what a wonderful president Bush is. It was almost too much to listen to.

I think Delay inhaled too much bug spray. He is such a weasel (apologies to all the weasels of the world).

It has been a frequent observation that Americans don't want to spend a lot of time thinking about things. Dean is doing a great job of creating these sound bites and laying it on the line with brilliant simplicity. All of the Democrats should be taking advantage of some of these.
