2. Senator Mark Dayton's office told me that he will vote against
Gonzales, but said a filibuster is up to the Democratic leadership.

I don't want Democrats to just vote against Gonzales for symbolic purposes.

I went them to fiibuster to stop Gonzales from becoming Attorney General because Gonzales will be a horrible Attorney General if confirmed.

5. The nay vote comes first --contact your Senator this week
You are assuming that a majority of Senators will vote to confirm. A reasonable assumption, but if you start with demanding a filibuster you are playing the politics of defeatism. If we can't get a single Republican vote, a filibuster may block the confirmation. But it will divide the Democrats, and if we can't even get close to 40 nays, it will divide them for purely symbolic purposes. That could hurt our ability to block other nominees down the road.

Now is the time to express our disapproval of Alberto Gonzales to all of our Senators, Republicans and Democrats alike. There are many fencesitters who are waiting to hear what their constituents think. We must get them lined up to oppose Gonzales.

6. Saving the pressure for supreme court
Word is, they know they'll get a slimeball for the job, one way or antoher, so, they're saving the fight for the supreme court where it will really matter. makes sense, really. Since the whole national security machine is largely tissue paper, anyway, it doesn't matter who sits around kissing the king's but, so, it's not worth the fight.
