Illinois's 17th district

this looks like a prime case of gerrymandering, but to benefit who? Illinois had a split legislature before the 2002 elections, so it's unlikely a gerrymandering plan by one party could get through. Also if the Democrats gerrymandered Illinois they did a horrible job of it as it has 10 Republicans to 9 Democrats in the delegation in a rather Democratic state, yet I don't see how a Democratic House could let something this blatant get through if it benefited the Repukes.

1. Who has the seat?
Looks to me like they were trying to get the big towns in western Illinois in one district.

2. Lane Evans (D)
and Gore carried it 53/43, but as I said, if it's a Democratic attempt at gerrymandering they did one lousy job since the Republicans still have a majority. It would make sense to me to give some of those suburban districts heavily minority areas in Chicago.

3. Redistricting Lotto
A lottery determines who does redistricting in Illinois.

4. I should know about this but can't remeber at this time?
Let me do some checking and I will see what I can find out. this thread is book marked. btw most of those counties have small pops.
Most likely done by Repuks. Dem just won the state offices last time around and have not had time to change them.
