Orf's 'Carmina Burana' perfect soundtack for Bush's speech |
|
was played tonight on my favorite station: "Oh Fortune, Empress of the world, first you exalt me then you overthrow me".
The third section is entitled 'The Fool": "I rave about what I don't understand".

Is a masgterpiece, but I can see your point...
Also the instrumentation gives me goosebumps, if you know what I mean.

...Whereas it is proper for a wise man to place his foundations on rock, I, in my folly, am like a flowing river, never staying on the same course.
I am borne along like a ship without a sailor, just as a wandering bird is carried along paths of air; chains do not keep me nor does a key; I seek men like myself, and I am joined with rogues.
For me a serious heart is too serious a matter; a joke is pleasant and sweeter than honeycombs...

...my general musical "anthem" for the entire neo-con/Bush administration is from Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky" cantatta, the "Invaders in Pskov" song. The cruel, self-righteous arrogance of the 13th century Teutonic invaders as portrayed by the grim, Latin chant in this song precisely matches this whole gang of right-wing fanatics we are currently stuck with:
"Peregrinus excpectavi pedes meos in cymbalis est" (As a foreigner, I expect my feet to be (met with sound of) cymbals) - "Invaders in Pskov" from "Alexander Nevsky" by Prokofiev.

7. How about Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' |
|
Over a montage of dead soldiers/Iraqis, interspersed with shots of the smirking Chimp and his minions? Too over the top?

"Carmina Burana". Great music based on the ravings of monks driven mad by sexual deprivation!

Carmina Burana was an older text. Orff was not the first to put it to music. I think it was early baroque.
