Keith Olbermann will cover the Hersch Iran story
It's not on his blog yet, but the title of today's emailed Newsletter is "IRAN: The New Frontier?" and it begins:

Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

U.S. commandos have already begun searching for secret chemical and nuclear sites in Iran... The Administration has been conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran at least since last summer. The goal is to identify and isolate three dozen, and perhaps more, such targets that could be destroyed by precision strikes and short-term commando raids.

(snip)
--------------
The link at the end is to the full-text version of Seymour Hersch's New Yorker article. Clearly, he will cover this story tonight on his show. It will be interesting to compare what he says with the spin from the other networks. We can get a foretaste of that administration spin from this DU thread on the DOD response to the Hersch story:

3. So Karl Rove and Rummy are sitting in a bar...
Karl turns to Rummy, who's reading a copy of the New Yorker and asks,
"Is it Friday already?"

I sure they wish it was.

5. I'd like to think they're worried, but their arrogance is too huge
to be worried that they can't crush this dissent like all the others.

Let's do everything we can to prove the opposite. We MUST build massive opposition and fight to legally challenge and/or repeal the obviously unconstitutional law giving b* the "right" to invade countries on his whim and without Congressional approval.

6. Are the Neo-cons losing it? The Iranians will kick our butts.
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 06:23 PM by McCamy Taylor
Not only that, Iran and China recently signed some kind of trade treaty, and China and Russia recently had miltary exercises--Chinese people power plus Russian weaponry = major military threat.

And as if that isn't enough, Iran has the dope on Papa Bush's Hostages for Votes Deal which they will distribute to the world press in a heart beat if the US drops so much as one bomb on them. I realize that Poppy isnt part of the Neo-cons and that they are only using *, but Brother Jeb is a member in good standing of the Neo-Con cabal, surely he wont take the chance that his daddy's not so closely guarded secret will finally be proven.

The only thing I can think of is that * is going to use this as a last resort. If a Special Prosecutor is appointed or it looks like anyone gets close to uncovering the truth behind 9-11gate, WMDgate or Votergate, he wants to be ready to start WWIII on another continent, figuring that if he blows away the half of the world he doesnt live on, maybe his crimes at home will somehow be overlooked.

That is the only logical explanation IF it is true that the US is really making plans to go to war with Iran. Cause it isnt a war that anyone in their right minds would think we could win.

Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 05:58 PM by McCamy Taylor
Through diplomacy. Crisis averted! Make her look like skilled negotiator. * boasts about being a peace president. Iranian government is in on the whole thing. We secretly send them more weapons just like we did in the 80's.

I sure hope it is this scenerio and not the one above.

10. "Are they losing it?" I think they've LOST it already
These people are insane, and I don't mean that as just an insult. There has been a new term coined for their special -- and contagious-- form of mental illness: "malignant egophrenia."

Here's the must-read article about that:
http://baltimorechronicle.com/011305PaulLevy.html

ANALYSIS:
The Madness of George W. Bush: A Reflection of Our Collective Psychosis
Bush’s sickness is our own.

by Paul Levy

George W. Bush is ill. He has a psycho-spiritual disease of the soul, a sickness that is endemic to our culture and symptomatic of the times we live in. It’s an illness that has been with us since time immemorial. Because it’s an illness that's in the soul of all of humanity, it pervades the field and is in all of us in potential at any moment, which makes it especially hard to diagnose.

Bush's malady is quite different from schizophrenia, for example, in which all the different parts of the personality are fragmented and not connected to each other, resulting in a state of internal chaos. As compared to the disorder of the schizophrenic, Bush can sound quite coherent and can appear like such a "regular," normal guy, which makes the syndrome he is suffering from very hard to recognize. This is because the healthy parts of his personality have been co-opted by the pathological aspect, which drafts them into its service. Because of the way the personality self-organizes an outer display of coherence around a pathogenic core, I would like to name Bush's illness ‘malignant egophrenic (as compared to schizophrenic) disease,’ or ‘ME disorder,’ for short. If ME disorder goes unrecognized and is not contained, it can be very destructive, particularly if the person is in a position of power.

You have to make some selections to get exactly what you want. After you sign up, they send you one confirmatory email that you reply to, and then the newsletters keep coming. They do give you coverage that supplements and sometimes predates his blog.

(self edited - I decided to give the link now rather than later.)

13. Is there anyone here that could influence Keith to cover Sibel
Edmonds story? If it got more mainstream attention, I'm certain that it would bring the Bushies down.

Here is the latest:

She's planning a press conference on 1/26.

15. I agree completely. This is the scandal that would bring them down.
The 9/11 investigations story, including Sibel Edmonds and her story, should be given a separate forum on DU, in my opinion.

16. Hmm. Is this story getting leaked so that * can dump the Neo-cons?
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 06:26 PM by McCamy Taylor
There has been talk going around for almost a week about blaming them for the mess in Iraq and getting rid of them. This hare brained scheme to invade Iran would be just what Karl Rove needs to force * to cut the umbilical with the Neo Cons and start fresh.

Think about where we are reading/seeing this story. This is CNN, the network which sponsored the Invasion of Iraq, the network which does the administration's bidding. Someone in the White House wants this story out. And MSNBC is letting Keith run with it.

I feel a lot more comfortable now. I dont think we are going to see Iran invaded. I think we are going to see the final days of the Neo-Cons in the White House.

19. I think you'll change your mind if you read the full Hersch story
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 06:26 PM by Nothing Without Hope
It isn't just about the Iran invasion preparations. It's also about systematically hollowing out the CIA and removing all oversight or input or control over the b* admin's plans. You should read the entire text of Hersch's New Yorker story. It's at a link in my initial post of this thread.

This progression into further war and freedom from interference are what *b wants. It's not just the other neocons. Hersch would not do them any favors anyway.

Further, here's the DOD response to the Hersch story:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=2962794#2962929
They're spinning like mad, just like they did after he broke the Abu Ghraib story. No, he's not their friend and I fear for his safety.

23. Im sure the Neo Cons are up to their eyeballs in dirty-stupid stuff
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 06:42 PM by McCamy Taylor
The are a bunch of crazy old men who want to rule the world. Karl Rove is much smarter than all of them put together, and by now he has figured out that they are a major liability to his candidate.

What better way to get rid of them than to let adminstration "sources" know that the hammer will not fall down upon them if they speak to journalists about Neo-con activities? Or when GE and CNN and Murdoch call to ask if it is ok to run the Iran story, tell them "Sure, go right ahead."

In this case, I dont care if Karl Rove gets his way. The Neo-Cons are an order of magnitude more evil in their actions than Rove is, and I will be glad to see them go.

PS I still wonder if Rove takes orders from Barbara Bush. Anyone know if she has a head for political dirty tricks?

21. God, I hope so.
Not that it will make me actually like Shrub, but it's at least a step in the correct direction.

(For the record, I would still think of Shrub as incompetent and unable to lead coherently.)

22. More on the Hersch Iran story here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=2962328#2963307

In this thread I linked to the New Yorker story and also to 3 earlier DU threads started before the full text of Hersch's story became available. It's well worth reading through the comments in all these threads. There is some interesting information there.

Also this thread links to another DU thread giving video of a Hersch interview on the Iran story.
