Clint Eastwood, a class act and a Republican I can respect
Why? Because he doesn't let stupid crap like politics get in the way of what his real passion are, making great movies and telling moving stories. Mutual respect between he and his actors is another reason why guys like Sean Penn and Tim Robbins love him like their winning football coach, his passion for movies stand above all else.

Republican he may be, but a domineering icon in American cinema is how he will be remembered.

I see him as kind of libertarian. His latest film is excellent.

3. Yeah, but can he handle a gun?
I spent the late 60s and early 70s watching him literally light up the screen in gems like "Dirty Harry" and "The Gauntlet".

He's aged and like wine he's gotten better.

Who among us does not think that his more recent work is his best?

and supporting torture, and I'll change my mind. Btw, he supported Sean Penn when Penn went to Baghdad to protest the war, and when asked about the invasion he calls it a mistake.

Looks like Freeper's aren't the only ones who recklessly prejudge others and immediately jump to unsubstantiated conclusions after all.

130. In an interview I read last year - USA Weekend
He said "I've never thought of myself as a conservative, although I am no ultra-leftist either."

He strikes me a common-sense independent. Considering what his directing talent has gotten out of such leftist icon actors as Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, and the like, he is no soulless repub.

36. I never recalled hearing of Clint Eastwood supporting the war in Iraq...
much less causing one. Precisely what fundamentalist, hard-right leaning action has Clint Eastwood done? All I know is last year he made Mystic River, a movie demostrating the devasting physical, and psychological consequences of people who have suffered from child molestation and exploitation. He, Sean Penn, and Tim Robbins have said and done a hell of a lot more for child abuse victims than most will in a lifetime.

You're reading the NY Daily News btw, they're not exactly known for holding back their sensationalist tendencies.

And besides, what else would you expect Dirty Harry to say? I think the main point he was making was that he loves the fact that there freedom of speech for everybody including Michael Moore.

72. well lets take a step back for a second here, from that same NY Daily News
gossip piece

"Michael Moore and I actually have a lot in common - we both appreciate living in a country where there's free expression," Eastwood told the star-dotted crowd attending the National Board of Review awards dinner at Tavern on the Green, where Eastwood picked up a Special Filmmaking Achievement prize for "Million Dollar Baby."

Then, the Republican-leaning actor/director advised the lefty filmmaker: "But, Michael, if you ever show up at my front door with a camera - I'll kill you."

The audience erupted in laughter, and Eastwood grinned dangerously.

"I mean it," he added, provoking more guffaws.

Sitting well out of range at a table in back, Moore - who received a special "Freedom of Expression" award for his anti-Bush polemic "Fahrenheit 9/11" - chuckled.

Was Clint admiring the fact that he and Michael Moorehave freedom of speech in America? Check

Did people laugh? Check

Did Michael Moore laugh? Check

so what exactly is the problem here?

MM chuckling doesn't mean it wasn't in disgust. I'm chuckling right now too. Tell me why?

That free-speech crap could have been just a red-herring for what followed, A THREAT TO KILL HIM!

I can think of a thousand ways to kid with MM about a surprise interview, all of them without including "I WILL KILL YOU". Can't you?

160. Call him what you will
He joked about killing Michael Moore, implying he doesn't agree with Michael Moore. I don't give a rat's ass whether he calls himself a Republican or a Libertarian or a Fiscaliberalenvironmentalist -- he's messing with someone who's worked tirelessly to expose Republican lies which have cost thousands of lives, run up a huge deficit, and are trashing the environment.

Most importantly, his "joke" was made to someone who travels with a cadre of bodyguards because of real death threats. So excuse me if I don't agree that Clint is very, very funny. Fuck him, and the horse he rode in on.

That may not seem big to you, but it most certainly drives the freepers crazy when they realize that he supported one of their favorite celebrity targets, Sean Penn, make such a provocative protest against a Baghdad backdrop, and also help rejuvenate his career by directing him in Mystic River.

Me, I prefer to know what I'm talking about before I actually talk about it. But then, like you said, I'm the smart guy.

I think we agree that Eastwood is not a knee jerk Repuke. I liked the article and I'm not bashing Eastwood. I like him as an artist as well.

I think his attitude toward Penn says it all (as outlined in the article). The guy is comfortable enough with who he is to be around all sorts of people. Penn is, I expect, pretty good company anyway.

by your standard, he would still be a Chimpy supporter. Not that I know how Eastwood voted, or if he voted at all--I just want to be sure I understand you correctly.

Because a person hasn't changed their party affiliation, that is tacit approval of Bush, is that it? Even if they were one of the many moderate Republicans that came out against him? Still a Chimp supporter, huh?

on edit: and yes i think bush is disgusting enough that you should switch political affiliations because you are sufficiently upset with him.

Because if you did, you wouldn't have asked that question.

I find Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman disgusting. But since I'm still a Democrat, and the party hasn't done anything to get rid of them, I guess that means I support everything that comes out of their pieholes.

47. You're right. Your way is much simpler.
You have shown me the light. I will now have a knee-jerk reaction to every gossip column I read. I will cut off all contact with friends and acquaintances that are still registered Republicans, despite the fact they voted for Kerry. I will not judge people by the content of their character, but by what box they have checked on their voter registration card.

think that their party still stands for. Like balanced budgets, less instrusive government, and no nation building. You know, all the stuff Bush campaigned for in 2000 but did the very opposite of.

Forget the fact that he thought that the war was a mistake, and supported Sean Penn when Penn asked him what he thought if going to Baghdad to protest the war would hurt the movie Mystic River. Yeah just forget ALL of that and reinforce that little factoid that b/c Clint COULD be a Republican, he is not worthy of your respect.

79. Don't know
It's their choice. I think they're stupid. They don't. Maybe they mistakenly think they can 'save' their party. Maybe they don't change because they've just become accustomed to it. Maybe they like the envelopes. I don't know.

I just try to judge people on more than a voter registration card and one dumb--and misinterpreted--fucking gossip column.

Yep, you're right. Reading it now, it's a strawman. I'll admit to it, although it wasn't intentional. But is a strawman more or less reprehensible a dialectic tactic than giving a false impression of an article? You be the judge. Just read the article first.

16. Clint told Davis he'd make Anti-Arnold ads for the CA Recall.
OK, do you know how awesome this is. It puts Clint in the fucking hall of fame, regardless of party. I'm sorry the Davis campaign didn't take him up (probably indicative of why there was a recount in the first place). Clint saying Arnold is an asshole on the tube would have shot down Arnold like a caged pigeon at a Chaney-Scalia hunting event.

He is an outstanding director and one who may be a bit to the center politically (and who cares) but who loves jazz, his art, and embrases talent (e.g., Penn, Robins, etc.).

There was a thread about a comment Clint made to Michael Moore which, if it comes up below, I can assure you was a joke.

Clint's one of the good guys (and served in an appointed capacity in the Davis administration on a state park/forest panel of some sort).

He will be remembered for his movies in the years to come. Why he can't be respected for them now I don't understand.

Conservatives are all in a tizzy over Million Dollar Baby though. It bothers them that a movie about euthanasia is a good movie. I would hate to think Clint is alienating both sides of the aisle at this late date in his career.

83. Welcome to DU, SailorGirlW
I like Eastwood's films as well.

I watch his films, not his politics. I've never dissected any of his movies, but have not noticed any in which there was some blatant message that upset me.

All Repugs are not Satan. Some are just a little misguided.

75. I don't support people who support fascism, torture, etc
no I don't, and THEY cannot claim that I do. THEIR beef with me is I care about other things besides me, myself and I. Sorry, I can no longer respect anyone who would - after all that has happened - call themselves a republican. Just cannot do it.

156. After the things Repuglicans have done
over the last 12 years it's hard for some of us to find much value in repuglicans. It's almost a free country so you can treasure your repugs if you want to, but don't expect all of us to join you.

43. I know that he voted for Perot in 1992
I think he's more an old fashioned Republican, a true conservative, than a neocon. Unless someone finds a quote where he supports GWB, I doubt it.

This discussion is getting off track. Where are the facts? He's not a Freeper and he's not a social bigot and he makes a hell of a movie. If you don't like his movies, don't go...that simple.

I doubt that he is some idealogue.

Let him make his movies, and let's pick our battles.

67. I adore Clint, always will.....BUT
..though he threatened MM in jest, he could have used the classic "Make My Day Michael Moore" ? Instead of threatening to "kill" him ?

MM's creative genius must be in overload right now..I hope.

Not how I look at politics and how it interacts with an artist's passion and sensibilities.

128. He defended Robbins and Sarandon's right to free speech
When the Baseball Hall of Fame's president (an arch-conservative) said they couldn't come to a screening of Bull Duram in Cooperstown, Eastwood stood up for them and said that they had the right to say what ever they wanted, and he was obviously pissed that they were being censored.
I like Clint. I think he's a master of his craft, and I love westerns.

149. Burge wrote a great book years ago
"Who Are God’s People in the Middle East? What Christians Are Not Being Told About Israel and the Palestinians" (Zondervan, 1993).

I read it to understand what the heck was going on over there after a tour. He uses biblical and historical sources. Some of it is heartbreaking, like the tortures used in Israeli prisons. The back of the book has origonal poetry by various people.

he may or may not agree with us on a lot of things, but the fact that he defended his actor's rights to say what they gotta say demonstrates a lot of class, and warrants mutual respect.

167. look whatever man, its pointless trying to change your opinion of him...
Fact is, he's not one of those ideologues who shuts out other people's opinions, and I'll bet is at least willing to listen to what you have to say about something before he judges you by the look of your voter registration card.

Call him a freeper or and whatever else you've got to say about him, I'm glad that there's still people willing to let you speak and listen, instead of just judging you on the spot based on nothing else.
