that I am inspired to try and limit myself to a very simple meal on Inauguration Day. We're thinking salted rice, maybe a little broth, etc.

Why? To stand in solidarity with those who are suffering and hungry on this day, when one of the richest nations leadership indulges in obscene excessiveness of food, drink, and celebration.

Anyone with me besides Bluebear? At least for one meal? Simple foods? Maybe nuts for snacks? A simple piece of fruit in lieu of sweets? How about fasting?

Give it some thought...

2. Actually I am fasting that day.

I wrote about it in bluebear's thread. My husband is, too.

I am doing it in mindfulness of those in the world who do not have enough food, access to clean water, shelter, adequate clothing. Especially those in the tsunami stricken areas and the Iraqis.

I am not spending a dime that day. Neither is my husband. He is calling in sick to work. I have a HUGE presentation I've been preparing for for weeks, or I would, too.

I am going to spend the morning of that day in prayer and meditation, that this country and our world may be saved from the madness that has gripped us (king george II).

On edit, this isn't an unusual thing for me. I fast every now and then for 24 hours to be mindful of those who don't have what I do. Every time my stomach growls, I think of them and pray for them.

4. I just went back and read your post at the other thread.
It was very moving. I will also try not to spend anything that day if possible. If it weren't for my little kids, this would be much easier.

I really appreciate that you do this somewhat "regularly", BB. It's good to know that others are out there minding the world's business of hunger and want. I think we have given up alot of insightfulness by not regularly fasting as some (a very few) religious groups do.

6. Thanks
I have this cookbook called "More for Less" or something like that and it was written by a woman who was a Mennonite and she talks about eating with responsbility. I read that raising meat products takes up WAY more resources than growing grain products, so we cut back on meat consumption a lot (we aren't vegetarians, but we think of meat as a "condiment" or side dish).

If more Americans stopped eating fast food (ug, ever see Super Size Me or read Fast Food Nation? Ug ug ug) and started eating in a more responsible manner (smaller portions, less meat, etc.), the whole world would be better off. I'm not trying to guilt trip anyone, don't get me wrong, it's just that hunger is a big issue for me, and it pains me to think of ANYONE going hungry anywhere in the world.

5. I realize that this isn't something everyone can do.
Some folks already have highly restrictive diets or physically demanding activities.

I wish I could go to DC to protest, but it isn't in the cards for me right now.
