The attempts of the defendants to justify their part in the German war crimes sound eerily and disturbingly similar to the arguments used by those who defend our killing of civilians in Fallujah, Sammara and dozens of other Iraqi cities.
From the neo-con creation of the "preemptive war" to "secure the homeland by whatever means necessary," the war crimes for which many Germans were found guilty at Nuremberg are identical to the actions being carried out by the Bush administration.
The recent news footage showing a U.S. soldier shooting a wounded and unarmed Iraqi captive is being justified by the U.S. and right-wing talk shows in a way equivalent to that of the Nazi propaganda machine.
