Increasingly blatant racism: repug email sent me on MLK day.
I have a brother in law who is a virulent republican, even ran for political office. No, we don't get along, but as long as he leaves me alone, ok. He's sent me repuke email in the past , and I THOUGHT we agreed he wouldn't do that again. This one he forwarded to me, but I'm sharing it ONLY to make the point that this is something that bears watching.
I think the repugs are getting more and more emboldened to uncloak their racist sides...further, to send me this email on MLK day is certainly warm and fuzzy.
Here's what he sent, and then after I'll put what I sent in reply:

Nope, .....I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you?

So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will
no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids,
airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old
Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males
between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.

Let's send this to as many people as we can so that the Gloria Aldreds and other dunder-headed attorneys along with
Federal Jus tices that want to thwart common sense, feel doubly ashamed of themselves - if they have any such sense.

As the writer of the award winning story "Forrest Gump" so aptly put it, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Come on people wake up!!!
Keep this going. Pass it on to everyone in your address book.
Our Country and our troops need our support!

My reply:

I thought we agreed you wouldn't send me any more racist republican fascist crap like this...let's go back to that arrangement, shall we?

....can tell who is a Muslim and an extremist.

I know many European Muslims who look just like me. I guess they would slip through the profiling net. Then we will have to ask people to declare their religion...and they'll all tell the truth...especially those intent on doing harm.

I would have thought it a bad tactic to tell possible terrorists what profile worried you. Call me old-fashioned, but if I was a terrorist, I might just consider using someone outside the profile.

I have a Nepali (Hindu) friend who ALWAYS gets searched when she flies since 9/11. Becuase she "looks middle eastern." Funny thing is, she doesn't look a bit Middle Eastern. She just has darkish skin.

She has a history of getting into abusive relationships, and no matter what I do, I cannot seem to prevent that.

This may have been an issue a few years ago, but not really anymore. I was flying out of Dallas a while back, and I can tell you that if you looked like you were even slightly arab, the screeners were all over you. Racial profiling exists - don't be so naive.

10. Well, we start at other countries and use foreign intelligence
Don't forget, we had help from other intelligence agencies, namely the French, who were warning us over possible airplane based attacks. And we had our own investigative intelligence community making memos about terrorism.

We don't need to cavity search everybody with dark skin and a beard.

We don't need to confine Muslims, or rather people who fit the Muslim stereotype, to selected areas of the country (ghettos).

We don't need to limit these people just because of what country they are from.

Instead, we need to repair our intelligence policies and get things back on track. After all, Bill Clinton put into practice policies that stopped terrorists during his second term, but no RW guy will hear of it...

14. Oh please...we shouldn't malign all Muslims because a few of them
are fundie nutcases. The same goes for Christianity! If the entire world judged them by the Crusades or the Inquisition, then people would hate them more than they hate all Muslims.

(NOTE: This does not apply to liberal or even moderate Christians. I mean crazy fundie-types who think showing calves is a sin.)

Pope Urban issues a decree that says "Although God says that Thou shalt not kill, it's ok if it's in his name and they're brown people! I don't mind the slayin' if you keep on prayin'!"

Then 100,000 crazed peasants go charging into Jerusalem and kill lots of people, all in God's name. Yeah, right.

Clue: Read a book. Or watch educational TV.

Thre was a sincere religious motive for some Crusaders. Most were out for power & riches. And a significant number wanted it all....

Too bad that so many killed--in Jerusalem & on the way there--were Christians, too.

29. and the fact
and the fact that Al_Quida has recruits from Europe, Australian and the US that are, to be blunt, white, defeats any profiling based on sterotyped lazy thinking about who "looks" like a terrorist. In case you missed it the "shoe bomber" was half-British and half-Caribbean. The Chechians like using women as sucide bombers. While doing extra screening on an 80-year old woman may be overkill just profiling young men who "look Muslim" is stupid.

BTW, would you prefer granite or marble??

for potential threats.

Only the incredibly stupid, naive or racist republicans would LIMIT the people they screen based on stereotypes. A stereotype dun gunna blow me up!

get real: terrorists come in white flavors, too. They also come in 80 year old grandma flavors.

The minute you narrow your screens, is the minute you tip off the terrorists on who they need to recruit to get the job done.

13. Try Painting The Game This Way...
Replace "muslim" with "hispanic"...thus equating all things bad with Mexicans on Spaniards or Argentinans or Puerto Ricans or others. Let's go one step further...let's pretend 19 Mexicans flew planes into our buildings, this surely justifed invading Cuba since we didn't like the dictator there, and not even slap Mexico's hand.

I did this scenario with a wing nut recently and at first he said I didn't know what I was talking about, but the more I added on, the less he could deny.

Then I said, now let's replace "muslim" with "christian". Let's group Catholics with Baptists with African Episcopal with Russian Orthodox and paint all these people with one big brush. He turned white and moved along.

This isn't as racist as it shows how myopic this nation is...and how little we know of the world around us. Ignorance not only encouraged, but rewarded.

60. I have a faint recollection of 9/11
Nationaliies of the hijackers aside, We have no idea where the hijackers were trained, but it was ass-u-me-d by the turds currently in charge that they were trained in Afghanistan. And it was ass-u-me-d that the Taliban did little to nothing to stop any activities by groups deemed (by said turds currently in charge) dangerous to western national secrity.

By your logic then, should we have put the pressure on Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, the UAE and France(the nationality of the presumed 20th hijacker Moussaoi)? Kind of foolish if you expect every nation to be in charge of every one of it's citizens actions across the globe.

But, we give them countless reasons every day to multiply by our relentless (many times unjustified) attacks on their citizens, societies and governments that have gone on for over 50- 60 years.

As long as Americans are oil dependent and want to forcibly control parts of the world with oil, there will be Islamic terrorist resisting us. by the way....Terrorism is a 'tactic' used when one's enemy has overwhelming force; sort of a 'paper covers rock' strategy.

My two cents worth<g>.

yet? Quite an impressive list/links you put together for him. Since it's so much more complicated vs that ridiculous e-mail he sent, I doubt he will take the time.

58. THE LARGER ISSUE: increasingly visible and unchallenged racism..
I'm seeing this more and more since Bush became chimp-select.
Especially after the misperceived "man-date".

I've heard an increase of terms like "raghead", and an alarming number of people avocating genocide in iraq, and dismissing abu ghraib as "hazing"....besides, who cares about Iraqis? sort of thinking.

And this is from coworkers and folks I SUSPECTED were racist, but they never felt comfortable enough to say these things publicly before.

My fear is that this is becoming tacit permission to be racist...and the next step....

We are more like pre-nazi germany every day.

59. that's been circulating for awhile
I totally agree that there has been an upsurge in racism since the election--Bush's "mandate."

I went to a talk the other day by an org. seeking to eradicate racism in the world. Devin Burghart (sp), director of a democracy initiative of the Center for a New Community (http://www.newcomm.org/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 ) said that the cultural clock is rolling back to nationalistic, xenophobic attitudes and that people were elected this year in the United States who are enthusiastic about pursuing such an agenda. According to Burghart, immigrants are now the hardest hit population--here and abroad. An initiative was passed in Arizona that says LEGAL immigrants are not entitled to public services, even though they pay taxes just like everybody else and that the individual(s) who attempts to provide the service can be arrested and, if convicted, sentenced to I think he said it was a year in jail and a considerable fine. The example Burghart used was if an immigrant's home were on fire in Arizona, firefighters are not allowed to put out the fire and if they do, they could be arrested for doing so.

A white supremicist was elected to Arizona's legislature. I'm willing to bet that we have seen a surge of hate crimes--especially against muslims--since 9/11. And then, of course, there were the voting irregularities in Nov. FrenchieCat has an awesome set of photos in her sig line: one shows long voting lines of black people in, I believe, Alabama in the '60s, and equally long voting lines in Columbus, OH, November 2004. And so it continues...

65. You Must Reply to Your BIL with the "here you go" Thread
It's too perfect not to!!! THEN you can cease and desist. Please, please do it then let us know what his response is!

There's even a couple of more you could add:

Fred Hampton's assassination by white males btw. the ages of 17 and 40 (Chicago cops to be exact).

Between 1882 and 1933, more than 3,000 black men and women were lynched by vigilantes in the South.

by white males btw. the ages of 17 and 40 (more or less).

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/g_l/lynching/lynching.htm
Between 1882 (when reliable statistics were first collected) and 1968 (when the classic forms of lynching had disappeared), 4,743 persons died of lynching, 3,446 of them black men and women. Mississippi (539 black victims, 42 white) led this grim parade of death, followed by Georgia (492, 39), Texas (352, 141), Louisiana (335, 56), and Alabama (299, 48). From 1882 to 1901, the annual number nationally usually exceeded 100; 1892 had a record 230 deaths (161 black, 69 white). Although lynchings declined somewhat in the twentieth century, there were still 97 in 1908 (89 black, 8 white), 83 in the racially troubled postwar year of 1919 (76, 7, plus some 25 race riots), 30 in 1926 (23, 7), and 28 in 1933 (24, 4).
