At Circuit city on Sunday they were playing televangelist on the screens!
I walked in to the store only to be hit by "the word of god!"

I asked that the channel be changed and let them know I would never enter Cicuit City again for the rest of my life.

What is the country coming to? And this was in Massachusetts!!!!!

1. In that order? You asked them to change the channel
and told them you'd never be back? Gives them a good incentive to change the channel doesn't it?

Did they refuse to change the channel?

2. They did change the channel..
Who knows for how long, but they looked at me like I had 10 heads when I asked them.

It was a very strange experience.

5. But you are still determined never to go back to Circuit City?
I don't understand the logic. I rarely shop at Circuit City myself, because of it's distance from anywhere I go.

15. Maybe it is just your local store staff/management?
Drop a line to their corporate headquarters. Be polite and inquire if this religious bombardment was their policy or just something done locally. Then let them know that if it is corp policy, they have lost you and your family/friends as customers. Keep it civil.

Let us know if you hear back from them. It is likely that if this is policy at corporate level, we will get the word out and they will lose a lot of customers who believe in a more exclusive philosophy than what televangelists harangue about.

20. Another question
If I went into a record shop (something I do frequently) and they were playing thrash metal or some other music I find annoying and uncomfortable to listen to, I would shorten my stay there, and probably not go back.

But I wouldn't be making any moral judgements on the record shop. They have a right to play whatever they want, and in all fairness some people like metal.

Is that the equivalent of what you are doing here? Or is there a moral component in your decision not to go back there?

I wouldn't know him by name. Just spewing off about the word of god to his followers.

8. Because of one isolated instance reported on the internet??
If you read the followup they changed the channel. Most likely it was the station that they left it on the night before.

With your criteria, it would seem you will soon run out of places to shop.

7. Just curious....why did you feel the need to have the channels changed?..
I'm an Atheist, so no fan of televangelists. But, unless I were going to have to stand in a line for a half hour while it blared at me, I don't really see going to the lengths you went to (not criticizing, just curious).

9. I asked who put it on...
The guy told me I'd have to speak with the manager about it.

I asked him if he could change the channel..

He said he could, and so he did. I never did get to talk with the manager.

...Were you in a situation where you were going to be in that section of the store for awhile?

Not a very long time.. I could have over-reacted, but, like I said, it was very odd.

didn't mean to give you the third degree. Just curious. Possibly living in Texas has made me not even notice stuff like this. I just tune it out.

16. Way to go!!! I don't go there, they give +90% of political $$$$ to repugs
Last year, I found out CC gives a lot of $$$$$ to repugs, so their top managers & stockholders are right wing.

But now this christian angle is worse -- fundamentalist christians are notorious bigots when it comes to hiring people to work in their businesses. Most fundamentalist churches have career centers set up, so they can keep jobs within the family, so to speak.

At any rate, I consider your experience just one more nail in their coffin...there are many other alternatives to choose from. Costco gives almost 100% of their political contributions to Democrats, and considering they are 2 miles from my house, I will go there.

Try Costco, or maybe Best Buy or BrandsMart USA - don't see any info on them.

Cicuit City used to give their employees commission, but they have been phasing it out.

21. On a lighter note ...
they have a small device that fits on a keychain that has only one button. It turns off TV's, for example in stores, restaurants etc. It's a universal remote control that can turn off any TV.
http://tvbgone.com

I don't think it can change the channel.

22. Has it occurred to you...
that the TV's might have been set for something else (football/basketball) later in the day, and the sermon happened to be in an earlier timeslot on the same channel? Or the the channel being shown was whatever was on when the store closed the previous day? I think there are enough problems in the world without visualizing them everywhere?

23. Too late now
There were a couple of chances that I had to change the channel on a TV in a public place, but I regret that I didn't. Once was in the waiting room of a car dealership. Fox news was on and no one seemed to be watching it. Another time was in a cafe that was part of a public library. It also had Fox news on and I could have easily changed it.

25. I used to work for them
We were not under any circumstances to have broadcast TV on. Unless something has changed and the management no longer fears that customers will hear naughty words and competitors ads on TV or radio (and I doubt that) they were breaking the rules to play that.

We did sometimes have ads for christian "music" (that stuff is BAAAAD!) on our piped-in tv, though.
