"God's Politics" Just released; read about it here: http://www.harpercollins.com/global_scripts/product_catalog/book_xml.asp?isbn=0060558288I just saw the author interviewed on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Looks like a very interesting, and timely, book. IMHO.

2. I'm very interested in this book too after that interview |
|
the interview was wonderful and the author made some wonderful points. The right constantly brings up the issue of morality and the left doesn't have a strategy. What did Wallace say? The right acts as if there are only two issues regarding morality: abortion and Gay marriage, but the bible consists of 3,000 verses regarding poverty. And then calling Bush out by stating that for a man who is supposedly so moral, the first thing he does when he gets into office is to cut capital gains tax and invade Iraq. THIS is what WE should be saying over and over.

And it sounded very good. Sounds like it has a lot of ideas to talk to fundies and other Republicans in the red states. The author sounded very resonable, and I plan on buying the book tomorrow.
And that says a lot since I'm an atheist.

The radical rightwing and judgemental policies of the "religious right", along with other militant fundamentalist traditions, have done much to estrange me from religion generally.
But this guy, Jim Wallis, was great! Now that is a religious message I can get behind, and one which I can readily embrace in others! When I hear of a man like this, and know that he is part of a large movement in America, I can feel that maybe things are going to be okay after all. It's the first sense of peace and reconciliation I have felt in years.
Seeing Archbishop Tutu on The Daily Show was wonderful too. His love and humanity overwhelmed me. Truly, there are great leaders out there who hold deep religious convictions, and these are the people I choose to stand with.
So NOW i think I can begin to understand why some DUers get upset when people like me make derogatory remarks about "evangelicals" -- now I understand that evangelicalism is NOT monolithic; in fact, it seems to be a richly rewarding and promising moral movement arising in our country.
Thanks to Jon Stewart for bringing us such inspiring programs. It's an oasis of sanity in a time of madness.
Why haven't I heard of this guy on other "news" programs? No -- they just fill the time with those rabid radical freaks and gasbags, always trying to stir up trouble -- and ignoring those who might truly sow reconciliation in our nation.

want to read it. Added it to the list of 900 good books I want to read. Not enough time in a day. Just goes to remind me that ... there are many progressives in many progressive faiths .. and that some consider themselves to be 'evangelicals.' So, we need to refer to that element that is trying to establish a theocracy in this country by a unique name ... say ... the RRE's - the Religious Right Extremists ... or something. We need to support orgs. like Wallis' and the Interfaith Alliance.
