"The US government wantonly launched sanctions against Chinese companies without real evidence and it is not a wise choice," he said.

The US has slapped new sanctions against seven Chinese companies and two firms from Taiwan and North Korea, charging they may have helped Iran in its quest for WMD and modern ballistic missiles.

A State Department notice said the nine companies are being penalised for transferring "equipment and technology controlled under multilateral export control lists" to Iran.
