In the southwest, it's the prairie dog, a remarkable species with a "language" of chirps and squeals that differentiates humans by sex, color of clothing, and whether or not they're carring anything. These remarkable creatures support rattlesnakes and predators right up the food chain while turning and improving the soil around their towns. Remove the rodents, the ecosystem collapses.
"Fartblossom," or "FB" for short, would be an acceptable substitutes.
