New Iraq rape torture photos (warning: disturbing and graphic)
These were released yesterday, and are being distributed by Reuters. I found these on Factiva this morning; I doubt they'll be picked up by a wire service.

Captions are by Reuters:

"An undated handout photograph, issued on January 18, 2005, that is to be used as evidence in a court martial in Osnabrueck, Germany, purports to show Iraqi detainees who had been forced by British soldiers to 'simulate' sexual acts."

"An undated handout photograph, issued on January 18, 2005, that is to be used as evidence in a court martial in Osnabrueck, Germany purports to show Iraqi detainees during simulated oral sex."

Note that in the caption to the first image of prisoner abuse, Reuters places quotation marks around "simulate." Why not in the second?

2. If they tolerate pic #2 in American prisons, why be shocked here?
Or is it true that all the talk of homosexuality in prisons is just that - talk?

It's wrong, regardless. Sick, yes. But the impact, for many theoretically, would be deadened by the rumors of American prisons where new prisoner Joe become's Biff's new "special friend".

4. Their culture is much, much different than ours
Talk of prison sex is just fodder for jokes here, as are most sexual situations, but the Iraqi concepts of nudity, sexuality, rape and homosexuality are vastly different than ours. This is a culture that forbids pornography and strongly promotes modesty in all things dealing with the body and intimacy. Just being seen naked by a female soldier would be considered an outrage.

An Iraqi American described these pictures and those who faced that situation as having suffered a grievous blow to their concept of masculinity, as well as an insult to their god and country.

3. The top one was shown on BBC World News last night
They showed the other 3 pictures of the British Solders who were abusing suspected looters. I didn't see the bottom picture (simulated oral sex), but the top one (simulated anal sex) was shown along with the others of the looters. I was quite surprised because I had seen the previous 3 pictures of the British Solders & looters on DU yesterday, but not the oral sex one.

But remember! They hate us for our FREEDOMS.....not for things like this.....they understand this is all frat pranks. Like cheerleading.
