what does the term "underground" mean to you ??
you are here in the "Democratic Underground" and I've often wondered how those who post here relate to the term "underground".

PLEASE: do not use this as an opportunity to bash those you disagree with ... this is not intended to start a flame war against those who "bash dems", or hate "centrists" or don't like Kerry or Dean or anybody else, or those who are leaving the Party or are "republican lite" ... keep it positive, please ... just explain your own views instead of criticising others ... thanks ...

it's really a question seeking a little introspection ... do you see yourself as part of an "underground" and what exactly does the term mean to you ???

1. Used in the way we use it here,
it means "alternative" to me.

It used to mean secretive, but we are not a secret.

I think the underground newspapers of the sixties were much the same. They were called counterculture, but they an alternative.

2. In my opinion....
alternative or not the norm.

When I was a very little girl we lived in a house in Salem, Ohio (on Liberty Street no less) that had been the ultimate destination for the "Underground Railroad" during the Civil War.

3.  The beginning of life IMO. Life
begins with the planting of a seed, and you usually plant those seeds underground then those seeds grow, and become beautiful and powerful.
Thats my take on it. lol

5. Underground to me means...
that there is a false sense of security (this proverbial ground) in America today. People who work their 9-5 jobs go about their day not caring what is happening around them... as long as they get paid every Friday. We are underneath this ground, discussin the important issues and bringing to light the problems of our society in order to make sure those "Nine-to-fivers" (and many working longer hours) are able to feed their families. Also, underground means to me a place where I can go and meet other concerned citizens and learn about the society I live in - not just the areas where I live. As a concerned college student struggling to get through my studies and do something meaningful in our society, I am glad I have a place to go, "under"neath the "ground"ed ideologies that have handcuffed our society to right-wing lunacy.

That's the best way I can describe what underground means to me.... Thanks DU =)

8. the people not in power
The ideas here could be called alternative, popular, unpopular according to who reads it and interpretation of it. It also means the start of something that may not yet to visable to everyone to see but "it's growing by the day". It could be as small as an idea or as large as a political movement or direction. Whatever it means it's a vital part of "our" survival during the dark days ahead.

10. Underground to me
is the early stages of an awareness of something not accepted or understood by the majority. That awareness can progress in a number of ways on a number of levels and is different I am sure for virtually everyone here.

Long live the resistance!

Toss that tea overboard, we don't fu**ing want it!!
