Email reply from Senator Levin about Gonzales |
|
Dear XXX:
Thank you for contacting me regarding President Bush’s nomination of White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to be the new attorney general. I appreciate hearing your views on this matter.
The Constitution gives the President the authority to appoint individuals to run the various executive agencies. It also imposes the duty on the United States Senate to give its advice and consent to these nominations.
Concerns have been raised about statements made and actions taken by Mr. Gonzales while he served on the Texas Supreme Court, as General Counsel to then Governor Bush, and in his current position as White House counsel to President Bush. I will thoroughly examine the record regarding Mr. Gonzales’s service and statements and will closely follow testimony during confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee. You can be assured that I will carefully consider that record in assessing his qualifications to be our nation’s highest law enforcement official.
Thank you again for contacting me. I will be sure to keep your views in mind when Mr. Gonzales’s nomination comes before the Senate.
Sincerely, Carl Levin
