Am I the only person who sees this as sociopathic narcicism?
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050118/ap_on_fe_st/romania_oldest_mother_10

A 66-year-old professor who writes children's books claims to have become the world's oldest woman to give birth, and doctors said Monday she and her day-old baby daughter were in good condition in intensive care.

Doctors at the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest said Adriana Iliescu became pregnant through in vitro fertilization using sperm and egg from anonymous donors. They said she delivered her first child, Eliza Maria, by Caesarean section on Sunday and that a twin sister was stillborn.

Marinescu has declined to comment on ethical questions regarding the pregnancy, but said he was impressed by Iliescu's faith in God and her determination to have a child.

If you want a child so bad, why not ADOPT? It's not like Romania has a shortage of orphans, for Christ sake. There seem to be a class of women out there that think that unless a child comes from their vagina, it is unworthy of their attention.

And if this woman truly had faith in God, doesn't she think she would have managed pregnancy without involving doctors? I understand that He has, in the past, done this kind of thing without doctors, men, or sperm.

Personally, I think T'Pau should go back to officiating at Vulcan mating rituals, and leave making babies to younger women.

1. Selfish, sure...but that's a bit harsh...
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 06:20 PM by tjdee
Would they allow a single older woman to adopt?

Perhaps the natural way was easier.

Anyway, she's a professor, so she can provide financial support. That's no more selfish than poor women who have their 3rd or 4th child.

If I think about it, having children to begin with smacks of selfishness (until they're born, anyway). And I have one.

5. Well, yes....I agree on most of that. But the odds of this woman living..
...long enough to see her daughter reach adulthood have decreased dramatically by having a baby at such an advanced age.

10. Indeed, I feel the same.
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 06:27 PM by tjdee
And I would have been harsher on her myself except I remembered I'm a single parent, and I'm sure some would say it was selfish of me not to have an abortion, as my kid doesn't have access to two parents and is probably going to not have as much because we don't have two incomes.

Something like half of single parent households live in poverty.

So...

6. In private adoptions, if you have money, anything is possible.
I wonder about the long-term health of the baby.

14. Romania is not as draconian
about adopting as the US is. If she wanted to adopt, it would be simple, safer and cheaper.

15. Well, true...
I forgot that.

But I think T'Pau wasn't 66. Also, I think that's 66 Vulcan years, or 165 for us. <s>

4. wait until she is 70 and she is chasing a three year old around
the house....that's after rubbing Ben-Gay all over her limbs to keep her agile enough to do so...

I was 26 and 29 when mine were born and they gave me a workout.....at 66 perhaps I will be a grandmother...bake cookies, provide candy and send my grandchildren home so my kids can chase them around til the candy high ends...

8. Thoughtless act
**oh by the way, great comparison (pics)**

My first thought was, how thoughtless this woman is for bringing a child into her life at such an advanced age. Odds are, she could be dead before the child graduates high school. It just should not have happened.

But then, that annoying little bleeding heart liberal voice in my head said "who are you to say who can give birth and who cannot". "why should this woman be denied the gift of motherhood simply due to her age or inability to become pregnant naturally" ugghh.

Still, I think she is selfish, and the child will be the one that will pay the price in the event she does not live long enough to raise her.

in the end I think that she and her family will have to live with the decision. I am sure that she has to have someone around that is helping her out.

18. If she wants to be a mother
she can become one by adopting. I do not wish to "deny" anyone the right to be a mother, I just do not understand why she had to make another life, at great risk and expense, when her country is full of children, including infants in DIRE need of mothers.

Hell, my cat has looked after other cat's orphaned kittens and even a baby squirell.

16. I'm not saying take away the choice
I am looking at the motivations behind such an act. It is unfair to the child who will probably lose her mother before attainning her majority. It is a waste of medical resources. It shows contempt for children in desparate straights who are here NOW and need a mother.

I don't see any need for laws against this, but I think it is a very selfish thing to do.

22. It might be selfish,
but people have children for all sorts of stupid or selfish reasons... to try to "keep" a boyfriend, to "save" a failing marriage, or because "God says".

A waste of medical resources, yes, but so is forcing terminally ill people against their wills to live beyond their natural 'time' by the use of medical support. For the most part, breast implants and face-lifts are a waste of medical resources, too.

As for her age, Saul Bellow fathered a child at age 84. Tony Randall became a father for the first time at age 77.

(as an aside, when I first saw the thread title "sociopathic narcissism", I assumed it was a Bush thread!)

20. no you're not alone in your disgust
If Amazona ran the world, it would be illegal for anyone, male or female, to spawn after a certain age. We need to put limits on this nonsense. 6 Billion people is enough. I'm tired of feeling crowded in here.

Since there are no such laws, I think the least we can do is put the social pressure of disgust on people who insist on making babies they don't have the youth to raise. We already put the social pressure of disgust on women who make babies too early. We should do the same for old women who spawn merely as a denial that their youth has gone...and in this woman's case her middle age has gone as well. Yuck!

It is creepy behavior when old men do it, and it isn't any more attractive in an old woman.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.

21. I think it's a pretty awful thing to do...if she's still alive, she will
be around 80 when the kid reaches puberty. And I have big problems with women who have litters of 5,6,7 kids (not to mention all the gushing media converage of those events.) My brother's wife had triplets (after having had 1 several earlier) and he's told me many times he regrets letting her take fertility drugs. I mean he loves his kids and all, but raising them has made him an old man at 55...and they have just started college, he will still be working 75 hours a week for at least 4 more years just to keep up.
