Which Persecuted Group to you belong to?
Persecuted liberal? Persecuted atheist? Persecuted southerner? Persecuted fat guy? Persecuted Hippy? Persecuted supermodel? Persecuted Christian? (enter denomination here) Persecuted Native American? Persecuted Black American? Persecuted radical leftist? Persecuted conspiracy theorist? Persecuted Democratic Undergrounder?

Some people really are persecuted, some just imagine that they are.

Or are you the rare creature that doesn't feel persecuted in anyway, by anybody?

73. Ha!
And I'm only one of many, I can assure you. It's a bit difficult to look at the way some of us are treated by our government and still try to keep the will to live. The only good thing I can say about poverty is that I have health coverage right now. If it weren't for that, I'd likely already be dead. But we're stuck for another 4 years. I wonder how many of us can live through another 4 years of the destitution of America?

3. I think a lot of people hate
different groups. It is up to a member of that group to decide whether or not to feel persecuted. It's all in attitude. For example, I'm Muslim. I'm a peace activist. I can feel persecuted by people who spit on me and push me, or I can feel sorry for them and their delusions (which is not an easy thing to do, btw). The choice is mine.

i am a woman..and i am old...old women are not all that respected in our society..most societies..i do cringe when i hear someone refer to a young mans behavior...as "he acts like an old woman" ha! The nice thing about being an old woman though is that..is that we really dont give a flying fuck what people think! That is nice!

but I am 51. When I turned 50 I decided that I had made it to that nice age when I didn't have to give a flying fuck what anyone thought(great choice of words mexicoxpat). It has been very amusing and very liberating and I feel more like a free human than ever before in my life. I am loving it. I see persecution and will always fight against it but refuse to feel persecuted, it is hard to feel that way when you don't care what they think.

66. Old Drivers
You can tell old people don't give a fuck because of the way they drive. They just barrel on into the parking lot at the mall without looking, they back out of spaces without checking who's behind them, they change lanes without a glance. They just don't care.

I'm a 38 year old woman now and when I'm 50, I hope I look good enough to turn the occasional head. Maybe even seduce my son's friend. HA! Is that perverted? :)

57. Persecuted? Yes. Do I care? Not anymore.
...as long as I'm not getting my ass kicked, anyway. I am proud of who I am as everybody in here should. If my differences draw attention, it makes me feel good because I am truly unique. I stand for something that bigots hate, and I couldn't be happier.

(I say this having been through discrimination and harassment myself, and do not mean to imply that anybody else should feel happy because they are persecuted, lol. It's simply my personal feelings about me.)

7. If having people yell obscenities at you for holding an anti-war sign
is persecution, I guess I am.

By far, most war supporters express their opinions with their middle fingers, by being very ugly, and yelling insults and obscentities.

But maybe that isn't persecution since those doing so are only a fraction of those expressing support for our weekly sign gatherings in central Kansas City.

Isn't that nice? The whole fam damily drove by our protest in West Allis in September and offered the one-finger salute as they left Shrubie's speech. Little kids!

You know what's even better? When the guy cruises by in his Lincoln and does the sneaky middle finger scratching his nose bit. That's mature, eh?

Outside of protesting...yeah, being female and non-Christian. Does it everytime.

"If having people yell obscenities at you for holding an anti-war sign..."

That is freedom. You are expressing your opinion, they are expressing theirs. They are being thugs and making lame attempts at intimidating you. You are expressing your opinion with conviction, bravery and dignity, and making a positive impression on more people than your detractors.

sure, you may laugh, but when you get into a political discussion and even democrats discount your opinion because you can't vote:

OR

When you canvas for a candidate and the people you meet chastize you and tell you that the US should attack Canada because "They harbor terrorists and then give them health care."

OR

When someone makes a tasteless joke about your country straight to your face and expects you to laugh, you know, you feel a little persecuted.

The only class left in the country where its ok for someone to threaten you or even hit you with a deadly weapon and they have a get out of jail free card that says I didn't see the bicycle (oh - pedestrians are this class too) .

700 cyclists and 2000-3000 pedestrians killed every year by car but we spend $40 billion a year -and that's just the federal component - so more cars can go faster and pennies for bicyclists or pedestrians.

The lady claimed she never saw me when I made eye contact with her before crossing the street. I got a ticket in the mail later for failure to yeild.

41. Not persecuted, unless you count the general one of having our Free Nation
stolen by Totalitarian Thugs, with all that includes: untrustworthy voting, atrophied system of checks and balances, legalized theft for Bushevik Leaders and Cronies, etc.

But, no, that does not equate to direct persecution.

I for one am quite glad that, at least in the early stages of our transformation into Bushevik Orwellian Totalitarian Tyranny (whew! that's a mouthful) that we are not emulating Soviets, Nazis, Romans, or any other of the myriad forms of Totalitarianism people have faced, YET, at least with regards to persecution/violence.

Of course, I am a white guy, albeit a Jew, and so if the true hardcore persecutions begin (and I think once we as a nation put our feet on the road to Totalitarianism, no matter how much Kinder and Gentler than the previous incarnations, must eventually find it's way there), I very likely won't see it in the beginning.

And it sure as shit won't be on Corporate TV Pravda Infoganda.

"First, they came for the Communists. But I wasn't a Communist, so I ddn't speak out..."
--Rev. Martin Neimoller

But no, in the end...currently not persecuted.

Which is all too common these days.

I am hopelessly majority in every way, except that I am a Democrat (yes, yes election fraud, etc) Honestly, though, so far I haven't been persecuted (I did enjoy the stunned look on this one Republican's face when I told him that A. We should get out of Iraq right now and B. getting rid of Saddam did not make the world a safer place. I think he was shocked that someone dared to say something that went against what in his mind is the conventional wisdom. This same guy tried to tell me that Clinton should have resigned because adultery is against the ten commandments)

62. Gun-owning bleeding-heart liberal
You don't know tension until you pull into the parking lot of a shooting range before hunting season with Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers on your car, and you can feel the other shooters there staring at you. The fun part is seeing their reaction when you pull out an AR15 assault-style rifle complete with 30-rd magazine from your gun case! You can almost see the moment their brains explode as they try to make sense of what they just saw.

64. I don't really consider myself persecuted
Considering that I am a white, (somewhat) Christian, heterosexual male in his 20's.

However, sometimes I think the day may come when I may be persecuted for my liberal ideals. I suppose you could say it has happened already (Kerry sticker scratched, car keyed several times, grille broken, not to mention being shouted down by loudmouthed jackasses) but I don't really consider people that do that shit to be persecuting me. I just write them off as idiotic, sycophantic, dittohead freeper losers.

69. I do not feel persecuted, I do through my heart out to those who
When I feel someone has done me wrong, I do ask WHY? but I usually come to the conclusion that I have done something to them or they are simply a poor misguided soul.
I do feel lucky in this world and a responsibility that I do not ever make another person feel persecuted (except my children and that is impossible with teenagers).
I do try to teach my children the same way, never persecute any one.

75. I don't feel persecuted, despite being an atheist.
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 09:06 AM by Taxloss
There are morons who think I'm evil, but no complex has resulted. We in the UK are mercifully largely free of the religious bigotry infesting the US. You sometimes have to be careful about what you say, but the UK's 14% atheist and London is 16%, more than all the non-Christian religions put together, so we're too prominent to be ignored.

But there are occasional instance of bigotry. The last one that really got me riled was a letter in the Guardian (of all places) on December 24, which said "How will the athesists be justifying tomorrow's indulgence to their children?"

I replied: "We don't have to. That's your job."

ON EDIT: I do occaionally think people treat me unfairly because of my profession, journalism. You get people getting all arsey sometimes. Not really persecution.

79. Atheists/agnostic..
But I don't really feel persecuted. Probably because I move in the very liberal, very open-minded academic environment.

If I moved to some other place I would probably be getting death threats.. :-)

Oh! and I'm legal alien.. But people don't realize that until I open my mouth..

81. non-custodial parent
my husband is a non-custodial parent, and his wife has relentlessly persecuted him since their divorce. She constantly tells their kids horrible things about him. They are not even allowed to call him "dad" when they are at home. They must call him by his first name, and his ex refers to him as "the devil". What can anyone do about it? Nothing, unless we go back to court and spend thousands of dollars so the judge will ask her nicely to stop.

It is called parental alienation syndrome. (www.helpstoppas.com)

non custodial parents are definately a persecuted group.
