The big picture: Dem Strategy vs. Repub Strategy 2004
While Democrats are busy measuring public opinion and reacting to it, the Republicans are busy creating it.

The entire Republican platform is based upon a false reality: that we are winning in Iraq, that there were dire reasons to start the war in Iraq, that marriage is under attack, that Social Security is doomed, that Democrats are weak on terror, etc... The problem is that a significant portion of the public believes these things. This is the effect of the Republican propaganda empire. Their objective is to create a new reality to help people justify the Republican point of view. No one in their right minds would support Republican policy unless they were part of the top 5% of income earners in this country. This fabricated Republican reality bridges the gap between poor rural voters and the rich plutocrats that they worship and vote for. The advantage is naturally on the Democrats' side, since there are far more poor people than rich people in this country. A skewed reality is the only thing that can counter that.

The creation of Republican reality stems from wide talk radio networks that reach millions of people, cable TV, networks of preachers, and conservative websites. All arms of this propaganda machine are synchronized with a carefully crafted message that aims to delude the poor into supporting someone that hurts them. Poor rural voters send their kids to war more often than urban Democrats. They will be negatively effected by social security reform. They are hurt by the enormous debt that Bush has rung up. But the Republicans, through their preacher friends and talk radio, are busy sculpting a reality that blinds these people from independent thought.

Democrats, you would think, would be doing the same thing...making some sort of organized attack on Republican ideas that cuts through the bullshit these people are fed. We don't even need to lie to these people. Democrats would be better for them. All we need to do is tell the truth. Yet we are not. These people were forgotten about. They should be part of the Democratic base. Instead, we are listening to political consultants and making mild mannered statements carefully crafted not to piss people off. In this sense, we are reading the public's opinion and reacting to it instead of trying to proactively change it. We need to create crises in which people will have to turn to Democrats for protection. We need to grab control of more propaganda avenues, and when the PATRIOT ACT allows the arrest of an innocent citizen, we need to yell and scream to gun loving Libertarians that Bush is taking civil liberties away. We need to send out mailings to all registered independents that look like electric bills saying "You owe this much in government debt as a taxpayer" and send along a bill for $25,000. Say it is because of Bush's rabid spending habits. It's not even a lie!!

Right now the reality that Bush is protecting the poor still prevails in rural America. And there are rural parts of EVERY state, not just the red states. Democrats have to work to create their own version of reality that competes with and attacks Republican views, and creates a situation where Republicans are responsible for their actions. Only then will Democrats be able to win back a majority in our government.

1. Good points...
...and I really like the mailer with the "bill" for the debt idea as a tactic. We need to make it concrete.

2. We could also be mailing out fliers with pictures of all the dead soldiers
and then have "before" and "after" statements of what Bush said about WMD's.

5. Well said! :-) Fight GOP's "choose between victory and vacillation"
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 08:53 AM by papau
:-)

The Mehlman's remarks released by the RNC were more than fighting terrorism, revamping Social Security, changing the tax code and appointing "strict constructionists to the courts,", institutionalizing the GOP's 2004 grass-roots operation, courting new voters (Blacks through school voucher initiatives, young voters through Social Security changes and Hispanics through efforts to limit legal liability), registering to vote men and women who attend church every week but aren't yet registered voters, and talk about banning gay marriage.

The Key phrase - actually in text but not delivered, was the sales pitch that Dems equal "vacillation" while the GOP = Victory.

:-)

6. Fantastic Post!!!!!
You make a great observation in that the problem lies in the willingness of the people to believe the propeganda machine of the right. When you look at it in that light, it makes more sense than ever for us to fight fire with fire!

And I'm also sick of us worrying about pissing people off. They've already pissed me off so often that I've lost count; and so what if we piss them off, we wouldn't get their vote anyway.

11. Good points
I have thought about this for some time now and these are very good points. The Republicans do four things very well. They simplify any issue to short phrases, ie, no new taxes--it’s your money--dead or alive. They use language to their advantage by creating catchy names for issues, ie, death tax--partial birth abortion. They always offer something for nothing to their constituency--tax cuts--private accounts. They stay on message even when it’s shown to be an unpopular message. Better strong and wrong than weak and right.

We have allowed them to define us and the issues. Liberal has become such a pejorative that we are forced to call ourselves “progressives.”

They do one other thing really well. They have a very extensive email network which they use to spread misinformation. Near the end of the campaign I was receiving one email a day from a right wing friend with some new disinformation about Kerry.

I have begun a short address list to answer the onslaught of fiction and suggest we all do the same.

12. I have done the very same.
My e-mail list involves about 25 of my friends who all hate Bush, but are otherwise politically misinformed. They all want to hear the truth, and everyone so far seems to enjoy getting my newsletters.

I figure if I inform them, then they will inform their friends, and I will get somewhat of a chain reaction. If the media won't do it, we will have to tell people the truth manually.

13. I'm also adding the
addresses of the right wingers who send me stuff. Many of them get all huffy and request removal, but the more moderate ones hang in.

When I get a RW post, I rebut it with Reply to All. One thing I'm particularly proud of is never responding in kind and supporting everything with MSM backup.

The other thing we need to be doing is LTTE. I get one published about every 5 months and it's hard to keep the enthusiasm but worth it.

Perhaps we can combine lists? BTW, I always use either BCC or a commercial mass emailer to hide the list from public view.

14. Damn straight
Take a look at the electoral map of 1896 sometime - it's almost the exact opposite of 2004. We used to own these people, now they hate us. Instead of whining about how stupid they are, and how we should boycott everything they make, we need to get out there and evangelize, so to speak.

15. Exactly. Brilliantly stated.
I love the post about people making lists of friends and sending them rebuttals and stuff. This is what will turn the tide in our favor.

One on one is the way we can fix the democratic party and turn the tide against the republicans.

We can do it and we are doing it. It wasn't enough to win this time around but the momentum is there!

If every liberal activist made it their goal to radicalize 5 people they know by 2006 we would have accomplished something quite profound.

We should create a web site and tools to trains and assist liberal activists recruitment efforts.

18. You have captured exactly what is wrong with the Democratic Party
I would like to add that another problem with the Democrats is that they think the key to winning is finding that magical spot on the right-left spectrum that will appeal to the greatest number of voters. In other words, they think it is all about positioning and pandering. They have completely forgotten that it is at least as important to INSPIRE and LEAD. They need to quit pandering and start speaking from the heart, to start inspiring people through the strength of their convictions. In the last ten years or so, they've forgotten how to do that.
