132. An interesting caption
My editing instructor at journalism school would have kicked my ass if I wrote a caption which identified Bush and Pickles by their positions in the photo. A better caption would have been "President (sic) and Mrs. Bush appear with daughters Jenna (left) and Barbara at the ... "

Maybe the caption writer was making the point that Bush is such a wuss he can't be picked out in a group of women.

I attended a very fancy wedding in late October. I am a woman a couple years younger then Pickles. My dress...which covered me and certainly cost a shitload less than the abortion we are talking about on this thread -- was so damn much prettier.

And it was far more complimentary to my looks. That damn dress she is wearing looks like an elongated shirt with a bustle.

down the front. Also, if you look closely at her right hand side, below the waist, there is some kind of "split" in the organdy fabric.

Or something. I really can't figure out WHY.

Edited because I originally typed "waste" instead of "waist". I wonder why.

Had to look twice, it was that convincing.

Holy cow. She really does wear drapes.

All this time, and I thought it was a joke. I honestly didn't think it was quite that bad. But that really could be drapery material.

I'm a man and I could dress a woman better than that! But then, I'm gay, maybe that has something to do with it, I dunno.....

Drapes. Our First Mannequin Lady wears drapes.

on edit: while we're talking about clothing, look at *'s right leg.

Shoot their tailor and their costume designer fashion consultants, if any.

Horizontal pleats?! Why not just tack a "Wide Load" sign onto your ass? Your right tit is also about two inches from another opportunity for daddy to feel you up in public.

Babs, Granma Welch's peignoir is not a funky party frock.

Laura's dress looks fresh from the June Cleaver Couture for Housefraus Line.

57. One of the big things about her clothes is
the drape (pun intended) of the fabric. The fabric used for her clothing is always so stiff (and probably heavy) that it ends up looking like... well... drapes.

A button down dress? Goodness.

The color fade at the bottom? So 1980s.

Her clothes also strike me as simple- too simple. Not simple in a good way. Typically they look like a badly sewn Butterick pattern. Like someone didn't go the extra mile and do edge stitching. It gives the effect of a homemade dress. Combined with the horrible fabric, the overall effect is just wrong.

Actually, I kinda like the concept of Laura's dress. It's got a retroish Joan Crawford power trip look to it, and could look good on a mature woman with a mature woman's figure, such as her mother-in-law. Or me (although I don't particularly care for that color, though).

"Typically they look like a badly sewn Butterick pattern."
I'd say Simplicity - Butterick's only a step down from Vogue. Laura's clothes all have that "loving hands at home" aspect. And they fit badly - look at the wrinkles in the close-up. As someone who's done a lot of sewing and even some tailoring, I know it's possible to make a simple pattern look absolutely stunning, IF one cares to. The right fabric (or maybe they're all made out of kevlar??, the right underpinnings and multiple fittings and adjustments are what it takes. BTW, well over a hundred years ago the great Parisian houses started making body forms for each of their clients so they could check the fit as they went - or maybe that notion is just too French.

Or maybe her designers just hate her. I've long suspected that photographers all hate her husband - how else do you explain all those unflattering shots?

60. The fabric is horrible. As others have said, it resembles drapes.
Secondly, it's a shirtwaist! That's far too casual/officey/dowdy to be the bodice of a ball gown, and it doesn't fit with the rest of the dress. The skirt is too poofy/overdone, and it does make it look like she's got a bustle. The color is ghastly. The shimmer makes that worse.

To add insult to injury, the elbow-length sleeves are not flattering, and the upturned collar looks silly.

91. Here we go
David, nice to meet you, welcome to tonight's episode of "Who The Hell Thought This Was A Good Idea?"

If there was an occasion that one should have a gown beyond reproach, it's an Inaugural Ball. This is not the Oscars, and it's definitely not the time for a Fashion Statement. The shmatta Pickles is wearing this evening is not anywhere near appropriate. Here's the first problem: An evening gown does not button up from floor to breasts, it does not have button-up three quarter sleeves, and it is not puce. An evening gown designed by anyone who knew what he or she was doing should reflect the importance of the occasion (many, if not most of the women would wear black,) and enhance the beauty and figure of the wearer.

If I were designing Pickles' gown (God forbid,) I would have gone with a very simple silhouette. I would have first made sure she had the appropriate undergarments for the simple silhouette, and I would have made the gown in burgundy; I think darker jewel tones would look much nicer on her than the gown tonight (or tomorrow night's ice blue -- what were they thinking?) I agree with the poster that said the designers working with all three of them hated them. I'd like to know how any designer could make a 21-year-old female with a figure look so dreadful.

In the meantime, I would have called Carson Kressley. I'll bet he's utterly disgusted right about now.

Julie

116. Once again, in my not-so-humble opinion, it's a beautiful dress
a wonderful color--see how it brings out the slightly reddish tint of her hair--and entirely appropriate for a woman of her age. Picture a taller, slimmer, chic-er woman in that gown--Katherine Hepburn, say--then get back to me.

BTW, I'd be curious to know exactly how YOU ever-so-talented designers would dress a woman of her age and weight?

The twins, now--truly hideous. Ghastly.

I'm a fortysomething fat chick. If I was ever called on to dress for such an important occasion, I would look for a black dress with either a scooped neckline (think Meryl Streep's dress at Sunday night's Golden Globes,) or a bateau neckline, floor-length straight cut gown with long sleeves, and the best rope of pearls we could afford. I would avoid taffeta or other shiny fabric at all cost; it makes anyone but the super-skinny look huge due to reflection of light. If Pickles wanted to wear an elegant fabric, I'm not sure why they didn't dress her in raw silk. It would have been a nicer look.

Laura Bush's designer hates her. To dress her in a shirtwaist for such a formal occasion is not correct. As I previously said, I would dress her in a very simple gown in jewel tones (burgundy, cobalt, or emerald.) It would bring out her eyes and show off what she's got. She also would look tasteful and elegant.

147. Thank you for giving a serious answer to my question.
You make some very good points, but I'm bound to say that I disagree with some of your ideas:

A bateau neckline would emphasize her width; a v-neck would be better.

Didn't see Meryl Streep Sunday night; don't watch those things, but I'm sure she looked just peachy.

As for the "shirtwaist for such a formal occasion" being incorrect, piss on "correct." Piss on convention. That's for Republicans.

So a short, dumpy woman chose a gown designed for Katherine Hepburn. Good for her. I'm especially impressed by her lack of jewels, and frankly delighted by her audacity. (I'm also convinced that if Hillary had worn this gown y'all would be slavering.)

And I--all 5'4" 130 lbs. of me, with mounds of dark red hair at age 61, would have chosen this gown in a hot minute.

So sue me.

139. Perhaps they could have softened the look of the shiny
fabric with a soft lace overlay. It's "too much" in terms of shine.

The details aren't the least bit interesting in her gown, either.

My last evening gown was a flesh taffeta strapless, with overlay of black lace. Every sic inches, a small line of flat black sequins runs through. Totally elegant, feminine. It made me look better.

This dress doesn't make her any prettier, so it fails. I think she always thinks her waistline and hips are smaller than they are. Yes, the fabric is too stiff.

175. That dress is WAY too much material!!
It looks like Florence Henderson gone awry. I think I resent the idea that a woman in her 50's? can't dress more attractively than that. Her weight? She's hardly obese. I would have put her in a Column style dress of a great drapey fabric, in a burgundy that trended toward the rust side, to bring out her highlights. A gorgeous necklace, not gaudy but with some sparkle would show off her cleavage. THAT is how I'd dress her. That housedress in Impala paint taffeta is just too freakin' matronly. She's not 70!

THe girls? I like Jenna's dress, though it's far too low cut for the style.. it looks like she's trying to show her boobs too much. barbara? Damn.. that looks like a recycled bridesmaid dress. Jenna has the best dress there.

195. NO woman of her age & heft should wear SHANTUNG SILK.
It's shiny and stiff, which adds weight to all but he most slender of people, and as with makeup, one should NOT do SHINY after the age of 21.

The color is not complimentary for Laura. It makes her look ruddy.

A pure jewel tone in a soft flowing drape would have been ideal for her.

I also like fabrics that show wrinkles really well.

The picture with Jenna throwing up the horns shows how badly she needs a new bra or two. Love that "here are my boobs on a shelf" effect. At least they're not near her waist the way they are most of the time. You'd think by now she'd realize she's got big ones and buy the right underwear.

The other actress that is (for the most part,) exquisitely dressed at formal events is Jamie Lee Curtis. Before the strapless number she wore at the last event I saw her at, she typically goes for elegant and glamorous instead of trashy. I wondered to myself if it was because she has to attend the opening of Parliament every year (her husband's a Lord,) and learned that a little cleavage goes a long way.

* and his family couldn't afford a good stylist?

on the White house grounds. I know I shouldn't be stereotypical like this but Just look at them. They don't even clean up well.

211. I keep thinking that if the colors were reversed on Jenna's
dress, it would look better on her. The black would be minimizing her waist and hips. I'm also thinking it might have looked better on Barbara, and barbara's dress might look better on Jenna.

218. These Drapery Judging threads are the best
I just wanted to add my 2 cents. My first thought was of Mrs Engles of Little House On The Prairie. The dress is from the 1800's and could be used in this case to slop the hogs on the pigfarm in Crawford.

222. Oh my God.
The girls' dresses are just about as bad as pickles.

The best looking dress is the pale green one and I can't even say anything good about that, because it is ill-fitting and makes her look totally washed out. The color's not good for her.

And that's the BEST one.

What the hell was pickles thinking with that mess?

And the dirty blonde? WHAT is that? Please don't tell me that's the really expensive dress they had designed for her? Is that it? Because it's HORRID.

Aren't we supposed to be the one's that have more class?
Sure wouldn't know if from this thread.

While I don't particularly love what the twins are wearing, I happen to think Laura's dress is quite nice and appropriate. And no, she doesn't have a bustle on. This is, if I am correct, designed by Carolina Herrera.

Pickles' dress designers routinely require wall-to-wall counseling. This one requires summary execution.

233. Why, oh why, does Laura let Moms Bush pick out her clothes?
...iridescent...puce...striped...shirtwaist...there is so much wrong with that that I cannot even begin to express my horror.

and the girls' dresses look like off-the-rack clearance items from Mariposa's prom sale. They don't fit right, the fabrics look cheap, and they're about as unflattering as they could possibly be. But they don't even begin to compare to the Horror of the Misused Window Treatments.

246. I'll tell you the one problem with all three.
They don't coordinate.

Besides the fact that none of them have a flattering fit, the colors fight with each other. They look bad together.

On every TV show the characters' wardrobes are coordinated so nobody clashes. You'd think someone could have advised these characters so they'd look united in their big scene.

Their clothes say, I'm not with her. She's not with me. I'm not with them.

It's quite a statement.

and horrendous style.

The dress is also striped.

She looks just awful and is smiling as if she were dressed impeccably in the latest fashion.

And what is wrong with her boobs? Good heavens--they are bullets.

That dress has got to be the worst ever worn by her. She looks unkempt.

It is simply horrific.
