I'm worried about the poor quality of education for the wealthy
snip>
Mrs. Bush's twin daughters are fashion forward, and she has approved their inaugural dresses, perhaps mindful of Chelsea Clinton's unveiling midparade on Pennsylvania Avenue of a miniskirt eight years ago, a moment that Mrs. Bush called a "wardrobe malfunction."

And she confessed that on the last day of the fall campaign her daughter Jenna announced that she and her sister, Barbara, would be joining their parents in an Iowa town, Sioux City, which Jenna pronounced "Sigh-yocks City."

"Don't put that in!" Mrs. Bush said quickly, as her listeners exploded in laughter. "It was so funny. She was totally humiliated."

Skipping right over the superfluous shot at the highly educated and sober Chelsea Clinton, didn't these people ever discuss American Indians in their home? This is the one who wants to teach!

Maybe I'm a complete snob, but I checked and my 15 yr old knew the word. Is it common for college grads to have blind spots like this?

1. Legacy students
will get a C in their courses if they don't bother to show up at all. That's how the game is played, and it's how those posh Ivy League schools can afford the ivy, the rare books libraries, the fine art, and the cachet, not to mention enough poor students with brains to keep up their standards. My guess is that little was expected of Babs Jr at Yale, and little was delivered. Her function will be to marry well according to the standards of the Texas mafia and to breed. Brains and class are not requirements. Fertility is.

I feel rather sorry for those two, since they seem to have accepted the rather low horizon and limited role they'll end up playing. They may have been capable of more, had they been encouraged to seek it.

3. Jenna wasn't a legacy at UT.
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 12:19 AM by Ilsa
Not that I know of. Her mom graduated from SMU, her father went to Yale and Harvard.

My understanding is that UT has pretty strict standards. Maybe they floated her through, but she wouldn't have been a legacy there like Barbara was at Yale. Frankly, I wonder how Jenna could have gotten through UT without help if she was calling Sioux City "Sigh-ocks" four years ago.

7. Ilsa, I don't think it was four years ago
It was this last fall when they were reported to have asked to join in the campaigning. She'd already graduated.

9. Bad sentence structure on my part:
I think she mispronounced Sioux City four+ years ago (almost five now) during the first campaign. She just graduated from UT Spring of 2004. You're saying she mispronounced SC this last fall? Geez, what an idiot.

2. They're part of America's most well-connected family.
They don't need to learn anything to do well in life.

8. The First Sluts are like
Paris and Nicki Hilton, but without the looks or brains. Little rich kids with no need for goals in life.
