Clear Channel Rolls Out More Liberal Talk Radio
Owner/Invetor Drobney credits success of Air America as a by-product of radio's consolidation with the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which lifted ownership limits.

Clear Channel Communications Inc. on Wednesday said it converted three stations to a liberal talk format and this year could double to 44 the number of stations carrying such programming.

The nation's biggest radio operator said it switched underperforming stations in Washington, D.C., Detroit and Cincinnati carrying nostalgic or sports programming with talkers like Jerry Springer, Ed Schultz, Lionel, Phil Hendrie, Randi Rhodes and Al Franken.

"The election cycle last year gave rise to dissenting voices, which gave rise to a new format in talk radio. When the public says it wants more of this, we provide it," said Gabe Hobbs, vice president of programming for news/talk/sports for Clear Channel Radio.

Air America is now in 44 markets. Drobny describes its success as a by-product of radio's consolidation with the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which lifted ownership limits.

"At first the Telecom Act made it difficult to enter the market but now we're seeing the other side. They're (big radio companies) taking underperforming stations and giving them to us. We're saving a lot of dead stations," Drobny told Reuters.

1. There's gotta be a hitch - after all, it IS Clear Channel...
Possibly disclaimers broadcast during commercial breaks:

"This liberal program brought to you by 'Oscar Meyer Weiners." When you think 'liberal,' think 'Weiners!'"

4. I don't think they really thought about Ohio.
Again, it's about the money. They made a decision on their own time and are following through with it. Big picture, they certainly preferred a Bush win for FCC reasons, but on an individual station level, it is all ratings and advertising rates.

Progressive radio has to keep up its entertainment level and draw an audience. If it does, it will get widely heard. Then it will have an effect on peoples' thoughts and on future elections.

3. No hitch.
It's about the $$$ baby. That is their agenda. If it sells they will air it.

5. Like Clear Channel is EVER on the cutting edge.
Hell, they're just now figuring out that maybe they have too many commercials on their radio stations--something that anyone with functioning ears could have told 'em (had they existed) in 1972.

The good news? There MUST be a market for what CC terms Progressive Talk Radio or they wouldn't be pursuing it. At. All.

:argh:
