Why is there a Confederate flag in these "inauguration" photos?
Am I mistaken, or is that a Confederate flag on the left? Is displaying that in a national "celebration" considered appropriate? Seriously.

3. I believe it's a state flag
Probably some sovereign entity from below the Mason-Dixon line.

9. It *might * be the Mississippi state flag (note the white part)

the blue and red isn't showing perhaps...I DO see a white part

Whatever it is, it IS definitely the "stars and bars"

24. A minor point, but that's not the stars and bars
The S.&B. is the 'first national flag' of the confederacy (which is the basis for the new state flag of Georgia); the Southern Cross (a confusing name, as it's also used for the Australian flag) was the battle flag of the confederacy; even more confusingly the form usually used (the rectangular one) is the naval jack of the confederacy.

Sorry to be a vexilogical bore....

11. according to this web site:
Edited on Thu Jan-20-05 11:01 AM by SheepyMcSheepster
http://www.law.ou.edu/hist/flags/stflag.shtml

the only one with the southern cross on it is Mississippi's

edit: on further inspection it is mississipi's flag.

14. Guessing: Former US flags?
I'm not sure. Was that the flag of the Confederate States during the Civil War? Could they have all the flags which have previously represented the US for some reason?

If so, still doesn't explain why it is the only one of the flags in that group pulled out to get extra display room.

18. At first I was going to say that if it's Mississippi...
...is only their state flag there, but I guess a wider shot would show all 50 state flags? The white one on the right looks like it could be Illinois's.

By the way, nice flag there, Mississippi. :eyes:

22. During the Mississippi Governor's race
One of the TV ads for the GOP candidate said something like, "Some people* want us to change our state flag..." as part of the ad. I saw it and thought, "Well, he's just sewn up the redneck lunkhead vote."

*Not sure if he meant African-Americans, evil LIEberals, or--horrors!--some combination of the two. I can't remember the ad verbatim. I do remember seeing it and shaking my head in disbelief, though.
